BOARDWALK EMPIRE “Battle of the Century” Season 2, Episode 9 – I await each new episode of Boardwalk Empire with bated breath and always have a ton of questions going into each episode.
Will Dunn Purnsley prove to be friend or foe to Chalky White?
When this season of Boardwalk Empire began, the black community was used as a pawn in the battle between Nucky and Jimmy/The Commodore. Tonight, the warring sides are relying upon the black community again, however this time it is the result of Nucky’s provocation. I’m not a fan of it either way. Through the assistance of Dunn Purnsley, Chalky organizes a strike at the Ritz and creates a problem for the newly minted prince of Atlantic City. I was surprised to see Dunn Purnsley again after he was handily beaten by Chalky’s associates in jail. In fact, I was hoping to never see the man again because I like Chalky, want to see him live a few seasons and was fearful of the ax that Purnsley had to grind.
Purnsley, now employed at the Ritz, is still doing what he does best – stirring up shit. He and Chalky are now “sweet as crackerjack.” Of the three troubled “bosses” on this show, Chalky appears to have the best handle on his situation. I’m cautiously optimistic about these two. Purnsley proved to be a great motivator of men – it was appalling to think that the some members of the kitchen staff had not received a raise in over FIVE years! STRIKE!
Why on earth would Nucky think McGarrigle would be of any use to him?
I was surprised to see Nucky turn to John McGarrigle for assistance. McGarrigle was unquestionably an asshole when Nucky first met him so I’m not sure why he thought he was a potential ally. Afterall, McGarrigle dumped Owen on Nucky so that he could collect a check while doing Sinn Fein’s bidding – the man is clearly into his own interests and there has been no indication of reciprocity thus far. Admittedly, Nucky’s proposition of guns in exchange for Irish whiskey is a pretty darn good deal. It looks like I was not the only person to see the value in the deal.
Is Emily going to survive her sudden illness?
Does Atlantic City have only a single doctor? Who asks a child “are you trying” when she is clearly unable to move the lower half of her body? Margaret has already suffered so much – a miscarriage on her trip to the States, an abusive jerk of a husband, an unfaithful lover, a family that wants nothing to do with her and now a child with polio. Really, what more can one woman take?
What will be the ramifications of Jimmy tossing Doyle over a balcony? Will he finally pay Horvitz the $5,000 he owes him?
Short answer – hell no. Mickey Doyle annoys me as much as the next person but it saddened me to see him at the Remus meeting with a neck brace and bruised face. How much abuse must this man take in order to be an Atlantic City bootlegger? I’m all for advancing story lines but I would like to know how Jimmy patched things up with him. Jimmy’s botched attempt to have Horvitz killed and his mistreatment of Doyle will surely come back to haunt him. Unfortunately, it will probably cost someone other than Jimmy their life. Please don’t let it be Harrow! I nominate Gillian Darmody.
Random Thoughts and observations…
> Katie annoys me to no end. I hope she quits out of fear of catching polio. fingers crossed
> I almost passed out at the sight of the needle used to perform Emily’s spinal tap.
> Sleeping with colleagues is never a good idea.
> Who chose the clock for target practice? Indeed, the Tommy Gun gave it a proper thrashing.
> Before the conclusion of Boardwalk Empire as a series, I want Richard Harrow to have the peace and love of which his scrapbooks are made.
> I did not like Hans Schroeder while he was alive and I do not like him now that he is dead. Enough already!
> I LOVED Jimmy’s facial expression upon hearing “Remus” referring to himself in the third person. With the seemingly endless number of characters currently on the canvas, Remus is one I could do without. Here’s hoping that Jimmy covers all of Remus’s expenses during his stay. I could not bear to hear Remus berate Jimmy for not covering Remus’s expenses. Ugh!
Until next week! Share your thoughts below about Boardwalk Empire. Will Margaret ever catch a break? Do you trust the two women who came on to Jimmy? I sure didn’t! Is it just me or does this show have the worst assassins? First the botched attempt on Nucky’s life and now Horvitz.
