Hawaii Five-0 “I Helu Pu” Review

Hawaii Five-0 (CBS) I HELU PU (THE RECKONING)

This episode of Hawaii Five-0 was called “I Helu Pu” (which is Hawaiian for “The Reckoning”) and that’s pretty much what this was. The Five-0 takes steps that go above and beyond that ever-elusive “line” and someone has to pay up when it’s all over.

This episode was intense from beginning to end. First we start out in the somewhat “present” and see facts that don’t make sense – Weston with blood on her hands and a frantic medical staff working on a man we’re led to believe is Steve (though I didn’t). After that we jump back 18 hours and see what events brought us there.

As the episode progresses, we see that the team apparently can’t even have a nice evening out, as the bodies will still (quite literally) drop in on them. When their investigation brings them to a man hiding out in the safety of the Russian consulate, they have no choice but to go over that invisible line and do whatever it takes to catch a murderer and rapist. Actually, they pretty much drove a truck over the line…or a van loaded with barrels of fake explosives.

Jumping back and forth between the past and the current, things were still a little confusing but in the end it all comes together and the Five-0 catches their man. But as the title suggested, someone is held accountable for everything, and that someone is Weston.

Here’s where it gets tough for me. I made no bones about the fact that I didn’t like Weston when they first introduced her, but I was determined to give her the benefit of the doubt when it was clear that she was sticking around for a while. Trouble is that I never did warm to her and usually just did my best to ignore her throughout most episodes. So while I understand that that final scene between her and Steve was supposed to be sad and maudlin, I just didn’t feel it. I feel bad admitting it, but a part of me was celebrating a little inside. Now I’m wondering if this is a stunt and she’ll be back in an episode or two. While I never actually hated her, I still felt the team was just right before she came into the picture and, please forgive me Weston fans, but I do hope this means she’s gone.

Oh and for those who think the reason I dislike Weston is that I am a crazy fangirl who doesn’t like anyone with Steve, I’d just like to point out that a) I’m actually more of a Danny girl, and b) I love Steve and Catherine together.

My favorite bits..

“Don’t get used to it, ’cause the second this is over, these heels are coming off.”
“I was hoping you would say that.”

The whole “topper” argument.

Wow, our crew looks very nice in all their fancy duds.

Kono explaining the idea of “renting” a dress to the guys.

The look of horror, then relief, when Danny watched Steve go over that balcony after Dennis.

Danny taking the guy down, only using one arm. Nice tackle.

The guys continuing the argument about the tickets.

Whoa! Did Danny just bust out some Russian? That was awesome.

Danny admitting to Steve the only three phrases he knew in Russian. LOL.

Finally understanding the reason for the bomb in Chin’s van, when I saw them evacuating Vonokov. Brilliant.

Jumping about six inches off of my couch when that car came out and hit Steve and Vonokov.

The nod Steve gave the woman when she got to see that they caught Vonokov.

Steve offering Catherine something even better than chocolates for Valentine’s Day. Aw.

So glad Lori is gone.  I will admit that I tried to give her a chance in the beginning but overtime it was easy to see there was no chemistry between her and the rest of the team.  Also I felt that the actress that plays her couldn’t act.  Her facial expressions never changed and everytime she spoke in the monotone voice of hers, it would make me cringe.  Hopefully, Lori will not be back.
I was glad to see Catherine again.  I like her.  She really seems to like Steve and he seems to really like her.  I hope they bring that character back.

So with you on Weston. In fact, I was telling my husband about who would be happy and who would be sad about her leaving.

And, it really irks me when folks accuse someone of having a jealous crush on a character when we don’t like a pairing. Can you tell this is a hot button for me? Something similar happened in the past to me, and it had everything to do with a ridiculous pairing and stupid addition to a team, and nothing to do with jealousy.

For the record, I am a Steve gal, but think he and Catherine are perfect together!

Anyway, I love the episodes when they get a chance to dress up – they all really rocked!

And, Danny’s Russian was awesome. Kind of like the only Italian I learned, despite growing up with two parents that were fluent. I only know several curse words and colloquial expressions. LOL….

Agree with you about Lori Weston. I’m a recent H50 convert, catching up on 2 seasons within a month (travel + Kindle Fire = H50). I never really felt like she worked with the dynamics of the team and agree with your other commenter that she basically had one facial expression. I am more of a fan of Steve and enjoy his obvious chemistry and history with Catherine. Can’t blame Lori for developing feelings for the guy, but I never felt the connection there.

Episode-wise, I think the right team member was cut in the wake line-crossing as she was put on the team to prevent and/or report to the governor on exactly that type of situation. She didn’t do her job; she was doing theirs. However, I do wonder who the Gov is going to bring in to replace her, because I don’t see him being comfortable with Steve having so much freedom.

My fav bits are your fav bits — the one-armed tackle and panic-to-relief expression on Danny’s face when Steve went over the side were probably the top. And as nice as they all looked gussied up, I have to say I enjoyed Steve in his fatigues greeting Cath at her hotel a teensy bit more. :)

Side note — is it me, or did Steve look unusually thin in this episode?
