In ‘Dangerous Liaisons’ the Mikaelson family host a ball. There Elena learns that Esther has a plan that will kill all of her children, Klaus hits on Caroline, events are set in motion that lead to Damon and Rebecca gettin’ it on, and Stefan broods.
Which is the whole episode in a nutshell. I suppose more detail could be added by saying that Esther is working in cahoots with one of her sons, or that she needed a drop of Elena’s blood, or that Elena feels guilty for not telling Elijah about the plan. Even Esther feels guilty about linking Elijah in with the rest of her kids, since he’s the good one and she really doesn’t want him dead.
For my part, Elijah and Klaus are the only ones I want to live. Esther is dull to watch, the other kids can’t act, and I’m not overly fond of Rebecca. Elijah is a nice guy and Klaus, well, I want to give him a hug and tell Caroline to take a chance on him. She hit it right on the head this week when she told Klaus that he compels people because he doesn’t know how to treat them, that he assumes everyone will dislike him. He agreed with her too. Could this be the start of Klaus trying to be more human? I hope so.
Speaking of being more human, there are times when I wish Stefan would just give up this vampiric coldness and go back to mooning over Elena. I’m no fan of them as a couple but christ on a cracker, this love triangle is boring. It would help if it was more of an actual triangle. A couple of kisses and Elena’s angsting and Stefan’s brooding and Damon is…being Damon. He’s always more fun when he’s schtupping a pretty girl and hanging out with Alaric; I’m hoping both of those things happen next week. (If we get more sadface over Elena, I’m going to watch the rest of the season while drunk, I swear.)
As much as I dislike most of them, the highlight of this episode was definitely the Mikaelson family unit, though perhaps not all for good reason. Klaus’s crush on Caroline, and Elijah being the nice one, were both pros. The cons would be that the newer Mikaelson kids were bland and unmemorable, and I spent the whole episode trying to put faces to names. (I can’t even remember what Kol or Finn looked like, aside from dark hair. Was there another one? I can’t even remember.)
I kind of wish Mystic Falls was real, though. Apparently people age really well there. Klaus looks about thirty and yet Esther is barely a decade older. Not to mention Bonnie and her youthful mother. It must be all that magic in the air…
