Downton Abbey‘s third season will see the Crawley family entering the roaring ’20s, but their biggest challenge might just come from a certain American–at least as far as the Dowager Countess of Grantham (Dame Maggie Smith) is concerned.
As Cora Crawley’s visiting mother, Martha, iconic actress Shirley MacLaine will be trading barbs with Smith as their two characters’ cultures clash. In two new clips recently released by ITV, the Countess expresses her disdain for her daughter-in-law’s mother before offering Martha a chilly welcome to England.
Season three of Downton Abbey premieres on ITV in September, but those of us residing stateside will have to wait until January for the new season to debut on PBS. In the meantime, check out the clips below and keep an eye out for Matthew’s priceless expression at the Countess’s sly quipping in the first one.
What do you think of the Countess and Martha’s brewing rivalry so far?
