True Blood Season 5 Finale Resolutions

Season 5 of True Blood comes to a close this Sunday with an episode appropriately called “Save Yourself.” Eric will embark on a final, desperate mission to overthrow the Authority. Hopefully this final mission will also save Bill from his Lilith blood-induced, nesting craziness. Andy will face the reprucussions of getting a little fairy tail while Luna and Sam try to save Emma as well as their own lives after being caught by the Authority. Although we’ve finally gotten closure with Lafayette’s inner demon and Terry’s smoke monster, as the previews suggest, there are still a number of questions without resolution.

WILL ERIC SUCCEED?

Eric has a lot of problems to resolve in the finale and unfortunately, he’s going to need much more than his wit and glamoring ability to prevail. Not only does he have to figure out how to take down the Authority, he must figure out how to release Bill from the grips of Lilith’s bath salt-like blood. Although it may be easy to physically remove Bill from the Authority, undoing the damage done to his nested brain will likely prove much more difficult. Unbeknownst to Eric, Pam is in the Authority’s cross hairs too. Based on the previews below, Eric wisely enlists the help of his family (Nora and Tara) along with the Stackhouse siblings. Although the group will surely be outnumbered by the Authority’s security force, it is much better then going it alone and Eric and Nora have the advantage of being much older than most of the vampires they’re up against in the finale.

WILL SAM, LUNA AND EMMA MAKE IT OUT ALIVE?

In the penultimate episode of the season, Sam and Luna finally caught up to Emma . . . right before being captured by the Authority’s security. Hearing that Chancellor Compton was waiting for his breakfast, Sam volunteered himself under the assumption that Bill is still sane. Unfortunately, Sam will soon learn in the finale that Bill is not the rational vampire he used to be. The uncertainty of that, along with Luna’s previous shifting issues present quite the precarious situation for the trio.

WILL RUSSELL FINALLY MEET THE TRUE DEATH?

The return of Russell Edgington ranked high on my list of highly anticipated plots this season on True Blood. However, like the brief appearance of Chris Meloni, the entire story has proven to be a bit anti-climatic. I’ve enjoyed watching the ancient vampire bond with Steve Newlin and definitely welcomed the disruption he brought to the Authority. I would be very surprised, however, if he survived the finale. I don’t know what his purpose would be in season 6 and I don’t like the threat he poses to some of my favorite characters – like Eric. It would be great to see the stripper fairies escort Russell to the true death, even if it is accompanied by some weird, disco-like dance routine.

WHY IS JASON SEEING DEAD PEOPLE?

If you check out the previews below, you’ll discover that Jason is seeing and hearing his dead parents. It will be interesting to learn exactly why this has happened – hopefully it is not the result of being knocked around one time too many. I suspect it may relate to that huge dose of light Jason took in when Russell used him as a shield last week. With so many issues to resolve in the finale, I suspect the mystery of Warlo and the death of Corbett and Michelle Stackhouse will carry over into season 6.

HOW DO YOU DEFEAT A WOLF PUMPED UP ON V?

Thanks to the episode synopsis provided by HBO, we know that Alcide will return to Bon Temps for another show down with JD. It will be interesting to see if his father joins him and what compels him to return. The biggest question, however, is how will Alcide match the advantage JD has thanks to a little v? Will Alcide cross over to the dark side and take a swig of vampire blood for the greater good? Unlikely.

WILL ANDY SET OFF A HUMAN VS. FAIRY WAR?

Andy’s got baby on the way, a broken promise to Holly and a light oath to keep. With the anti-shapeshifter Obamas under wraps and his cousin done with his smoke monster, the Bellefleurs are ready for a new crisis. If Holly forgives Andy, the family may find themselves in the middle of a war with the fairies next season.

WILL EVERYONE MAKE IT OUT ALIVE?

Sunday’s finale will mark the end of series creator Alan Ball’s run with the show. In an interview with TVLine.com, Ball promised that the final episode he penned for the series will have a big body count, “[p]robably more than any episode we’ve ever had . . . there’s a lot of carnage.” With so many of the show’s central characters at the Authority, it’s a pretty safe bet that the final standoff with the sanguinistas will not end well for some. Although I don’t have a True Blood character death wish list, there are definitely characters that I would like to see make it into season 6 – Eric, Pam, Tara, Jason, Jessica and Lafayette. In past seasons, Tara would never have made my “keeper” list but I love the potential of watching the Northman family grow and interact.
