Supernatural Thursdays: How Long Will You Be a Fan?

supernatural (CW) cast season 6

After writing last week’s article declaring my love of all things Castiel and my wishes for him to not only return to Supernatural, but continue breathing, I have to admit I was a bit surprised by how many of you commented to say that if Castiel left the show, so would you.

We all know how much I love Misha and Castiel and though it would tear my heart to pieces if they truly did take him away from us permanently, this move would not make me stop watching Supernatural. Like I said in the introduction to this column, I am with this show for the long haul. Though I may appear to bitch and moan all the friggin’ time occasionally, I ultimately have nothing but the utmost faith in our fearless writers.

But having read the comments by those of you who feel so strongly about giving up on the show if Castiel is killed off permanently, as well speaking in person to at least one fan who stopped watching years ago (due also to the direction of her favorite character), I can’t in good conscience put down you guys for your decision. Though I don’t feel the same way, I also believe that you have every right to feel the way you do.

The truth is, I’ve been in your shoes. Many years ago, a show I loved broke my own heart over and over again, constantly got rid of beloved characters, came up with storylines that I simply hated and finally, in one final straw that broke the camel’s back, wrote off my favorite. The death they gave him was so stupid (and I mean that literally, his death was actually used as a comedic moment, though the show was mostly a drama) that it just added insult to injury at that point. I watched one more episode to see if it could redeem itself in my eyes, but when it did not I gave up. I never watched again except years after it was cancelled, and ONLY because one of my favorite actors was in a few episodes, so I just watched those.

Since I can’t claim to be above giving up on a show, I can’t write off others who say that they would do the same for Supernatural. It breaks my heart and I could never see myself doing the same, except in a very drastic circumstance. In fact, about the only way I could see this happening is if they got rid of Sam and Dean (which of course would never happen, I’m just throwing out a worst-case scenario here). If that day ever came, then yes, I could very well see myself giving up on the show. I did after all when Bo and Luke Duke got replaced by their hapless cousins on the Dukes of Hazzard.

Other than that desperate end though, I don’t think I will ever give up on Supernatural. I will stick with it until that very sad day comes and we see those final credits roll one last time. Jeesh…I’m getting choked up just thinking about it. Here’s hoping that day is far, far, away.

Now obviously we know what some of the Castiel camp thinks and what might make some of them jump ship, but what about you Sam lovers and Dean lovers? Or just those of you who like the show in general, without being attached to any particular character? Do you guys have a breaking point? Or will you, like me (and hopefully many others), be with Supernatural until the very end?

Daemon, I understand feeling that you could never leave the series unless the core of the show was removed.

During the earlier seasons, the show could be summed up for me as: Dean and Sam’s journey.  But that changed in the later seasons and today if you ask me to sum up Supernatural I would do it by bringing up the names of the three individuals in the promotional photo being used in this article. Dean, Sam, and Cas.

THESE 3 CHARACTERS ARE SUPERNATURAL TO ME TODAY.

Losing Cas right now feels the same as it would have felt to lose Dean or Sam in the early seasons. If Castiel is permanently taken off the series then I won’t be able to watch. The show doesn’t feel the same for me anymore even this season with him in just a few episodes. I’m literally holding on by a thread but I won’t hold on at all without him next season.  I still love Supernatural, love Dean and Sam, but I love Castiel as much. And if the show had lost Dean, for example, I would feel the exact same way. I just couldn’t watch a show all about Sam or all about Cas. It needs all three to work because that’s what the show grew into over the last few years and that’s what I love.

So, if the all three characters were kept, I’d stay with it till the bitter end. I’m an old X-Files fan and I’ve stayed with that series until the present moment, from the 90s when I was a tiny kid to now that I’m in my 20s. When I love a series, I stay with it until the end and then some. I can see myself doing the same with SPN, watching season after season until it can’t go on anymore and then hoping for movies or comics or books based on the series and being a fan of that as well.

I’m intensely loyal to my show and I guess that’s why I can’t stand parting with Castiel. He’s like my family and I can’t just watch him get written off and feel like that’s okay… but short of losing my 3 boys, nothing else would ever make me leave the series.

    *****

I also wanted to address some points fans bring up:

    1) The point that it’s alright for Castiel to be written off the show because “that’s how the story goes”
My problem with this point is that the series itself, Supernatural as a whole, was slated to only be a 5 season show according to the creator, but that didn’t stop the CW and the new showrunners from continuing on with the series. So, clearly “the way the story goes” isn’t a rule that people apply evenly to the whole show. It’s alright to superficially extend the series as a whole and squeeze out 2 or 3 more seasons but fans can’t want Castiel’s arc to be extended as well? I don’t understand that logic…

    2) The point about Cas not being part of the show from the beginning so his loss is okay
Anyone saying this have any family? Like a spouse and children? You didn’t always have them, right? But now you do. Do you think that if they suddenly died tomorrow that your life could continue on as it was before you had your own family? That you could just slide back into the past and everything would be normal and feel good? No. So why should the Supernatural fandom, who’s family was extended to include Castiel for seasons 4-7 now suddenly have to be okay with just losing him. He wasn’t there from the beginning, but he eventually joined and he became I’d say the third most beloved character in the entire SPN universe. That’s a lot. So, unless you can say you’d have no problem losing your family because they weren’t there with you from the beginning, then please don’t try to make it seem okay to write Cas off because he wasn’t around in season 1.

    3) The point that Castiel’s story is running it’s natural course
I don’t believe anything about Supernatural is natural beyond season 5. The show was extended and the storylines were extended. What was the original endpoint for the whole series? for Dean? for Sam? For Cas? We just don’t know. But in addition to that, Jared’s latest interview made it seem like the reason why the show is getting rid of Cas is because he’s now a “magic button” and it’s too hard for the writers to insert him into the story creatively. That has nothing to do with a story running it’s natural course and everything to do with the writers feeling intimidated by the character. And I get it, it must be hard and I’m not a writer and I respect these people for their talent (and IMO, genius – even) but other shows have dealt with superior beings just fine. Think of the Heroes series or what about Superman? Jim Michaels, producer, worked in the show and he knows better than anyone that stories can be written about SUPER powerful beings. So why does Cas need to be written off just because writing him into a story is challenging? Challenges tend to bring about the best creativity. I wish I could tell the writers not to be afraid and just to be open to continuing with Castiel’s story.

I watch Supernatural for Dean and Sam. Everything and everyone else is just set dressing. Supernatural started out as a story about two brothers. Not two brothers and an angel, but two brothers. It is their journey that makes me come back week after week. Dean and Sam are the reason and purpose for Supernatural and their story and their story alone is all I want and care about.

    • Anonymous

I’m in the same boat. I watch for the brothers, everyone else can and likely will die at some point. Hell, the boys have died several times. No one really dies forever on this show. ;)

  • http://gaelicspirit.livejournal.com/ Amanda

Now I’m curious to know what show you’re referring to that killed off your favorite character….

I’m in agreement with you. This show snagged me from day 1, episode 1 because of the two leads. Because of the story of Dean and Sam and how it’s progressed and evolved. In so many ways? This story, this show, has changed me as well. I know you know what I mean by that, too. Writing, friendship, the way I think about the world and my personal journey through it…. Sure any of that could have happened without Supernatural’s influence, but the point is, for me, that was my catalyst.

I really like Castiel’s character. Love the humor and poignancy Misha brings to the story through that character. I like how he connected with Dean, most of all. And I am sad about what’s happened to him so far this season. But the inclusion of his character didn’t shift my focus. For me, it didn’t become about how Dean, Sam, and Cas were going to handle something, but rather about how something Cas is dealing with or doing or saying is going to ultimately affect Dean and Sam.

Same with Bobby. Or Ellen. Or Jo. Or…honestly, even John.

All of these characters mean something to me — but it’s because of how their lives and their stories affect our two heroes. Maybe the show itself has trained me to do this — to not become attached to characters outside of Dean and Sam because they are expendable. I’m not sure. All I know is that no matter what happens with Cas (or Bobby, or anyone else) as the story continues to play out, he wasn’t the reason I fell in love with the show, and so I wouldn’t leave because of him. His character provides richness and diversity and layers to the story, but (again, for me) he’s not a foundational element to the story.

So, how long will I be a fan? Always. Because even after the show ends, my hero was here. ;)

I don’t see myself ditching SPN ever. It’s kind of hard to put into words, but this show and this fandom are unlike anything else I’ve ever been a part of before. As far as the show is concerned, I think it has done what very few other shows have managed to do. It has managed to continually reinvent itself in new ways while staying fresh and involving. Does that mean I have loved every single episode and agreed with every single artistic direction the show has taken? Of course not. But what that does mean is that I’ve become invested in these characters and this story. I want to know what happens to Sam and Dean. I want to take this ride with them. But SPN isn’t just about Sam and Dean; or even Sam, Dean, and Cas. SPN is about family; the family you’re born into and the family that you make. The Winchester family includes not just Sam and Dean, but also Cas, Bobby, Rufus, Ellen, Jo, and (to a lesser extent) some of the other folks we’ve lost along the way. SPN is still telling interesting stories that have me excited for Friday nights. Yes, we’ve lost some major supporting characters that I loved and felt like shouldn’t have been taken away (Bobby anyone? Rufus anyone?) but the stories are still engaging for me. It’s still exciting television for me, and that’s what I think it comes down to in the end. So until the very last credits roll on the very last episode of SPN, I’m there. As far as the fandom is concerned, I think it’s like the mob. Once you’re in, you’re in for life. This fandom is amazing in so many ways, and it makes my heart happy to be a part of something that makes such a positive impact on the world. Kelly (@singmesweet) did a couple of great articles on the wonderful things this fandom has done, and it just makes me feel great to know that I’m a part of something that awesome. So, even after SPN airs its last episode (which I hope is a long way off) I’ll still be a fan.

I’m a fan of Supernatural for life. I have been interested in myths, legends and unexplained mysteries since I was a kid so Kripke created an ideal show for fans like me. Then there is the story of these two brothers which clinches it for me. Their relationship is as epic as Gilgamesh and Enkidu.

  • Xenascully

Back in the day of The X Files, I found myself utterly pissed when Mulder was, essentially, off of the show… I refused to keep watching. But then I found myself missing it. So, I went ahead and picked up a few later episodes, found myself intrigued by the “new guys” that kinda leaped onto the show, and had to go back to the beginning of that season and watch them all.

Now, that was a MAJOR character, and yeah he did come back…eventually.

Fact is, Supernatural didn’t start out with Castiel. In fact, our beloved angel didn’t show up until…what…4th season? We loved Supernatural before there was Castiel. And for that matter, before Bobby, either. When I see people get into a hissy fit over one of the side characters being killed off, I can’t help but to shake my head…

Here’s the thing; Cas wasn’t “written off” because he wasn’t working out, or because we didn’t like him. He was written off because THAT’S THE WAY THE STORY GOES. If some people can’t appreciate the story, then there isn’t really much of a reason for them to watch it. No sense in arguing with them. More squee’s for me! Thanks! ;) hehe

That said, I will watch Supernatural, no matter what. Well, I guess if they kill the boys off, that’d be my last straw. But unless that happens, I’m with it to the end, because I have faith in the writers and their ability to keep it going strong. This current season goes to prove that.

    • Xenascully

lemme just add to that point of it “being part of the story” real quick…

Yes. It is sad to lose Cas. Sad to lose Bobby. Really extremely…

It was sad to lose Ellen and Jo, too. It was sad to lose John. And hell, even Jess.

But this story is about how much the boys are having to face; what they deal with and what kind of people they are. They are heroes; ones most people don’t even know about. They are selfless and devoted and…just everything we could ever hope to be, honestly.

Watching them struggle through these types of things, and coming out the other side still wanting to do good for the world, is a huge inspiration. Real or not. The deaths of those close to them, and I think this is pretty much everyone now, really and truly makes it so that they are, without a doubt, only having EACH OTHER left in this world. This is pretty big. I, personally, can’t wait to see the upcoming episodes. It should be intense.

I got the tattoo, so I guess I’m in it for the long haul. ;) Seriously, as long as this show keeps on keeping on, I’ll be a fan, and long after as well.

  • http://twitter.com/millionsbyname Charli Millions

I’ve never been a fan of Castiel in fact i’d go as far as to say he was a major reason why I disliked lots of last season. I think he’s a supporting character as Bobby was but I am also someone who thinks they got too much screentime. I wouldn’t stop watching if he came back however cos I’m a fan of the show I still do feel though that the problem with him was they seemed to bring this so called ‘bond’ with Dean out of nowhere. He isn’t the type to trust people and while I’ll concede that while he was on their side Castiel got them out of tough spots and earned some trust stripes he ripped down Sam’s hell wall. I don’t know how Dean can forgive that, nor can I. So I’m fine with him coming back but I’d actually rather they finished him off and his character in a way that pleased those who disliked him and those who liked him. He can have a fitting end for his fans but I think his prescence really changed the dynamic of my favourite show and for me changed it in a fundamentally negative way. I actually know of people who stopped watching because of his character. I won’t but i’m not a fan. These are just my feelings and I do appreciate your article, just my two cents on it.

    • 1027phoenix

This exactly how I feel.  I don’t think the angel story should have gone past season 5.  There was no useful purpose for it to have continued.  I hope this will finally end the story line and go back to the SPN I fell in love with, Sam and Dean.

  • http://twitter.com/rana0x0 Rana

I would give up on this show if Dean doesn’t grow up a little.  He and Sam seem to have become Apocalypse Rockstars and can’t
relate to anyone anymore, not even the victims.  It makes me so sad.
Now that Castiel is leaving, if they don’t give Sam and Dean soul
colonics, I may leave too.  I’m sick of their immaturity towards those
who are different from them (Garth, Becky this season), and tired of
seeing it be the Jensen and Jared show with meta episodes.  We used to
have quality writing with real life comedy written into each episode.

How can the boys relate to humanity and be redeemable in our eyes if
there are no characters left that they BEFRIEND (not just work with on
rare occasion)?  When was the last time they listened to a victim?  When
was the last time they befriended a victim?  Krissy.  And before that?
*crickets chirping*  They are so cut off from reality, it’s not even
funny.  I don’t want to watch Rockstars.  I want to watch boys who fight
because they love their Mom and Dad and friends in Heaven, and want to
keep the peace on earth to protect all they love in Heaven.  They
haven’t remembered their parents in years.  Do they even care that they
are the front line to protecting Heaven if the fight spills over?

So, yeah, I’m a fan on the cusp.  Just tired of seeing no mention of
their family and friends.  Tired of them not making new friends.  Tired
of the lack of emotional growth.  You can’t have emotional growth if
there are no friends.  How many other hunters exist in this verse?  We
saw so many in the apocalypse.  Where are they now?  Surely those extras
and supporting actors can’t be that expensive for the CW.

I’m tired of fancy sets and fancy clothes and fancy special effects.  I
want to see the kids and families get saved.  It’s why John started Sam
and Dean hunting.  To save families from what they knew existed in the
dark.  It’s why I loved them and their story.  For Mary who failed her
family and redeemed herself.  For John who forgave her lies and became a
hunter to protect his very different young son and brave older son.
For all the friends they tried to protect and lost, but kept making
friends and reaching out, because they knew that was the life.  I want
them to save their brother Adam and save families.  Because it’s not just about
hunting things.  It’s about SAVING PEOPLE.  Mary Campbell Winchester was
a hunter long before they were, and denied herself Heaven for over 20
years protecting the families in their childhood home.  I want them to
    remember their Mom and Dad.

Just because Jensen and Jared are attractive, doesn’t make Sam and Dean perfect. I think there is still more emotional growth. I want them to realize how many families were torn apart by demons possessing parents, leaving children parentless and homeless. I want them to realize how they failed Bela Talbot. I want them to be faced with some failures and understand that going to hell doesn’t mean you don’t still have to make amends. I want Dean and Sam to realize how many women they have used. Used in a way they never would have let anyone use their Mother.

I just want them to grow. Why? Because of Heaven. My theory about Heaven is that the more emotional growth you experience on earth in this verse, the faster you get through your road in heaven and the more likely you may be reunited with family and friends. I want them to build memories of their Mom and Dad so they can get to them faster in heaven when they die. Because hunters die. And Sam and Dean deserve to be with their Mom and Dad forever.

And for what it is worth, I don’t chose favorites one way or another. But I’m a trained counselor. I am familiar with addictions and compulsions. I believe that when Crowley gave Castiel the 50,000 souls to give Raphael a punch, it began a compulsion for more power for Castiel’s character. I have seen so much Castiel pros and cons. I don’t know either way. But I do know that all the power Castiel was brought back with, added to the 50,000 souls he was given by Crowley may have twisted Castiel’s thinking to where he thought he could fix anything on his own. That’s what addictions and compulsions do. Make you feel you are invincible and prompt you to lie. And we had seen his character lean towards addiction previously. I don’t know if what Castiel did was right or wrong. But I’m a trained counselor who has an alcoholic father. I know addictions and compulsions. Power is an angel’s greatest weakness, I think. I don’t know, I’ve never had power.

I just want the boys to grow, remember their Mom and Dad, and make new friends.

I’m in it for the long haul! I’m with Cindy in being a fan of myth and urban legends so that part of the show will always be interesting. I’ve also been of fan of many of the characters, even some who have died, some who were in only one episode (who doesn’t still love Missouri?!) and I’m sure there will be new characters that will be fun as well!

  • http://twitter.com/tsarina777 Aspa

I will keep watching and loving the show until the very end. I ADORE Cas but I fell in love with the show because of Sam and Dean. Besides, it’s spn. No one is permanently dead in this show. I trust that even after his 3 episode ark later this season, they’ll still find a way for Cas (and Bobby) to show up again.

  • Mimi

I guess I’m lucky in that I love the show and I love all the characters. I honestly don’t have any favourites. So even if they get rid of a character I really like, there is still plenty for me to love. Which isn’t to say I won’t miss that character, but I understand that on a show like Supernatural where they’re fighting very powerful evil, not every character is going to survive. I was quite moved by Jim Beaver’s postmortem interview where he said, amongst many other wise things, that even though he’s the one who was killed off, he can’t argue with the dramatic reasons for it. Plus, I’m an eternal optimist, and I also know that on a show like Supernatural, characters can come back from the dead. So I’m in it until the end.

  • Adriana

“I don’t think I will ever give up on Supernatural. I will stick with it until that very sad day comes and we see those final credits roll one last time. Jeesh…I’m getting choked up just thinking about it. Here’s hoping that day is far, far, away.”  TOTALLY AGREE WITH THAT COMMENTARY (I got goosebumps just reading about the end) SUPERNATURAL FAN FOR AS LONG AS I LIVE

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_6MSEMGSAVLIXX7UOXRMEZPKUY4 hermit

I watch for Dean, that’s basically is.   The Dean and Cas profound bond made the show that much more interesting. Unfortunately, it’s being destroyed for the purpose of trying to rebuild a brotherly bond that no longer exists.

Maybe if the brotherly bond consisted of more than Dean taking care of Sam while Sam takes care of himself, I would appreciate it more, but as it is, Dean’s role is just being Sam’s caretaker while Sam has the hero’s journey time and again and after 6 years, it gets frustrating for us Dean fans.

At least Cas treated Dean with some affection and respect, something I haven’t seen from Sam since the middle of season 2.

So bring back Cas, and between Dean and Cas, I may actually enjoy the show.

That is if Gamble doesn’t allow her pettiness to continue destroying Dean and Cas just because of her favoritism towards Sam.

  • Anonymous

Nah I’m staying until THE END whenever that maybe hopefully later rather than sooner

  • http://dahne1.blogspot.com/ Dahne

The only way I leave Supernatural voluntarily is if one of the brothers leaves.  Other than that, I’ve been with the show since the day the pilot aired and I will be with it until the series finale.  I’ll be unhappy if a Castiel the powerful angel story line reappears.  I think he was used as a crutch by the writers whenever they found themselves backed into a corner.  However, if Cas comes back in a regular capacity, I’m still watching.  I trust the PTB; I have faith in Sera Gamble.  After all, they have been creating the show I have been most powerfully connected to for 7 years now.  This season is better than anything from midseason 4 for me.

  • Anonymous

I won’t ditch the show too unless they its okay to ditch Sam & Dean. But I do want Cas back & if possible Bobby too. Then again I think Bobby might be happier in heaven hangin out with Ellen, Jo & Ash. But I missed him already. We do have Frank now. And he seems to be okay.

  • KT

i will watch as long as Jensen and Jared are there. once theyre gone so am i.

  • Jamie

I’m there till the end! For me, I don’t understand why the Castiel fans would stop watching just cause they take him off the show. Mostly because the show was on for THREE YEARS before the character was introduced and if the people liked those three seasons WITHOUT Castiel, then I don’t understand them not liking it simply because he’s not on the show anymore. I watch for the story lines, the family moments and I will say because of Jensen and Jared. Those guys are simply the most amazing people and the most phenomenal actors and I love them to pieces!

  • JW

I could never imagine giving up this show and the story it tells, it means far (WAY) too much to me. Sure I might hate some things that have happened (Bobby, still cant believe they did that!) but I trust the writers, actors and the amazing crew to steer this ship and will follow them through hell and high water. I love Cas, and obviously Misha too,and would love to see him back for good in whatever form, but I would never hold a show to ransom by threatening to leave if they did not do what I want.

  • Valerie

You should have written ”Supernatural Friday’s”.  Supernatural hasn’t been on Thursday for 2 years now.

I will continue watching Supernatural as long as Sam and Dean are on the show.  To stop watching because a character is no longer on the show, I feel, is a disservice to Jarred and Jensen and all the hard work they and other on the show do.  This show has grown since Season 1 and will continue to grow.  As Jared said in an interview, if you have a magic button and you keep pushing that magic button, people will get tired of that.  To me Castiel is that magic button.  If Castiel were still around why would Sam and Dean need to be worried about getting hurt or even solving the case.  They just need to  call Castiel and say  – come zap us to this town, we’re hurt Castiel come fix us, there is a demon in this town zap it out of here, there’s some Leviathans here get rid of them. Sam and Dean would just become figure heads and Castiel would be running the show.

I loved Bobby and I was saddened a lot when he died, but I will still watch the show, even though he’s gone.  This show has grown and will continue to grown.  They take risks, which sometimes succeed and sometimes fail (I think having both Ruby and Bela was a failure), but that is what makes this show so good.  To many other shows, don’t want to rock the boat so they keep everything the same and then years later the ratings drop and they start to change things, but it is to late then.  With Supernatural that hasn’t happened, they have a vision and even though some fans might leave, they stay true to that vision.  If they had done what the fans wanted before we wouldn’t have seen Crowley or Lucifier, because in order to get Lucifier you had to first have Ruby and some people didn’t like Ruby.

I will continue to watch this show till the very end, which I hope will not be for a few more years, and when it is no longer on the air I will watch the DVD’s.

      Thanks for the comment!

FYI, the column is called “Supernatural Thursdays” as that is when we publish a new article every week, the day before the show airs. :o )

  • Camilledavros

it’s hard to watch the show or even think about supernatural since about 1/2 way through season 6. Everything that they have made Cas do, and have to go through is killing me. I don’t think I could even bring my self to watch it anymore if they really killed Cas for ever. I cry every firday. I could not watch it. Castiel is such a beautiful character, and has so much more to do. It would be such a waist to kill him

    • tia

you know you cas fans drive me nuts. didn’t you here the writers during the last 2011 cons??? they said they were going to take EVERYTHING the winchester brothers used/loved that helped them. my gawsh they took the IMPALA-(i miss that car). Its the story line this year. the winchester brothers get back to the basics. i loved cas but he is not spn. dean and sam are. when/if cas goes for good. i will still be watching spn. for the brothers and jensen and jarod. they diserve the loyalty of the fans. they made it what it is. not misha. (though i do like him) but i liked john, jo, and alot of the other “SIDE’ characters. long live spn!!!!!!

  • Sue

I was there at the start, and I’ll be there til the very end.  Castiel’s time is done, along with the rest of the angels.  Much as I love Misha, to keep him in the show would be bad, lazy writing.  He became the equivalent of Dr. Who’s sonic screwdriver, and so did Bobby.  I like that the boys have to think for themselves again.

  • Unique Jenique

I started watching this show when a roomate of mine had seasons 1 and 2 on DVD. I literally watched EVERY single episode in two days because the 3rd season was about to premier. From the first episode, I was in love, and I haven’t missed an episode. Gosh, I even watch the reruns on TNT every now and then. I was actually a little baffled when Castiel got killed off and didn’t have a chance to “mourn” his departure, because I thought there was NO WAY they would kill him off permanently. I still hope that. However, I will say that I was absolutely distraught when Bobby died, because I love him, and I have been pushing for Jim Beaver to move from Guest Star to Star. To see him not get that chance really crushed me and I hope he does return – either in full Bobby Singer mode, or in some supernatural form that Dean and Sam refuse to kill off.

But, like some have stated, I watch the show for Sam and Dean. So many have come and gone on this show, but it is the main characters that make it. And I think we as fans have forgotten that. We get so used to the people they love and encounter, that we can’t stand to lose them, just like Sam and Dean can’t. I will always be there for this amazing show, because there isn’t anything like it now (these days we have reality shows about hot girls, money, sex, and drinking). Supernatural is and always will be refreshing to me. I am in for the long haul – until the last of the credits roll and the only option I have is to either watch those reruns on TNT or buy the DVDs.

I thought I’d stay til the end, but even though I tried a few episodes since Swan Song, I havent been able to enjoy any of them just knowing that happened. Every single one of my deal breakers was in there, and I literally walked away from it feeling like I’d been slapped in the face. The fact that I even try to watch after that is a testament to how much I care about Dean, but it effectively made me lose any empathy or like I had for every other character on the show. Maybe a better topic would be “What would it take to make you a fan again?” I dont know what the answer would be, but I know it hasnt happened, and judging from the number of suck it up speeches Dean is being clobbered with this season, it never will.

It blows my mind to read when fans say they’ll stop being one if Cas doesn’t come back. The show is about the Winchesters. Sam and Dean. They were there from the pilot and will be there until the end. Cas turned up in season 4.
Fair enough, I get that people get pissed their favourite characters die – hell, I’m STILL not over Pamela, Ellen or Jo, and don’t even get me STARTED on my dear Bobby. But they are not what I started watching the show for and as much as I miss them so much (& re Bobby even more), they aren’t the essence of the show.

Don’t get me wrong, the way the boys interact with other characters is a huge part of the show because it helps them grow and evolve (& I still think the way they’re alienating the boys  so much is BEYOND necessary atm, but don’t get me started on that), but you started watching the show because of two brothers, an Impala and that good ol’ family business. No guest stars, no favourites. Except the boys. Obv. lol.

Now we may have strayed pretty far from that first trip to find their dad, but guest stars? Well, they come and go. It breaks your heart, but it happens, many, many times. And hell, they even come back once or twice to break our hearts a little more.
    But one constant? The boys.
And I’m sorry, but as controversial as it is, if you’ve been a fan from day one and NOW you’re just gonna give up just coz your fave character’s died? Boo frickin’ hoo.

I understand people’s issues with writing. I understand people’s issues with Sam & Dean character depth. I do. I’ve had those issues myself. Seven seasons aren’t all gonna be perfect. Everyone’s gonna bitch (me included), and everyone’s gonna get upset by one thing or other along the way.
But people who would give up on the show because ONE guest star has died (or more specifically one who hasn’t even been there half the time), or worst still threaten to ‘kill somebody’ if they kill Cas off, like I saw last week (What The Actual…?!?!?!?!?! o_O) need to ask themselves if they were even fans of Supernatural in the first place.

Phew. That felt good to get off my chest, it’s been bugging the heck outta me since last week!
*steps off soap box and takes cover* lol. ;-)

I couldn’t imagine not watching Supernatural. I honestly could not.

I found it Feb 2011 after a friend mentioned it to me and I recalled seeing the names of the principal characters in a few places on my journeys across fanfiction. I typed it in on YouTube and was met with Dean’s death at the end of season three.

    And that was it.

As horrible as it sounds, I enjoy hurt/comfort I enjoy gory, angsty scenes where there is blood and tears and everything in between. I enjoy it A LOT. It goes back to my ninties childhood and watching Cartoon Network before they decided that the cartoons we watched were too disturbing and revamped the whole channel, including getting rid of my favourite, bloodiest, anime programme DragonBall Z. Supernatural had all of this in BUCKET LOADS, not to mention the beautiful platonic relationship between the two brothers (something else I’m a huge fan of).

I bought season one on DVD maybe a week later and have been steadily collecting the seasons and working around the loss of Megavideo to watch the newest episodes ever since and cannot understand people who are refusing to watch it following the loss of Castiel.

I don’t think they’re wrong, not at all, it’s just a huge shame.

For me, the show was exactly what I was looking for. Bloody, gory, filled with angst…the main characters even DIED. It was gritty and heartbreaking and absolutely gorgeous to watch and I’ve loved every minute of it and will continue to do so, whether or not characters leave or die. Every death makes it more…believable, I suppose, and reinforces the angst and pain that I originally fell in love with. It has always been about Sam and Dean for me (alright, maybe more so Dean than Sam, but just by a little bit!) and to have additional characters as wonderful as Castiel and Bobby were just bonuses. That’s not to say I was upset when they died, because I was heartbroken, but I won’t deny that I did find myself eager to discover how Sam and Dean would react and, as usual, I was not disappointed.

Although I cannot class Supernatural as my favourite show anymore (my faith was restored in my native BBC again having watched the concluding episode of ‘Sherlock’ series two), it still ranks as my second-best show and I still plan to finish collecting the DVDs, get the tattoo when I’m of age and attend a Supernatural convention. The beauty of this show for me is the way it continues to hold my attention. I rediscovered DBZ a few years ago and it lost my attention to NCIS. I lost NCIS when I moved on to Supernatural and, despite becoming a fan of Merlin and Sherlock since then, I continue to type ‘Supernatural season 7′ into Google Search everyday and see if there are anymore spoilers available.

I think the appropriate thing to say would be that I’m with Supernatural come Hell or high water and I will be until that screen fades to black for the final time.
