House of Lies “Bareback Town” Review

Most of what we have seen of House of Lies this season has been fun and fancy-free. However, in “Bareback Town” we got a look at the more serious side of the show.

For starters, it seems that our friend Marty may have found himself someone worth keeping around. Granted, she’s an ex-stripper, but she is so charming that we are supposed to forget about that. It’s good to see Marty have a connection with someone, but I don’t know how long this will last. At this point, she has yet to see many of the parts of Marty’s seedy underbelly. Those parts are going to reveal themselves sooner or later, and it will be interesting to see what the admittedly cozy relationship looks like after those parts of Marty are revealed.

On the work front, we were finally confronted with the question on the mind of a lot of the viewers: how far is Marty Kaan willing to go to secure the business? It’s a question that a lot of people answer on a daily basis. It’s no doubt to a tough question to answer. When faced with providing for your family or doing the “ethical” thing, I imagine many people would have different responses. Despite Jeanne’s constant pleading, Marty ultimately settles on business first. Luckily for some sick kids and Marty’s soul, landing the business forces him to reverse his course and come clean about the dangerous side effects of a new medication.

Because of the drama-heavy style of episode, a lot of the comedy ended up falling flat. Doug and Clyde’s argument over the Coco the dog story was sadly stripped directly from the classic Friends episode where we settle how Rachel came to be pregnant with Ross’s baby. For the record, Joey’s story about the woman crying in the lake is far better than Coco the cancer stricken dog. Still, I applaud Clyde’s effort.

That’s for my review, what did you think? Sound off in the comments below or on Twitter.
