HOT IN CLEVELAND Season 2 DVD Review

hot in cleveland s2 dvd

TV Land has released HOT IN CLEVELAND Season 2 on DVD. The DVD contains all 22 episodes of this hilarious sitcom, as well as some bonus features. The DVD release coincides with the premiere of the third season. It is hard to believe this series is now on its third year. I remember when it first came out and how much praise it got, not only for bringing Betty White back to the small screen, but also bringing the comic forces of Wendie Malick, Jane Leeves and Valerie Bertinelli to one show.

Hot in Cleveland revolves around three somewhat washed up Los Angeles transplants, a beautician, a writer, and a soap opera star whose plane crashes in Cleveland, Ohio. Rather than catching another plane to their destination, the women decide to start anew in the town and lease a home that comes complete with an older Polish caretaker, Betty White. The first season found the girls forming a bond and getting to know each other including discovering some interesting back stories, especially in the case of Betty’s character, Elka.

Hot in Cleveland‘s second season picks up right where the first season left off. Elka is still in jail. The season continued with the same brand of humor including prison scenes with Susan Lucci, a guest appearance by Mary Tyler Moore, as well as Huey Lewis, Amy Sedaris and even Jon Lovitz. From dating to engagements to plain old man drama, Hot in Cleveland’s second season covered it all. The season also included a visit from a close family member of one of the women, long since dead.

In addition to the episodes, which really are enough, the DVD also contained what appeared to be numerous bonus features. They include:

The First Episode of TV Land’s Newest Sitcom The Exes – starring Kristin Johnson as an attorney, Newman from Seinfeld,

Hot in Cleveland Auto-Tuned – the cast has auto tune microphones and say random things into them (about 45 seconds)

Extended Betty “Bendover” Blooper – watch Betty try to deliver the line “I signed up after my bender was over. That’s my screen name, BenderOver” (just over a minute and a half)

What’s Your Favorite Place on Set? – each main cast member talks about their favorite place. None are alike, but they do agree on one place. (just over one minute)

What Would you Take Home From the Set – eacah cast member talks about the thing or things they would most like to take home from the set (about 45 seconds)

Betty White Visits the Cleveland Zoo – a zookeeper talks about Betty’s visit to the zoo although she is never shown there (just over one minute)

The Ladies at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame – we learn that producer/writer, Rachel Sweet, was a rocker in the 80s and is in the Hall of Fame (38 seconds)

The Cast on Their First Concerts – the cast talks about their very first concert (about one minute and a half)

Women Who Rock – exhibit at the Hall of Fame; employee likens it to what the women do on the show (just over 30 seconds)

Batlle of the Bands – guy from Hall of Fame speculates on what kind of band the characters would be in (just over 30 seconds)

Birthdates Revealed – starts off talking about celebrating birthdays but then goes on to another subject entirely. Not sure what it is really about (just over one minute)

The Scoop on John Mahoney – Jane Leeves talk about his time on Frasier and they all talk about how much they love him and how to get him back (just under one minute and a half)

Accents – discussion about how scene where they all do different accents was never done completely without one of them laughing; (just under two minutes)

Although the bonus features sounded interesting and there were many of them, they were not at all interesting and were all very short. When most of a DVDs features are under a minute, it is not a good sign. There was also only one blooper and I would have expected more from a comedy.

I would recommend purchasing the Hot in Cleveland Season 2 DVD, but only for the genius that is the show and certainly not for any bonus or special features. So check it out and tell me what you think!
