The Secret Circle “Valentine” Review

The Secret Circle: same crap, different day. In this week’s episode, ‘Valentine’, more bad guys come after Cassie, she makes more crappy decisions, Jake and Adam run around after her some more, she learns another new skill at random (witchy super strength, apparently), and Faye has a new magic toy. Quelle surprise, right?

I don’t know what I hated more about this episode. It seemed like it might be fairly decent episode (this is ignoring the Jake/Faye hookup because really, I just don’t care) up until Diana randomly veered out-of-character and took drugs. Then it went rapidly downhill. Even if I wanted to ignore the drugs and appreciate three pretty girls having a fun-filled slumber party, I couldn’t — because Cassie had to turn up all ‘my dad, my dad, ghosts!’

In fact, Cassie has become a one note character. It went from dark magic to her father and back again, and even in what was supposed to be a really sweet scene between her and Adam at the end, she had to go talking about her dad again, even though she did nothing but state the same shit she’s been saying for weeks. I was glad when they kissed because it finally shut her up.

I shouldn’t blame her for all the awfulness of this episode, though. There was Melissa ODing on devil’s spirit and apparently being fine after puking (kids: if this happens to your friend, call 911). And Adam’s possession was hilariously bad. Apparently being possessed by half a dozen tortured witchy souls looks like Gollum having a particularly bad hangover. I wanted to give him some paracetamol and a heat pack for that severely cricked neck, which I’m fairly sure wasn’t the intended audience reaction.

There were two interesting things to come out of this episode, though. Firstly, the guy playing Jake showed some inkling of actually being able to act. It wasn’t much — don’t break out the champagne just yet — but it was a start. He showcased no less than three facial expressions this week; I was impressed. Secondly, Faye’s new magic toy seems to be part of voodoo!dude’s plan to wake up his comatose girlfriend. I like this. It’s something different and, as far as we know, not connected to Cassie, dark magic or her father. Hallelujah.

And what about all that stuff with Dawn, Charles and Jane? You know, after Dawn was stabbed and revived last week, which in the show’s timeframe was just yesterday? No, you know, the follow up that showed us how Dawn was feeling and how Charles was reacting and whether Jane was finally back in town yet? Oh, no, sorry, my bad — none of that happened. In fact, Dawn wasn’t mentioned at all despite over half the episode happening in her house, Charles was nowhere to be seen, and Cassie seems to have forgotten that she has a grandmother.

Just another day in Chance Harbor then, eh?

Ha ha – I noted the exact same thing in my recap about Dawn and Charles. Did they just go on vacation after he healed her last week. And seriously: where the eff is Jane (Cassie’s grandma)?!

Hated the Melissa ODing stuff (die beyotch die!), but the Cassie stuff had some pretty good atmosphere, despite the familiarity. She really is a terrible decision maker, isn’t she?

I don’t know how the show expects us to buy Jane’s long absence. Firstly, they haven’t yet resolved her mindwhammying. Secondly, Cassie’s mother has been dead for – as far as I can tell from the show’s timeline – a matter of weeks. It doesn’t make sense that Jane would leave Cassie alone for so long right now just to go and visit friends.

Cassie needs to start asking questions, but that would mean making a GOOD decision, something which she is entirely incapable of doing apparently.

Melissa ODing was weak. Firstly, because I don’t think anyone cares enough about her or that storyline yet and secondly, because if you’re convulsing on the floor I don’t think you’re supposed to just puke and say ‘yup, I’m fine now’.

YES! Exactly! I can’t even add to it except don’t think Jake is that bad, and that the heat between Adam and Cassie is about as strong as my hugging my sister. YUCK. Ignoring the Chas/Dawn finale last week is just plain bad writing. Shame on you TSC. I so want to like you and support you but you keep letting me down.

I suppose I could give Jake a little more slack. Sure, Chris Zylka is fairly wooden most weeks, but he can’t be entirely awful if he’s in the new Spiderman flick. I think I just miss Nick — he was more interesting, in my opinion.

This show sidelines the adults way too much, especially considering how much better they are than the kids. I’m hoping for an adults-only episode at some point — Dawn, Charles, Ethan, Jane, maybe even John Blackwell, if he’s around — but I doubt the CW would ever do that.

I just still miss Nick. Its like everything i thought was cool about the show died when he did. I dont know if i should read anything more into that. Im almost ready to forget TSC exists. All it might take is Cassie saying, “My Dad.”

Yep. That might be all it takes.
