Royal Pains (USA) Some Pig

Tonight’s episode of Royal Pains featured a band called “Some Pig,” which is also incidentally the title of the episode. I thought that learning that it was the band’s name would make the title seem less strange but as it turns out, it didn’t. Go figure.

Anywhoo…

In this episode Hank spends a good portion of it telling everyone that he’s fine with what Divya did, but the more he said it, the less inclined I was to believe it. So he keeps on second-guessing everything she does and the anger between the two of them festers until they finally have it out. It turns out that they’re both upset and hurt with each other for not trusting one another. I was thinking that maybe this thing between them would last longer than one episode but I’m happy they’ve figured it all out.

It’s a good thing Hank has everything worked out with Divya, because he’s definitely got his hands full. A lot of the press I’ve seen for this season has talked about Hank meeting his biggest medical challenge yet and I’m starting to get very worried for Jack. Once Hank figures out his buddy has lupus, things should have looked up but the poor guy is worse off than they thought. This show is supposed to be happy and sunny like the season it is set in, but after tonight I’m beginning to wonder if Hank might not be able to solve this one. Which doubly sucks because now I’ve got a major crush going on Jack.

Amidst the somewhat heavy storylines, Evan and Paige do their usual great job at keeping things light by playing house and basically acting adorable. In fact, even their medical issue has a cute name. I still think the idea of a “kissing bug” is beyond gross, but if you didn’t know what that meant, you might picture two cute little lady bugs sitting on a leaf sharing a smooch. In fact, I think I’m just going to go with that image. Let’s forget about the lesions, shall we?

My favorite bits….

Evan waking with a bed full of dogs. Too cute.

Evan and Paige’s talk quickly going from dogs to kids. Even more cute.

Evan scaring that poor dog to death for a peanut butter and banana sandwich. Though, those things are pretty darn good. My mom made the best when I was little.

“He is so going to tear the cape off her Batman.” – It may not have been an expression before but I’m so gonna use it now.

Hank telling Divya that they should “stick together” on patient visits. Oh yeah, he sounds like he’s totally fine with everything that happened. *insert sarcasm here*

Hank in shorts. That is all.

Stress? Oh come on, it’s the dogs, the hives have to be coming from the dogs, right?

Giving up a first born for a round of golf? That must be one heck of a course.

Evan massaging Paige while scratching himself. That takes some talent.

“I’m pregnant, aren’t I?” – Totally normal line on a show about a doctor. Coming out of the mouth of a man, however = absolutely hilarious. And that was when the crush began..

Kissing bugs??? Okay I’m officially grossed out. Guess I was wrong though, it’s not the dogs giving him hives after all.

LOL, that band guy totally just figured out what was up with Divya and Hank in about three seconds. Nicely done.

“Sorry boys. Sorry for the emasculation.”

I remember reading somewhere that Hank wasn’t going to be able to save every patient this season like he has done in the past. The creators wanted to add a bit of tension to the medical aspect. Hopefully Jack isn’t one of those patients because he is so endearing. I do lie the idea that we as the viewer can no longer just expect Hank to always save the day. It adds tension without resorting to unnecessary relationship drama.

Plus I really hope they address that lawsuit because as an Attorney I find it ridiculous. There is no court in the United States that would hold Divya liable for that wedding. The only remote chance he would have is a doctrine called Promissory Estoppel. That’s were a person does something in reliance on a promise you made them. In this case Divya made it clear she did not want a big expensive wedding. Every extravagant item he mentioned she tried to shoot down. He can’t honestly testify in court that he relied on any promises she made because she made it clear beforehand she didn’t want that type of wedding. Instead of paying Raj off she should have hired an attorney. That way she would avoid the emotional blackmail Raj is trying to pull by having him talk only with her attorney.

Plus she really needs to tell Hank about the threat to take her Hank-med stock. That could affect the company but like i said she should win that lawsuit anyway.

OK, the concept of inhaling aerosolized pig brains is just too damn gross to contemplate. I’m no vegan, but I’m with the vegan bandmember on this one–I’d never set foot in a place like that. And BTW, I wasn’t all that impressed with that band’s music/singing.

Meanwhile, remember Boris? Y’know, that multimillionaire whose guest house Hank and Evan occupy? The man who’s allegedly being poisoned by someone within his own family? Any word on that?

This was a much better episode than “Barnes”.

I truly enjoy Paige and Evan as a couple. It’s a joy to see them just enjoy each other’s company, and grow in their relationship…like normal people do. Much better than the on-again/off-again tedium of Jank, or the twisted power politics of Boris and Marissa!

I like Jack. His humor is a good foil for Hank’s, and he brings out so much good in Jill. Chronic illness is something RP hasn’t really dealt with, and it will be a very different experience for Hank, who has a total big brother complex and wants to fix everything. It could be a very maturing thing for him.

The Patient of the Week, the band, was pretty interesting, and I think the interpersonal conflicts of the band made an interesting backdrop for the interpersonal conflicts in HankMed. Nice way to mirror the ongoing plot in the episodic plot! I always admire clever narrative strategy!

No Boris again. I’ve heard elsewhere that Campbell Scott may be taking a step back for a while because of his own new baby. Understandable. And if he made that decision late in the game, that might account for the strangely rushed feel of the season…not in terms of story timelines, which are sometimes glacial. But it feels like they’re desperately trying to fill for something missing. The stories are developing in fits and starts, and it just doesn’t flow well to me. I’ll be interested to see if the pacing is better in season 4.

Seriously? I want Evan/Paige to SPLIT. I find the revolting. Evan/Divya had waaaaay more chemistry and after 3 seasons, I feel like we need some pay-off. Was glad to finally get them in a scene together!

You are weird. Yes, Evan and Divya worked interestingly together, but I quite like Evan and Paige, and that’s saying something since I’m usually annoyed by overly cutesy relationships.
