Supernatural “Plucky Pennywhistle’s Magic Menagerie” Review

Supernatural Plucky Pennywhistle's Magic Menagerie Season 7 Episode 14

Okay let’s see if I can stop giggling long enough to write this review. I don’t know if I can, but I’m gonna give it a try.

Tonight’s episode of Supernatural tapped into children’s deepest, darkest fears and though he’s not a little boy anymore, poor Sammy had to face some of his own terrors. The boys are on the case of some very strange happenings around a kid’s party joint known as “Plucky Pennywhistle’s Magic Menagerie” (which is also the name of the episode) and soon they find out that someone is taking drawings of children’s nightmares and making them come to life. When the guy behind it all gets wind that Sam and Dean are on his trail, he sends out a couple of monsters after Sammy. Monsters that also happen to be clowns. Talk about facing your fears.

In the end Sam and Dean prevail and Sammy survives his run-in with the glitter-bleeding, white-faced, evil-laughing beasties and I’m happy to say I really enjoyed this episode. And you want to know what I liked about it the most? Not that it was another one of those high-comedy episodes that we’ve all come to know and love over the years, but because we really are getting back to basics. Other than one phone call to Frank in the very beginning, the boys were on their own again. They solved every bit of the mystery about the case by themselves, just like they did way back in the day. No calls to anyone to do their research for them or pull an answer out of a convenient book. I still miss Bobby and I still miss Cas, but if the reason we had to lose them was so that the boys would be left to their own devices again, then I’m glad we’re getting to see more of that in these past couple episodes.

Plus it had killer clowns and killers unicorns. I mean seriously, does it EVER get any better than that?

My favorite bits..

LOL! Anyone else reminded of Yellow Fever when Sam came running around that corner? Kinda like Dean when he was running from the little dog.

LOVING the countdown clock.

Wait. If Dean is the Egg Man, does that make Sam the Bacon Keeper?

“So……we got dick on Dick?” – Hahaha!

No bars? No booze? No hot chicks of any kind? Youch, poor Dean.

Unicorn! Uh oh…..wait. Bad unicorn! Bad unicorn! WITH A RAINBOW COMING OUT OF ITS ASS?? I love this show so much right now.

Sammy trying to reassure himself that if a monster bleeds you can kill it. Guess that works until the thing starts bleeding glitter. THEN what?

Aw, so it was Dean’s words that Sam was saying to himself.

Well, I guess now we know where Sam’s hatred of clowns began. Poor Sammy.

Sam’s grimace when the chick said if the fears run wild, they affect people into adulthood. LOL. Ya think?

Haha! I love that the chick used duchebag as a verb. I’m so gonna start doing that now.

“Close, but no Seabiscuit.” – Har!

“Wait. Now unicorns are evil?”
“Yeah, obviously.”

I think Dean is having a little too much fun with this. Teehee…..Sam said ball washer.

Aw, the angel and God Squad reference made me miss Cas again.

Dean wanting the giant slinky.

Sam playing bad cop. Whoa. When he does stuff like that suddenly it makes me realize just how huge he is.

Basking in the knowledge that I could kick Dean’s ass at Skeeball. I totally rock at that game.

Dean and the little kid calling the cheater “Jackass.”

“That stuff tastes like butt.”

LOL! Laser eyes!

Sam pausing before going around the clown to chase the guy.

Loving the 70′s cop show music for the high speed foot chase.

“You ever ‘shroom in a ball pit??……. not that I would.”

Sam trying to find solace in the fact that at least he would see the giant robot coming.

Aha! I knew it was the super chipper guy from the toy counter.

Ya know what woulda been nice? If the CW hadn’t put a friggin’ El Pollo ad right over the “RIGHT FRIGGIN NOW” message on screen. Yeah I still laughed, but still. Sigh.

Four words – slow motion clown tooth.

Confetti!! It’s a parade!!

OMG it’s Sam and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat!

Dean apologizing to Sam for emotionally scarring him.

Sam referring to the clowns as Juggleos. Har.

Sam giving Dean the giant rainbow slinky. Aw.

The clown and I giggling as the final credits rolled.

First of all, what kid is afraid of unicorns? They’re beautiful,
mystical creatures for crying out loud. Second, since Stephen King
decided to scare the living snot out of me with IT some years back, I
totally sympathize with Sam’s fear of clowns. This episode wasn’t particularly deep, but I
don’t think every episode has to be a brain twister or
heartbreaker. This was a fun episode (despite the insanely creepy
clowns) and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Jared Padalecki keeps claiming that
he doesn’t do comedy well, but that fight between him and the two
clowns (and his reaction to all the clowns in general) was hilarious. I
don’t think I’ve ever laughed so hard as when the unicorn took off
running across the field while farting rainbows. Only on Supernatural
folks. LOL. The only thing that foot chase needed was a slow motion shot of Cliff and Dean jumping over a barrel or something before Dean tackled him. One thing I did notice about the brotherly moment at the
end of the episode (aside from Sam’s glitter-fest) was Sam’s reaction to Dean laughing. Sam just stood
there for a second and took in the moment of his brother actually having
a really good laugh. Dean hasn’t had much of anything to smile about,
much less laugh about, in recent years and I think Sam was glad that his
brother was having that moment. Even if it was at his (Sam’s) expense…again.

This episode was cute and the best part was Dean’s laugh! I haven’t  seen Dean laugh so hard since Free to be you and Me. But I wish Dean would stop apologizing for something that was not his fault! Dean was just a kid; Sam was John’s responsibility, and Sam should have told Dean that. Although, Dean giving Sam a clown as a token of sobriety at the end , PRICELESS!  Giant slinky! Love that toy!

What you said, but especially this:

“Ya know what woulda been nice? If the CW hadn’t put a friggin’ El Pollo
ad right over the “RIGHT FRIGGIN NOW” message on screen. Yeah I still
    laughed, but still. Sigh.”

Glad I am not the only one  – what really makes me seethe is when they do it over a show with captions like for instance “Switched at Birth” – where I need to be able to read it – and they just pop up this stupid ad that makes me not want to watch any show advertised like that. Sorry, guess this hit a hot button.

Anyway, back to unicorns with rainbows coming out of their rear – made me giggle hysterically especially since it was leaving the scene of a grisly murder – ok, does that make me twisted?

Sigh. I’m glad I’m not the only one who was bothered by that either. So annoying!!

Well, if you’re twisted for laughing at that then I’m WAYYYY twisted because I laughed my ARSE off at that. I love how much this show loves us, because that was so totally for us. LOL.
