NCIS “Sins of the Father” Review

NCIS Sins of the Father Season 9 Episode 10

NCIS “Sins of the Father” Season 9 Episode 10 – I have to admit that I had a bit of a private eye roll when I saw that Daddy DiNozzo was apparently going to be involved in a murder in this episode. I mean haven’t we already done that with everyone from McGee’s grandmother to Gibbs’ mother-in-law?

But I gotta say, they really nailed this one. I was pleased to see that they didn’t play this whole story for laughs but instead used it as a way to once again highlight the problems Tony has with his father. Tony has been telling wild stories about his dad since season one and I think all of us thought he was kidding. But tonight we saw that he may have actually been holding back on us. The more we learned, the more I had to wonder how long Tony has had to be the adult in the relationship with his father. It seems like his dad has been running around playing the fool ever since Tony’s mom died, leaving junior either cleaning up his messes or just plain neglected.

I never thought we could top the scene between Gibbs and Daddy DiNozzo in ‘Flesh and Blood’ but tonight they proved me wrong. That scene in Gibbs’ kitchen where he tells Senior that all Tony ever wanted was a dad? Yeah, that killed me. As did the final scene with the three of them together at Gibbs’ house, prepping for Thanksgiving.

Overall this episode surprised me and I’m happy it did. I love it when shows exceed my expectations and that’s exactly what this one did tonight.

My favorite bits…..

You know, having this scene in the preview last week made the build-up more annoying than exciting. Just sayin’. LOL.

Tony trying to claim that it was “no big deal” that his dad hadn’t shown up to dinner the previous night.

Gibbs tossing Tony behind the police tape. Whoa!

I’m with Ducky, this is SO gonna be a sticky one.

Gibbs giving Tony the cold cases to keep him busy. I’ll be curious to see how long that works.

Ducky telling Abby that Tony was understating the stories about his dad. Yeah, I’m starting to believe that.

Tony starting out with cake and ending with blackmail to get in to see his dad. A Leroy Jethro Gibbs Halloween costume? That took guts.

“Are you done yet?”
“Eat your cake!”

Vance suggesting Tony take a few personal days. Yeah right, cuz that’s gonna happen.

Uh oh..things are not looking good for Daddy DiNozzo.

That line about Tony’s dad dating women younger than Tony all the way in the 80′s? I’m starting to think that may not be so far-fetched.

Tony giving Gibbs puppy-dog eyes to keep his dad from going to that creepy looking jail.

“If he gives you any trouble, shoot him.”
“He’s kidding..I think.”

Tony and McGee fighting over that file was absolutely classic. LOL!

Loving the way things went serious between McGee and Tony in an instant. Tony begging McGee for any info he could give, followed by this line: “Tony you have to realize we are working every angle possible but we are one very special agent short.”

Wait. Daddy DiNozzo is spending the night where?? Oh boy, this just keeps getting better and better.

Gibbs admitting to Daddy DiNozzo that he was letting him stay there for Tony’s sake..and that he deserved better. Wow.

“You don’t get it. Tony never wanted your money, he wants a father.” *Moki has now melted onto the floor*

Tony immediately guessing that his father was in autopsy because Gibbs shot him. It’s not that far off the mark, really.

I love that Abby didn’t fall for any of Tony’s tricks.

Hm, interesting. I thought they established Tony’s year of birth as 1972 in previous episodes.

Oh no, definitely not looking good for Daddy DiNozzo.

Abby figuring out that Daddy DiNozzo didn’t do it..along with some help from Tony.

Gibbs and Vance agreeing to ignore Tony’s defiance of their direct orders.

Aw! I had a funny feeling that Tony’s dad was in the kitchen listening to everything he was saying.

Gibbs offering Tony an apron. Ha!

Okay who else is DYING to see that Thanksgiving dinner with Tony, Gibbs and Daddy DiNozzo?

Absolutely loved it! I had to watch the “he wants a father” scene several times!

I haven’t had the chance yet, but I can’t wait to re-watch this whole ep again and again…..and again. ;o)

Gibbs calling Senior out for neglecting his paternal duties was the highlight for me. However, I would have liked to see more of the other cast members–they seemed to fade into the background.

I haven’t seen earlier eps with DiNozzo Senior, but going on what backstory I heard last night, it seems that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.  Junior seems to have inherited Senior’s cavalier / class clown / Peter Pan / overgrown frat rat thing–surprising considering that Junior seems to detest that kinda behavior in his father.

It’s true that Tony has inherited that behavior from his father but in my opinion he uses it as a shield to hide who he really is. Gibbs said as much the first time we met DiNozzo, Sr.

DiNozzo Sr, on the other hand, doesn’t seem to have anything else underneath. Though I suppose his behavior could be hiding a man still hurting from losing the love of his life (Tony’s mother). Maybe that will come out in an episode someday.

Ok, so finally watched this episode. What struck me is that Gibbs is continuing on his mission of helping all his team members heal in some way this season.

Hm, that’s true. It does seem to be an ongoing theme this year.
