The Amazing Race “We Are Charlie Chaplin” Review

The teams started out this week’s installment of The Amazing Race in Brussels, and had to immediately change into costumes to find their next clue. I was glad they at least did something before getting their first clue. Usually they just tear the clue at the pit stop and find out where they’re going next, so it was fun to see everybody dress up like Johnson and Johnson and led to the episode titular line from Tommy as he confidently (but incorrectly) proclaims “We Are Charlie Chaplin”! Not even close, Tommy.

After flying to Panama and having a fun tattoo challenge with a local tribe, the teams are sent to the road block where they are told to channel their inner Philippe Petit (“Man on Wire” reference. Netflix it!) and they had to walk between two 35 story buildings. It was interesting to see the clue specifically force certain team members to perform this challenge. I always feel like one of the members is doing more challenges than the other, so I was glad this was being enforced.

After this challenge, we move right into the detour where the teams choose between making sandals and transporting fish. I sometimes wonder what the rules of detours are, as I really thought Amani and Marcus would have been better off sticking with the shoe challenge.

Anyway, none of that mattered as the big story of the episode was Andy and Tommy somehow losing it at the last second due to a bad clue. This was absolutely heartbreaking for me as I’ve been a big fan of theirs this whole season, and they’ve been completely dominating so far, so it was more than a little sad to see them go. I guess this might just sound a bit bitter, but I thought it was a little lame that three of the four cab drivers just happened to be friends and all told each other where to go. Ernie and Cindy were going to the Balboa clue, and so were Amani and Marcus, only to be saved by this overly-talkative driver. I guess it’s difficult to disagree with them going home, as they did make a big mistake in the second most important leg of the race, but I really don’t think that any of the remaining teams are the best racers. They just had the friendliest cab drivers.

Random Thoughts:

- I can’t believe that nobody knew who Tintin was! I know the comic isn’t that big over here in the states, but you’d think you’d at least come across that information somewhere. Did anybody watching know who it was?

- One of my favorite parts of the episode was Cindy exclaiming “Holy balls!” upon looking out over the side of the building. Totally out of character for her, but totally hilarious.

- At least Andy and Tommy got free Mustangs…
