Baby’s first Christmas is always a big deal and in the aptly titled episode of Up All Night, “First Christmas,” we got to see adorable Amy’s holiday with her slightly neurotic, but well-meaning parents.
Based on Amy’s reaction to the crazy neighbor’s decorations, Regan decides that her daughter needs to be dazzled with wooden Santas. When those fall through, Grandma (in another delectable guest appearance by Blythe Danner) comes through with some stolen reindeer, which she and Regan drunkenly, but lovingly, haul onto the roof.
Meanwhile, Chris wants to buy Regan the best present, but he doesn’t want to use her money to do it. Since he’s been out of work for over a year, he has to sell of some of his hockey memorabilia and then brave the mall on Christmas Eve to get her a diamond bracelet. Some women might say that such efforts are completely unnecessary, but no one that I know would ever turn down a diamond tennis bracelet from the man they love and Regan was no exception. Of course, her present to him of a puck from the US vs. Russia miracle Olympic game for his collection was all the more poignant. But now he can build a new collection and he will always be the husband who brought home diamonds for Christmas.
But the best story of the night went to Ava. She’s still flinging with Jason Lee’s Kevin, only it turns more serious when he cancels their ski holiday in order to spend Christmas with his ex-wife and daughter. Ava winds up at Chris and Regan’s, keeping an eye on Kevin’s house. Her efforts even lead her to giving false home of an extreme home makeover to another neighbor in order to get into their house to have a better view of his backyard.
Most guys would find this behavior insane, but Kevin laughs it off and tells Ava he loves her, a sentiment that she returns. I like these two as a couple. He balances out her crazy and she sparks up his suburban life.
This won’t go down as the greatest holiday sit-com episode ever, but it was a nice bit of Christmas cheer.
