THE AMAZING RACE “Release the Brake” Review

THE AMAZING RACE "Release the Brake" Review

THE AMAZING RACE “Release the Brake!” Season 19 Episode 10 – The second half of last week’s leg was continued on “Release the Brake!”, one of the most exciting episodes of The Amazing Race on the season thus far. One of my biggest concerns after seeing that the scenes from last week featured zero shots of Bill and Cathi, I thought that they would be eliminated after arriving last to the pit stop. I guess that was a fake out from CBS, as they were given the next clue like everybody else and told to keep on racin’!

The road block at the Ford proving ground was pretty awesome. It was so much fun watching all the teams have such a good time, that I can forgive all the blatant product placement (“Driving the Ford Mustang is so amazing!”) I was a bit disappointed with Andy and Tommy for their decision making process here, though. I get that Andy wanted to be a nice guy and give Tommy a fun challenge after he had such a hard time last week, but that makes zero sense. Andy obviously had a passion for driving, and would have probably been a stronger driver, but he wanted to give it to Tommy just because he sucked at the last challenge? It’s a game, get over it. The team member that’s best for the challenge should perform it, period. Also, Tommy rubbing in Andy’s face about how cool the challenge was was a bit of a jerk move.

Either way, they get past the challenge with everybody else and proceed to the detour. It was good seeing how completely different the challenges were, while being relatively equal in difficulty. There’s lots of detours where you can see that one of the challenges is clearly the easier choice, but this wasn’t the case here. Very well balanced.

The rest of the race played out relatively predictably. Andy and Tommy came in first yet again, and actually won brand new Mustangs! Even though we got even more Ford promotion, you can’t help but feel pretty pumped for them upon receiving this news! On the other end of the spectrum, Bill and Cathi were finally eliminated from the race. I’m not saying they haven’t done very well on this race, but it feels like they’ve been on borrowed time for several legs now. We’ve got four strong teams going into the semifinals next week, with Andy and Tommy looking like the favorites at this point! Can’t wait to see what happens!

Random Thoughts:

- I loved how bored the professional driver looked while driving with Ernie. Quite a big difference from the driver with Jeremy.

- The first and only thing I think of when I think of Belgium is waffles. Did they really have to fulfill that stereotype?

- If Marcus uses one more football analogy, I’m gonna lose it.

I think Andy’s reasoning for giving the car challenge to Tommy was that he needs to be saved for the more “brainy” challenges, now that they know Tommy isn’t so great at them.  It seems like there’s some rule for partners to do an equal number of challenges in the race?

I kind of wished there had been an all girl team still in the race so we could at least see ONE woman do that challenge.  That task looked amazing.  And Jeremy sure lucked out– his guy was fun, friendly and explained the directions very clearly.  First episode I actually remembered the Jeremy/Sandy team.. I’m wondering if they’re going to be a dark horse going into the final…

which makes Marcus and Armani even more of a long shot.  I’m still pulling for them– After the olympians, they’re the team I enjoy watching most.  And it’s probably because I don’t listen THAT closely when I watch TAR but the football references aren’t annoying me yet.
