Community “Regional Holiday Music” Review

Community Regional Holiday Music

Well, that’s more like it! After the last couple episodes of Community have been notably lacking in the laughs department ever since, we’re given “Regional Holiday Music”. This is the final episode before the much hyped and criticized hiatus of the show, so why not go out with a bang by bringing down one of the most popular show’s on TV?!

The Glee references came hard and fast, and it was great seeing just how completely they incorporated the theme. Everything from the a cappella music in the background, to the weird red-headed pianist that’s inexplicably in so many Glee episodes, it truly was a very thorough and hilarious send-up. It’s possible that a lot of jokes will be lost on those who don’t also watch the hit FOX show, but the episode had plenty here to entertain apart from that.

I was pretty shocked at the sheer amount of songs. While they weren’t all a huge success, you quickly forgot about the stinkers because a brand new song would start only a couple minutes later. The standouts for me were Troy and Abed’s rap, as well as the child’s choir singing to Shirley about how they don’t teach about Jesus in schools. I probably would have enjoyed Annie’s performance a lot more if she didn’t have that obnoxious Betty Boop voice going the whole time.

The end of the episode was a very heartwarming and appropriate way to leave us for the time being. We know that we’ll be seeing the rest of season three at some point, and having a nice little visual of our favorite community college study group all gathered around a television was a perfect way to cap off the first half of this season.

Random Thoughts:

- My favorite running joke was Pierce not knowing what regionals is. It was a great ongoing dig at Glee, which has always placed such a huge importance on these lame little competitions.

- I loved Donald Glover getting to show off some of his rapping skills. I’m sure I’ve said it before, but if you guys haven’t heard his alter ego, Childish Gambino, I strongly recommend you do so.

- The final scene was a great little callback to the end of the last Christmas special, where we see the study group in a reflection on one of the claymation TVs.

ugh the overly cutesy baby voice Annie used really started to grate on me by the end of that song.  Makes me think that guys really do just tune out what women say and just enjoy the visuals…
By the way was Betty Boop THAT annoying when she was around?

I did, however, appreciate the bite in the writing of that scene (as well as the rest of the episode) showing how an intelligent girl like Annie ends up dumbing herself down and almost debasing herself due to this manipulative form of “Christmas cheer” and glee.

I thoroughly enjoyed every time Abed and Troy sang– their rap was definitely my fav song from the episode.  I also got a kick out of their quick historic tour through the musical decades of Pierce’s youth in Baby Boomer Santa.  I was cracking up by the time Pierce joined in to say he was Baby Boomer Santa (despite how borderline disturbing that part was).  Shirley’s voice really is awesome– and I loved how happy the kids get when she joins in compared to their dead-eyed listlessness when they sang about the Constitution.

I LOVE Dan for calling out on the reverse bullying happening around “Glee”.  Because it really undermines the positive impact Glee CAN have on people.  And nice shout out to Kings of Leon!

I agree with you that the end scene was a really sweet way to leave us until Spring (I remain optimistic that they will be slated there).

And heheh that end tag– Dean…..Dong….
