Well, Grimm has done versions of the three bears, bee people, and red riding hood, it was only a matter of time until they visited the Pied Piper. In “Danse Macabre”, Grimm tackles the flute playing leader, but instead of a flute, he plays a violin.
We start out with the death of a high school teacher. I’m not talking about a normal, every day run of the mill death – nope – this guy gets it BAD. After settling into his car, he realizes that it is full of rats. Not just any rats. These rats (for reasons I have yet to understand) are like cannibal rats that end up eating away his flesh in a matter of hours. When Nick and Hank arrive on the scene, the teacher is nothing but a skeleton.
It was a little ridiculous since Grimm never does explain why the rats suddenly decided they craved human flesh, but that aside, Nick and Hank are led the home of a student – whose father just happens to be an exterminator.
Since this is Nick, we know that this kid is not what he appears to be. Right away we notice that the caged rats (exterminators keep their catches now?) respond to the kid’s violin playing and seem in some sort of a trance. The kid is a great player which leads the detectives to another group of teens – these kids are not fans of “rat boy” and had (unbeknownst to Nick and Hank) were responsible for the kid’s suspension.
The exterminator turns out to be a creature, and after the father is arrested, Nick tries to assure his son that Grimm or not, he’s not going to hurt him. Nick even enlists the help of Monroe to go talk to the boy and tell him not to throw away his talent. And suddenly Grimm is an after school special.
It wasn’t a great episode aside from the last few seconds. A repairman (who also happens to be a rat person) that has come to fix Nick and Juliet’s refrigerator recognizes him as a Grimm. He quickly exits their house begging Nick not to hurt him, but returns the next day when Nick is gone to retrieve his tools.
Juliette thinks that the repairman must have been arrested by Nick at some point, which caused him to bolt from the house, however the repairman explains that he’s afraid of Nick… and that he has a family, friends, and lives a good life – Nick should leave him alone.
Needless to say, Juliette is very confused by this statement… and now we have to wait to find out what she’s going to as Nick.
Other than the possibility of Juliette finding out about Nick nothing overly exciting happened this week. The pied piper story was a bit disturbing, mainly because rats creep me out. The thought of someone being able to control a swarm of them is enough to give me the chills.
I did enjoy that the bullies got what was coming to them, and it was sort of poetic that the metaphorical rats were attacked by actual rats – especially since said animals were being controlled by a DJ in a cat costume.
Sometimes I wonder what I’m watching when I sit down to Grimm. What did you think of “Danse Macabre”? Are you still on board with Grimm or are the story lines getting a bit stale?
