Hart of Dixie “Hairdos & Holidays” Review

Hart Of Dixie Hairdos and Holidays Episode 10 (10)

It’s Christmas time on Hart of Dixie and just like everything else in Bluebell, Christmas is celebrated in a way as unique as the town residents. In “Haridos & Holidays”, Lemon and Zoe’s rivalry finally comes to odds through the Miss Cinnamon Cider Pageant. Lemon is coaching Magnolia to carry on the Breeland tradition of winning the competition, while Zoe is helping Rose battle against the younger Breeland and to break their winning streak.

George and Wade are responsible for finding Lemon an 18 foot tree for the center of town square, and when Wade’s connection falls through, the boys take to some rather unorthodox methods to ensure Lemon has her perfect Douglas Fir tree. Wade’s plan ends up with both men spending the night in a jail cell, which happens to be the perfect time for Wade to ask George exactly what’s going on with him and Zoe… Which is a pretty excellent question as George has been with Lemon for “8 billion years”.

George admits that he and Zoe have a flirtation but makes it clear that he and Lemon are going to get married and be together forever. Yeah, we’ll see about that George. Not only for the reason named Zoe Hart, but also because of Lemon and Lavon’s relationship, which we got to see glimpses of this week. How exactly did these two get together? It turns out Lavon is even more wonderful than we’ve seen each week. Last Christmas, Lemon discovered that her mother was living on 30 miles outside of Bluebell and never returned or even tried to contact her or her husband. She’s obviously upset about this turn of events, and with George busy in New York, has no one to lean on. Queue Lavon who is a literal shoulder for Lemon to cry on, not to mention a friend with all the right things to say.

When Lemon decides to make the trip to see her mother (leaving Magnolia to fend for herself in the pageant), she discovers that the ex Mrs. Breeland is happily remarried with another daughter. Lemon does not confront her mother, instead she turns and heads back home and promptly to Lavon. This is where the good old fashioned drama kicks in. In a heartbreaking move, Lavon closes the door on Lemon as she cries on his doorstep. He tells her that she needs to confide in George. It’s horribly heartbreaking, and truthfully I don’t know who I felt worse for – the mayor or Lemon.

Wade finally gets the nerve to ask Zoe out for a drink, and judging by the twinkle in her eye, I think we can expect some Zoe/Wade action when Hart of Dixie returns from winter hiatus. Or at least I can dream of a Wade and Zoe pairing… maybe Santa will give me that for Christmas?

Each week on Hart of Dixie I learn to love Lemon Breeland just a little bit more. “Hairdos & Holidays” was no exception. Lemon’s back story about her mother not only showed a little glimpse of why she is so rooted in the community and tradition, but it also shows why Lemon isn’t quite as sure of herself as she appears. Her mother abandoned her and she is now responsible for caring for her sister, not to mention being the Princess of Bluebell. Poor Lemon. Seeing her share her vulnerable side with Lavon was not only touching, it was needed.

I will say one other thing: Hart of Dixie just keeps getting better and better. The writing in this week’s episode far surpassed the previous weeks. It was fast paced, never a moment that lacked wit or heart, but at the same time showed huge advancements in character. Hart of Dixie is current up for a People’s Choice Award, which it hugely deserves over the competition.

Favorite Parts:

I seriously want to relocate to a small town in the south. Between the Christmas pageants, the pancake breakfasts on Sunday mornings, and the southern boys; everything just seems better in Bluebell.

I loved the flashbacks. I’m a sucker for a good flashback episode, and Lemon was both heartbreaking and adorable. When she first confronts Lavon with this gem: “My problem, Mr. Mayor, is that a raccoon broke into the manger in the middle of the night and ate the arm off the baby Jesus! As if he didn’t suffer enough.” had me rewinding my DVR several times.

I loved that Magnolia’s talent was a monologue from Gone With the Wind How much more southern can you get?
