GOSSIP GIRL “Rhodes to Perdition” Season 5 Episode 9 – The Rhodes family con took center stage in “Rhodes to Perdition,” this week’s Gossip Girl, with Charlie/Ivy almost losing half a million dollar’s worth of her trust fund just to keep ex-boyfriend Max from spilling her secret. It’s good that this storyline seemed to reach a plateau for the time being; the show really needs to get back to what it does best: sex, scandal and sex.
Now that Diana is gone, the Spectator has become a respectable news medium, thanks to Honest Nate and his policy of the whole truth and nothing but. Even when handed a juicy story about his own family, he takes the high road and simply reports the facts. His grandpa might respect him, but he’s not going to keep the magazine afloat by being nice forever.
Meanwhile, Blair is following Chuck again, but this time it’s to figure out how he became a nice guy so that she can turn Louis into a nice guy again. Um…sure, Blair. Whatever you tell yourself to sleep at night is fine, but any idiot can see through your rather flimsy excuse to be near Chuck. And the fact that you were upset that he discarded that ring…we all know you’re not over him, no matter how much you protest otherwise. Will you have to make it all the way down the aisle before you realize you’re walking to the wrong guy?
On the other side of town, Dan is obssessing over the bashing his book is receiving online. Every writer knows to take negative reviews in stride; heck, I got blasted a few weeks ago for my Glee review. It’s just part of being a writer. But Dan can’t stand hearing bad things about his writing, so he creates an online handle to fight back, only to find out that the bad reviews were from his agent who was trying to drum up interest in the book. Was Dan always this neurotic and annoying?
I have to give a nod to the night’s disco theme; Serena in particular looked ready for a night at Studio 54. I just wish the party hadn’t been limited to the Rhodes family. I would have loved to have seen Chuck in a polyester leisure suit.
This episode of Gossip Girl was nothing to write home about, but it did tie up the Charlie plot, while still leaving an opening for more drama later. She’s safe for now, but there’s still someone in town who knows her secret, and now she’s pissed him off. Probably not the greatest plan in the world.
