Premiering January 28, 2012 at 8 pm ET is Lifetime’s based-on-a-true-story movie, THE PREGNANCY PROJECT. The Pregnancy Project stars Alexa Vega as Gaby Rodriguez, a senior in high school who picks a controversial idea for her senior project. Gaby decides to conduct a social experiment using herself as a guinea pig to flush out the stereotypes and prejudices agianst pregnant teens. The project ends up being much harder than she could have anticipated.
I did not know much about The Pregnancy Project before I watched it. Believing it would be just another afternoon special about how teen pregnancy is bad, I was pleasantly surprised to find it had more depth to it. Yes, the storyline itself is not that deep. Girl sees stereotypes, girl faces stereotypes directed at her, girl throws stereotypes back at the people expressing them. All ends well. The Pregnancy Project tries to take it a step further and explore not only the reaction to Gaby’s news, but Gaby’s reaction to the thoughtless opinions and comments that come her way.
The Pregnancy Project is worth a watch. Alexa Vega was able to convey a variety of emotions and easily conveyed the turmoil that Gaby went through, not only lying to everyone around her, but then later having to reveal that lie. I do wonder if the real Gaby Rodriguez found it all worth it. Were people’s opinions changed or did they just think Gaby was an untrustworthy friend?
While The Pregnancy Project did not have any groundbreaking scenes and I would not consider it must see TV, it did have quite the dramatic end scene and everything leading up to that was consistently even. I do wish there had been something more to the movie such as, perhaps, a more realistic ending. One would think with a deception as large as is portrayed in the movie, there would be more ramifications than those shown.
Tune into The Pregnancy Project on January 28, 2012 at 8 pm on Lifetime and then come back here and tell me what you thought. Afterschool special or cleverly crafted true story movie?
