The Vampire Diaries “Bringing Out the Dead” Review

Let’s make this summary of ‘Bringing Out the Dead’ short: Bonnie and her mom opened the coffin, Elijah un-daggered his other siblings, and then Esther came along to forgive Klaus and reunite her family. Also, more people were mysteriously murdered (or…almost murdered) by whoever killed the coroner, and we learned more about the original woman who started the doppleganger line (which really just confirmed what all of us had guessed).

I have no idea what to think about this episode.

It’s not that I didn’t like the episode. There was some great stuff. Caroline and her dad broke my heart, I quite liked Klaus’ plan to shack Elena up with Matt, and I was genuinely worried for a moment there that Alaric was about to die. But the episode seemed to end on a flat note for me. I mean if Klaus is now at peace, if he has his family and they’re all happy (or they will all pretend to be happy for their mother’s sake), then where can their story possibly go?

True, Klaus could still want to make hybrids, but why? If there’s anything we’ve learned about Klaus, it’s that he never wanted hybrids just for the sake of having them. I don’t think he wants to make a big power play just for the hell of it, and now that he has love and companionship, what would he get out of a bunch of hybrids?

The promo for next week’s The Vampire Diaries said that Esther wanted to meet with Elena. I’m going to theorise that the doppleganger may be able to help Esther reverse the spell she created (like how Bonnie and her mother working together could open the coffin). Could Esther be hoping to turn her children back into humans now that they’re in the relatively safe 21st century?

What about that mysterious murderer, eh? It’s supposedly not Dr Fell, and Damon and Stefan were both busy with Klaus and Elijah, so who does that leave? There’s Katherine, though I don’t see any reason why she would come back to Mystic Falls just to kill a couple of vampire hunters. Tyler, although he wouldn’t do it unless compelled, and what would Klaus get out of the deaths? There’s also Matt. I have no idea why he would kill anyone, but he has the knowledge and he’s the least likely viable suspect. I could be very very wrong (and I hope I am — I love our One True Human), but I’m placing my bets on Matt as our murderer for now.

TL;DR: a good episode that seemed to lead to a dead end for the Klaus storyline. What’s to come next week? I’m very curious. But if Klaus and Elijah end up pining over Elena in a Valentine’s themed episode, I may have to do some daggering of my own…

Candice, I thought for sure I had earned a shout out as the girl who TOTALLY CALLED IT!

I knew Original Mama was in the casket, like 3/4 weeks ago. I beat Vance! (first time for everything?)

Okay, this episode. As long as Elijah is conscious, I love it.

I also had a weird “Matt is the killer” vibe last night. I don’t know why. But he was a seemingly unnecessary character in the post-attack discussion scenes and if we know anything about TVD- it’s that there are no unnecessary scene-parts. (did that make sense?)

I also thought maybe Fell was trying to make vampies in order to have more vamp blood to do her “doctoring”.

I agree with EW on Original Mama. TVD has a history of introducing characters as one thing and then turning them 180. I think Mama definitely has plans up her sleeve.

Did I mention I love Elijah?

Oh yeah, you DID! Go you!

I still don’t ‘get’ Fell. She could be a nice guy but there’s something really off about her. Maybe I just don’t want Alaric dating someone who consciously gives someone vampire blood when it could so easily go wrong. (Didn’t I say last week that someone would surely become a vampire because of it? :P ) So I may be caring too much about a fictional character, but Alaric is awesome.

Elijah is fantastic. I thought he was going to screw over the Salvatores for a while there.

Candice, it’s not certain that Klaus will have love and campanionship (At least not from Kol or Elijah in my opinion, who might tolerate him but be pretty cold towards him). Esther (mama) seems suspicious and I am not convinced that she has really forgiven him. Rebekah isn’t certain to forgive him either (Although she is probably the most likely to do so) and we do not know anything about Finn.

Hmmmm …. Klaus suggests that Esther can kill him, which means that she still has her witch powers (So that she can unvamp him) and is not a vampire. I really would like to know how Esther survived having her heart ripped out, because I don’t see any reason whatsoever for Klaus lying about killing his mother. This makes no sense to me unless she is a witch-vampire hybrid, but earlier in the season, Rebekah said that being a vampire would mean losing her magic. Either Rebekah was misinformed, or there is somebody who pulled strings to mess with nature.
