PRIME SUSPECT “Gone to Pieces” Review

As the episode began, I wanted to get mad at Regis Duffy all over again as he tried to pawn his unsolvable hit and run off on Jane. However, by the conclusion of the episode, I believe that he genuinely wanted the time to work on the boat for Jackie so I gave him a pass. I love the Duffy way of being kind – a boat for Jackie, a doll for Rosie and a canned spiral ham for Sunday dinner. Regis, you melt my heart in your own bristly, awkwardly sweet way. It was painful to watch Sweeney tell Duffy that he had to let his former partner’s family go but it was obviously for the best. Duffy is really due for a break in his personal life.

Aside from Regis, Valerio is easily my favorite partner pairing for Jane. They balance each other pretty well. I like that he is generally laid back but became incensed when a bike rider nearly ran him over – totally understandable. He also has an enjoyable no nonsense rapport with suspects that I enjoy watching.

Tonight’s Prime Suspect featured a great cameo by Jay Mohr. It was bittersweet to see his turn as the district attorney. I was hoping that his appearance would grow into a regular role, only to be reminded that the show has been unofficially cancelled by NBC. Bummer.

I think that tonight’s episode may truly mark a permanent shift in the Jane/Duffy working relationship. I was not surprised that Jane would not burden her boyfriend with seemingly endless tales about how horribly the guys treat her at work but it was definitely shocking to Duffy. I think she gained a bit of respect in his eyes because up until now, he’s viewed her as someone who uses men – a damsel in distress. Discovering that she did not go home and cry to her boyfriend about Duffy’s mistreatment of her at work should have shown him that she’s as tough as she acts. Likewise, Duffy opened Jane’s eyes to the significance of her presence in Owen’s life. Like Jane, I was really pleased that Owen was so impressed by her making easy work of King Dickens’ temper tantrum.

I loved that Augie immediately recognized King Dickens and his wife. As a porn actress, the wife was understandable but recognizing King Dickens means that Augie is truly a porn connoisseur. Equally funny was the hug Auggie gave Jane after he was charged with the task of watching porn all night. It was not a huge shocker that Duffy’s hit and run eventually tied to the apartment shooting victim. Although not an unexpected development, the manner in which their deaths tied together was well developed and entertaining.

A few random observations and favorite moments from Prime Suspect:

Did the Internet really kill art?

“Does he have his britches on? I like to brace myself for full-on male nudity.” This line was particularly funny after watching It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. What are the odds that both shows would touch upon full frontal male nudity?!?

Self-determining porn. Interesting.

What did you think of Prime Suspect? Do you think Jane and Regis have finally turned a corner?

I liked last night’s episode a lot for all the reasons listed above plus the cinematography as well as the strong acting. I hope NBC will give Prime Suspect a little longer to find its audience because it has the makings of a great show.

Agreed. this is such quality show that is not getting the recognition it deserves. I would be really sad to see it go.

Hear hear.  I’m effing pissed that NBC is basically calling it a wash when it is pretty much the only decent drama they have.  I’m going to miss this so much.

At least ratings are supposed to be up a little, to a 1.3.  That’s a good thing.  Kinda.  NBC as a whole isn’t doing too well.

If they’re only looking at traditional ratings they’re being v. idiotic – no one I know even owns a tv anymore, we all get things from hulu or other spots online

I completely agree with all of your comments.  This is an amazing show and it is
certainly as good as or better than the other shows NBC is currently offering.
I also agree that the ratings system is still ages behind all of the new avenues
available for television viewing and as a result, great shows suffer and get
cancelled due in part to these skewed numbers.  I think what frustrates me most,
is that I don’t believe for one second that NBC has anything better to put in
Prime Suspect’s place.  It really boggles my mind that Prime Suspect is shut
down, Community is facing a midseason pull and crap like Whitney is still on the
air (no offense to those who like Whitney).
