It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia “High School Reunion” Review

When I found out that “High School Reunion” would be a two-part episode, I was immediately excited. Previous two-part episodes of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, such as “The Gang Gets Whacked” and “Mac and Charlie Die” have included some of the best moments of the series. The first part of “High School Reunion” did not disappoint. After all, when you take an event that is already prime for awkward moments and throw the gang in the mix you know that you are in for lots of laughs, revelations and a bit of FACE!

To draw upon the holiday spirit, “High School Reunion” was in many ways like a visit from the ghosts of Christmas past – or in this case the many people who have had their lives turned upside down because they crossed paths with the gang. Let’s recap:

-Brad Fisher: An old high school flame who sought vengeance against Dee and countless other women to make up for all the rejection he faced in high school due to his horrible acne, or as Dee called it his “pizza face.” When we last saw Brad, his clear skin was in serious danger as he had just received a box of hornets as a “gift” from Charlie. Brad was the first awkward encounter at the reunion as he sat at the name tag table with skin horribly damaged by hornet stings.

-The Waitress: Sadly, the waitress has started drinking again and was a sloppy, drunken mess at the reunion. I always thought that Dee was exaggerating a bit when she teased The Waitress about how forgettable she was in high school. Unfortunately, Dee was absolutely correct as The Waitress was so forgettable she did not even have a name tag. Well, at least she will always have Charlie’s love.

-Rickety Cricket: Rickety! I love a Rickety Cricket appearance and upon first seeing him, I really believed that he turned his life around and somehow returned to the church. Although it was sad to learn that this was all a scheme, I’m proud that Cricket has at least learned to become better at taking advantage of other people. He was *this* close to walking away with a nice little parting gift. Sadly for Cricket, his plot was thwarted and his really aggressive ringworm condition was exposed in a moment of humiliation and ridicule. Speaking of ring worms, the passing of the ring worm between Charlie and Mac was gross to both hear and imagine. We never really can seem to get away from good ol’ Poppins.

-Maureen: I had completely forgotten that in what had to have been a moment of complete insanity that Dennis actually married someone. “Dead tooth” Maureen was at the reunion with her horrible breath and a dead tooth diamond she purchased thanks to Dennis’s alimony payments (which we learned are now a bit behind).

The funniest moment of the night definitely belongs to Ronald “Mac” McDonald! In all of my years of watching It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, I never really gave much thought to what Mac’s full name was. Learning that his name is Ronald McDonald is hands down one of my favorite moments of the entire series. Mac’s parents totally look like the type of people that would name their child Ronald McDonald as a tribute to the place of his conception. The name also gave an entirely new meaning to a joke I made a few weeks ago in which I referred to Mac as “Big Mac.” Ha!

As the episode closed, the gang was on the losing side of the reunion popularity contest. Ronald McDonald, Charlie and Frank were the victims of brutal, atomic wedgies and Dee and Dennis were accused of having ring worm. The gang may be down but I know they are not out. After 7 seasons of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, we know that they are specialists in dishing out vengeance and comeuppance in epic proportions. We also know that there is a “plan B” in place in the event the reunion did not go well. I am really excited to see what the plan is and how the gang will ruin the lives of their former classmates. It’s pretty clear from part 1, that Dennis is going to make an aggressive effort at sleeping with Tim Murphy’s wife, Chrsity, as pay back for the reunion and for Tim sleeping with his prom date. I also worry for Dee. After her rude behavior while she was briefly popular at the reunion and the fact that Frank has her back brace in the car, there is a good chance that she may end up as collateral damage once again.

Other favorite moments/quotes:
“Black butts are good.” – Frank

“It wafted over here.” – Frank referring to the horrible smell coming from Maureen’s dead tooth.

Charlie nodding along to Dee’s rendition of “Baby Got Back.”

Anytime Dennis says, “fire up”, “pop” or “blast.”

I hope next week will give us some more fun cameos. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for an appearance by the McPoyle family. Break out the milk! What did you think of first part of “High School Reunion” on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia? Any predictions about what plan B is?
