Survivor South Pacific returned this week with “Ticking Time Bomb”, and got right to showing us Cochran’s arrival at Redemption Island. Ozzy completely deadpanning to the camera “He really doesn’t stand a chance” gave me one of my biggest belly laughs of the season. Cochran’s outrage at the Upolu tribe for “using” him was a little odd, as you would think he’d assume that being the one to switch tribes would automatically put him at the bottom of the pack on his new tribe. I thought he was supposed to be a student of the game?!
Another puzzling conversation was had between Edna and Coach, as Edna kept tearfully saying to Coach that she can’t handle all of the deception going on in the tribe. This all just came off a bit goofy and desperate, and a little similar to Cochran’s speech in a way, in that you can’t help but ask out loud to the TV “Haven’t you ever seen Survivor?!” That’s just how it works, Edna. You couldn’t help but agree with Coach when he says “Everybody get’s deceived”!
After that hilarious line to start off the episode with Ozzy said that Cochran doesn’t have a chance, man did he get close! That was probably the closest Redemption Island duel we’ve ever seen on this show, and the mere idea of Cochran beating Ozzy in a challenge seemed so ridiculous to even consider. While I never really thought Cochran would win, his enthusiasm for the game is infectious and I hope he’s able to return to Survivor in some capacity.
So this was the big family reunion episode, which is always a tearjerker for me. I was really, really hoping that Russell would be the family member that came to visit Brandon, but instead we got his brother. Turns out, his brother is almost as good as the real thing! Seeing Brandon’s dad try to strong arm Coach into keeping Brandon around was a classic Hantz move, and I hope he was able to talk some sense into Brandon and make sure he’s in it to win it.
After Coach dominated the clever little pineapple puzzle immunity challenge (Did you see how much room he had left to move?!), Edna started to get into panic mode and started talking to everybody around camp. I honestly don’t know who I wanted to go more: Brandon or Edna. Brandon is definitely an immature little punk, and his little dig at Edna during the challenge was uncalled for, but I honestly would just chalk that up to adolescent arrogance rather than malevolence. Edna came off much more desperate and mean spirited than Brandon did, even as she tried to paint such an evil and crafty picture of him, apparently everybody saw through that. Edna was voted off and sent to play Ozzy next week, and I can’t wait to see what happens!
Random Thoughts:
- Couldn’t they have wiped off the dang screen on the Sprint phone before watching their video messages? Or were they trying to show off the water repellant feature on the Evo 3D?
- Sophie dumping all of those requests to her dad at the meeting was a little irritating. Is that really what you want your daughter to tell you after not seeing you for 30 days?
- I really want to know what Edna said she would eat a piece of in order to stay in!
