NCIS “A Desperate Man” Review

NCIS (CBS) A Desperate Man

Tonight’s NCIS is called “A Desperate Man” and after watching it, I think that may apply to CI Ray. After the previews at the end of last week’s episode, I had an idea in my head of what was going to happen tonight. But of all the ways I saw this one going down, having CI Ray be the guy responsible for the victim’s death and the death of another man was not one of them.

One thing I got right though was the amount of “Tiva” moments that could be read into this one. Now I know I’ve said before that I’m not a fan so I’m not going to get into all that again, but lest all the Tiva fans out there think I’ve had it in for Ziva since day one or something, let me say this: I actually liked the idea of Tony and Ziva as a couple…way back in season 3. That opening scene in “Under Covers” was one of the hottest scenes ever and still makes me smile whenever I see it in re-runs. But for me too much time has passed. Too much stuff has happened between them (not all of it good) and because of that I just don’t see them like I did way back then. Perhaps that will change, but for now that’s how I feel. Does that mean I will fly into a rage if they do end up together? No. I love this show and I’m willing to give just about any storyline a shot.

As for now, I’m happy to see Tony and Ziva, and the rest of the team for that matter, continuing to be the family that they’ve been for a while now. Tony giving Ziva all the love advice throughout the episode was sweet, as was Gibbs’ and Abby’s reactions when they thought that Ziva might accept Ray’s proposal.

My favorite bits..

Tony getting McGee to admit how long it had been since he’d gotten.erm.lucky.

“Why is Jimmy Palmer talking to a girl from 1985?” – Wait. Jimmy has a time machine?

Jimmy trying to suggest some new vows for his wedding day. I particularly enjoyed “until you lose all your hair, gain 300 lbs and I can’t stand looking at you anymore.”

“This is the most wonderful time of your life. Enjoy it. Hopefully you’ll only have to do it once.”

The way McGee said “God help me, what??” when Tony wouldn’t leave his desk. LOL.

An endless string of waitresses and veterinarians? Damn it, I knew I should have kept up with my original plan to go to vet school. I mean if it meant getting a guy like Tony…..

Haha! Abby is right. Gibbs and the mannequin DO look cute together.

Ziva finally admitting why she was not answering Ray’s calls. Aw, that was kind of sad. I can see how that would remind her of her dad though.

Ooh! Nice jump Tony!

Tony glancing over at Tony when the husband was talking about how he and his wife may have been apart a lot but it was worth it whenever they were together.

Tony volunteering to talk to the victim’s husband. Cop to cop.

Whoa. I was not expecting the victim to be connected to Ray.

Okay Ray, that may not have been the right time to ask that particular question. I’m thinking the answer is probably going to be no.

Ooh, talking about wanting the kids to have Ziva’s eye. Low blow, and very nicely done, Ray.

Finding out that Ray told Tony about wanting to propose to Ziva.

Tony encouraging Ziva to jump in with both feet if she loved Ray.

Gibbs telling Ziva that he was happy for her. Aw.

Cracking up at the idea of a Jimmy/Ziva double wedding.

Ziva telling Gibbs not to stop her, and him letting her go. I guess he saw that she was serious.

Whoa! I’m guessing that Ray wasn’t expecting to get punched in the nose when Ziva walked up to the plane.

Boy, Ray screwed up in so many ways. Lost Ziva, lost his job. What an idiot.

Gibbs touching Ziva’s hair when he asked her what she was going to do.

“Content? But are you happy?” – Wow, that’s a question we should all ask ourselves, isn’t it?

    Great review as always, Moki!

What I disliked most about this episode was the way the writers have set things up lately. ‘Housekeeping’ got rid of E.J. for good and this episode got rid of Ray for good. It’s so annoying that in back-to-back episodes they are being so blatant in their paving the way for a Tony/Ziva relationship.

I agree that back in season 3 their relationship would have been a better idea and that too much has happened in between, but like I said last week, I’m willing to wait and see. But, I would really love it if the writer’s didn’t drop the Relationship Anvil on us, didn’t make it so obvious that they’re paving the way for that potential relationship. And, I’m thinking fans of the relationship are tired of getting toyed with. It’s time for the writers to make a decision and stick with it.

Another thought I had is that these revelations, changes and opportunities in the characters lives that have been made so far this season are all leading up to the big 200th episode. I really hope the writers are going to let the storylines play out naturally instead of forcing things just for the sake of an anniversary episode.

As a fan of the show though, I will wait and see – like always.

I felt this episode was continuing to be true to what I see as team-family moments. Gibbs asking what he could do for Ziva when she got in the car (in what was to me a very fatherly way), the parallels between what Ziva’s dad and CIA Ray said to her, the question from the widower (an oh, by the way, look, it’s Colonel Young from Stargate Universe…. and Det. Flowers had a recurring role on Stargate Altantis) about having a clue what it was like to lose someone.

I wonder if Palmer’s wedding will be on the 200th? And, yeah, his take on alternate vows was really funny. Abby and her wedding excitement – is so Abby……

I like the idea of Tony and Ziva… I’m not a “TIVA” fan perse… but I think the chances of them forming something more serious is better now than it has ever been.  Season three Otny and Ziva were ‘teenagers’ playing at being adults.  Both characters have grown big time over the course of the show and now if at the end of it when all is said and done with all their history.  If they can accept each other now, they have  deeper chance of making it work than just a quick roll in the hay so to speak!
