This week The Secret Circle focused on the ‘Medallion’ (hence the rather pointed episode title). Cassie learned to use the medallion, it was Adam’s birthday, and Melissa got hooked on drugs. That really is the essence of the whole episode. There was a whole thing with the girl from the boat-vision, now a grown up psychic who tells Cassie that she can help her to use the medallion, but that was so pointless as to not really warrant mentioning though it technically formed the basis of the episode.
Let’s be honest here — all Cassie learned from evil!psychic chick is that she does indeed remember the spell she heard her father use. Which is a spell to make fires grow. Apparently this is enough to protect the circle in Cassie’s mind, although she does show further mastery of the medallion at the end of the episode, when she (I’m assuming) tracks down her father’s location. At no point did Cassie say ‘oops, I screwed up again by trusting someone I shouldn’t have’. I thought she had more sense.
Is anyone else thinking that the more Cassie explores her potential dark magic, the less the circle are actually focusing on protecting themselves? Since they bound together they’ve discovered that they can do magic in groups of two or more…and that’s about it. Shouldn’t they really be focusing on what they can do and exploring the full extent of their power? Also, if I had witch hunters trying to kill me, Cassie, I wouldn’t be doing solo dark magic in a house by myself. That’s prodding the beast, right there, and doing so while completely exposed. One spell to bring a fire to a roaring blaze does not protection make.
The only things in this episode that didn’t involve evil magic or who-wants-to-shack-up-with-who was Adam’s birthday party (although it was planned by Diana, and they did make eyes at each other) and Melissa’s foray into drug addiction (although she did tell dealer guy that he reminded her of her ex-boyfriend). I’ve come to the conclusion that Chance Harbour is based solely on relationships and that if an overwhelming number of people were unattached (or at least not thinking with their groins) the town would implode.
Thankfully the adults in this show are vaguely interesting still. Dawn had warned evil!psychic not to come back to town but plotted with her anyway — and got stabbed for her efforts. Charles drugged Ethan in order to get the magic crystal — and then used it to heal Dawn, much to her surprise. Will Ethan try to get the crystal back? Will Dawn soften towards Charles or become more wary of him? And will any of them give a damn that Jane Blake still hasn’t come home from her little trip, since Cassie seems fairly disinterested in the matter?
I still want to love The Secret Circle but it’s like the show is actively trying to bore me into a coma. But unless you have a reason to ship couples on this show (Cassie, really, both of those guys became Twilight levels of awful this week) or you’re masochistically curious about Cassie’s dark magic, I think we should all stock up on coffee before next week’s episode (which is called ‘Valentine’, to the surprise of exactly no one. They need to think up catchier titles).
What did you think of ‘Medallion’? Is your interest also waning, or am I being unfair? Do you ship Cassie with someone? Tell me why! Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
