With the Holidays right around the corner (really? Where did the year go?) and SUPERNATURAL coming up on winter hiatus (just shoot me) I thought it would be nice to put together a piece about us. The fans, the fandom, the wonderful people that make up this Supernatural family. I want to talk about the things that we’ve accomplished as a group – and what an amazing fandom we truly are.
By now we all know that Jared Padalecki and wife Genevieve are expecting their first baby. When Jared announced the news on Twitter the fandom blew up with questions about sending the happy couple gifts. First of all, how sweet are we? Second of all, instead of accepting the gifts, Jared and Genevieve asked that donations be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. Within a day the initial goal of $5,000 had been reached (a DAY. ONE. DAY) which caused those running the fundraiser to up the goal amount.
It now sits at $20,000 and the fandom has raised over $15K for St. Jude’s. The baby isn’t even expected to make an appearance until February, so I’m pretty sure that goal will be hit. If you want to donate you can do so here.
Then it was Jensen’s turn. While Jensen doesn’t have a twitter account to promote his causes, thanks to cast and crew, the fandom found out about Team Levi. Created to support Jensen’s nephew with Down Syndrome, Team Levi was a way for the fans to, once again, become involved and raise money for an amazing cause. If you look at Levi’s donor page over $18,000 was raised in his name for the down syndrome walk.
We are truly an amazing and selfless fandom.
Now that we’ve talked about the selfless things the fandom has done, let’s look at the rallies we’ve put together for Supernatural itself. We managed to get our show nominated for a People’s Choice Award! Right there is no small feat – we beat out tons of other shows and now are voting our butts off to see that Supernatural pulls out a win.
Judging by past contests that required fan votes, I’d say we have a pretty decent chance of winning! We are not a fandom that accepts defeat easily, and judging by my twitter feed, we will not rest until victory is ours! Vote here!
When Misha Collins tells his minons to do something, we all rally together and do it – no questions asked. This includes breaking a world record for the largest scavenger hunt in the world. The Greatest International Scavenger Hunt the World has Ever Seen just recently wrapped (we’re still waiting on the point totals) and it looks like we broke a world record for most teams competing in a scavenger hunt!
If I’m not mistaken, the number of people that signed up allowed GISHWHES to have over 500 teams with equal number of team members, which gives us a place in the Guinness Book of World Records. The items found on the (really) long list for the hunt included some pretty wacky things (make a pair of earrings out of human molars and take a picture of an 80 year old woman wearing them), but there were fans that stepped up to the plate and really brought their skills!
My team never ceased to amaze me with everything that they managed to accomplish. I can’t speak for the rest of the teams (everything is top secret! We all want that coveted trip to Rome!), but it was a lot of fun to meet other fans and connect with those that I wouldn’t normally get a chance to meet.
Those are just four examples of how we as a fandom join together to make Supernatural one of the most devoted fan bases ever. I’m proud to say that I’m part of this crazy and wacky family. In honor of the holidays and since Supernatural will be on winter hiatus, Supernatural Thursday will also be taking a brief break. We’ll be back before new episodes start airing in 2012.
I hope you all have a wonderful holiday and continue to be the crazy and devoted fans that you are.
