GLEE “I Kissed a Girl” Review

GLEE “I Kissed a Girl” Season 3 Episode 7 – Finally! Something actually happened on Glee that wasn’t just a re-telling of something that happened before! I could kiss “I Kissed a Girl” just for that.

Election day arrived, not only for the seniors of McKinley High, but the voters of Ohio. Long story short, Kurt’s chances of winning would have been better if Rachel hadn’t stuffed the ballot box in his favor, but at one Hummell was victorious when Burt beat out Sue for a shot at Washington DC. Looks like the arts in Ohio are safe…at least until Sue comes up with another scheme to destroy them. Which will probably be next week.

Oh, Rachel. The girl tries so hard to mold the world into the musical that I believe is constantly playing in her mind, but life (even the crazy life of Glee-land) is not a Broadway show (trust me, I learned this painful lesson years ago) and cheating gets you expelled and banned from competition, even if you had a really, really, really good (and only partially self-serving) reason for doing it.

I was hard on Santana last week, but to be fair, the girl was a raging…well…you know. The debate about whether or not Finn outed her will probably keep pop culture historians busy for centuries, but the fact is, she assaulted him and unless he was kicking a puppy or something, there really isn’t an excuse for violence. However, this week it was easier to be on her side. She didn’t make it easy on him, but eventually Finn’s goofy optimism cracked her shell and she was able to stand up and be herself, even to her parents.

Unfortunately, when she came out to her abuelita, she wasn’t met with anything resembling the love and acceptance she got from the Glee club. What she got was kicked out of her grandmother’s house. It was a painful, heart-wrenching scene made even more so by the knowledge that this is one of the areas in which Glee-land mirrors the world we live in; this sort of thing happens all the time and if even one person out there sees this scene and realizes how wrong it is to hate someone for being who they are, then Glee can be as ridiculous as it wants…it will have done the world a service.

Love was in the air this week. Puck finally landed Shelby (hello, train wreck!), and he could have landed Quinn (again without protection), but he had one of his not-so rare moments of good guy behavior when he refused and told her instead that she didn’t need a baby or a man to make something of her life. It seems like maybe he got through to her, but it remains to be seen whether she’s completely jumped off the crazy train.

Poor Coach Bieste. Not only is she going to die of protein poisoning, but she had her heart broken by Evil Sue who stole her football recruiter boyfriend in a desperate bid for votes. It’s no wonder that they’ve put Emma and Bieste in so many scenes this season; they’re both damaged, but not beyond repair. I get the feeling that if they had been exposed to some Glee Club-esque acceptance when they were in high school, things would have turned out differently for them both.

So, Glee made up for last week’s episode this week, and I’m glad for it. This used to be one of my very favorite shows; I don’t want to see it slip to the list of shows I dread seeing on my DVR.

After last week, this ep redeemed the show for me, particularly where Santana was concerned; I told myself that if I wanted to go upside her head with a meat cleaver, this would be my last ep, but it didn’t come to that.

It was corny in some spots (Finn’s “saving Santana from herself”, the serenading from Klaine and Finn) but certainly well-intentioned.  The songs all fit nicely into the plot, particularly the closing rendition of “Constant Craving”.  I loved Finn’s rendition of “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”–which I understand is a cover by another singer–and it was cool to see Bieste’s character get a song of her own.

As for that meat cleaver, Abuelita gets that honor, but if that seems too cruel, perhaps a good swift kick off that cross is kinder.
