5 Overrated TV Shows

5 Overrated TV Shows

Last week, I presented you with 5 shows that I believe were underrated. In addition to those five, I mentioned how difficult it is to be considered underrated in the Hype Machine Age of television. Every show on the major networks is covered, rehashed, discussed, and debated to the point that it makes it nearly impossible to fly under the radar.

On the flip side of that coin, all of that discussion and attention can easily lead to a show becoming overrated. To be clear, being overrated doesn’t mean that the show is bad. As a matter of fact, I enjoy almost all of the shows I am going to present to you today. A television show can become overrated because people want to take a good show and make into something transcendent. In this world where everyone is constantly looking for the Next Big Thing, it’s easy for people to get swept up in a show and make it bigger than it deserves, or even wants, to be. The 5 shows on this list are all good, but none of them are THAT good. Therefore, we have to consider them overrated.

TRUE BLOOD

TRUE BLOOD Burning Down the House Season 4 Episode 10

They are not overrated because of their absurd plot lines. Even I understand you have to suspend disbelief for this show. That being said, a lot of the acting is either painful to watch or registers a solid 6 on the unintentional comedy scale. I can’t totally blame the actors because the writers don’t give them much to work with from a dialogue standpoint. That being said, I assume I would probably act a little weird if I lived in dangerous, sex-crazed Bon Temps, Louisiana.

THE WALKING DEAD

Seems like a lot of people are hopping aboard The Walking Dead is Overrated Train. Sorry, interweb people, I have a lifetime pass. Again, I enjoy watching this show. I love the violence, it’s visually a really impressive show. That being said, it seems like the writers can’t be bothered to watch their own show. Zombie “rules” are established, and then quickly dismissed when it serves their story. The people on the show do some of the most nonsensical things you can imagine. No wonder so many of them die. The other big issue with The Walking Dead? They completely botched the lead. Andrew Lincoln isn’t terrible, but he’s not good either. A lot of the other actors are decent to effective, but the show hinges a lot on Lincoln. He can’t take them to the places they are asking him to go. It’s a shame. This show had maybe the greatest pilot ever, but couldn’t live up to the lofty standard. I will always associate this show with the phrase “What if.”

PARKS AND RECREATION

PARKS AND RECREATION "I'm Leslie Knope" Season 4 Premiere (4)

In reality, I could have put any one of the cult comedies on NBC. The problem is not that Parks and Recreation isn’t funny (it is quite funny at times), but that its defenders are so passionate and adamant that it is a great show that it carries this mythology with people who haven’t seen it. Trust me, dear readers, you aren’t missing the second coming of Seinfeld here. It’s fine for what it is, and its defenders should just let it be.

BURN NOTICE

Burn Notice is the flagship for USA’s lineup of Easily Digestible Dramas. It’s light, fun, and features some quality action sequences. It provides exactly what it sets out to provide. Unfortunately, USA tries to package it a lot as a heavy drama filled with great acting performances. I am as much of a Jeffrey Donovan defender as anybody, but even I don’t think he’s Emmy quality material. The show is sharp, witty, and features lots of shots of attractive people wearing bathing suits. Shouldn’t that be enough?

TWO AND A HALF MEN

This is the only show on this list that I don’t like. Whether anyone wants to admit or not, we were in far better hands with everyone’s favorite goddess collector and narcotics connoisseur. While it hasn’t led to a ratings decline just yet, it’s coming soon. Kutcher is ill-suited for any role that doesn’t involve him playing himself pulling pranks on celebrities. I will never understand the massive amounts of love this show gets. It doesn’t break any ground and has a laugh track. If this show ran on NBC, it would have been canceled within 8 episodes. Alas, it shall live on forever in syndication.

Now it’s your turn. Do you think these shows are overrated? What are some other shows that you believe are overrated? Remember, just because a show is good, doesn’t mean that it’s properly rated. Let’s talk it out in the comments or on Twitter.

Oh, am I sad to see The Walking Dead on this list! While I understand there a holes in the show, that can be said about anything. There isn’t a better horror show on television currently; and while the hype is massive around The Walking Dead, it’s deserved.

If I may ask since I don’t really remember – what are the established “zombie rules” that were broken that you’re referring to?

    • Anonymous

I will try to quickly summarize my thoughts.  I have written close to a billion words on the topic for my blog.

      1. Zombies can apparently no longer smell.  You’re fine if you hide under a car.

      2. Zombies are no longer attracted to light.  Herschel can have his lights on 24/7 without worry.

      3. Nobody is worried about getting zombie guts on them anymore.  Apparently new information has arisen.

These three don’t even begin to touch on the many preposterous decisions made by this group of people.

The fact that it is the best horror show on television really isn’t saying much.  Who’s the competition?

All that being said, I will watch every single episode this show ever makes.  Not sure what that says about me.

I understand the scent issue. The episode in the first season when they cover themselves in zombie jargon to cover their living scent is still something that sticks with me. However, they covered themselves because zombies DID smell like death and decay, while the living don’t. It’s stated that the living don’t smell like anything, so it stands to reason that if a human isn’t in the zombie’s view, that they wouldn’t even know fresh meat was around. The reason Rick and Glenn hid themselves in the first season was because they were purposely walking into a group of Walkers.

The light thing I have no argument for and would actually like to add a few things about the Herschel estate. Why haven’t the Walkers attacked yet? They have cattle all over and zombies will obviously eat cattle (as evidenced by the demise of Rick’s horse). I’ve chalked this up to that the Greene farm is in a remote enough area and hasn’t attracted the Walkers yet. I do agree that this was some sloppy writing.

AMEN to the zombie guts. My thought EXACTLY when T-Dog sliced his arm open and Daryl just threw a zombie body on top of him to keep him out of sight from the Walkers. I was CONVINCED that he would turn in the next episode. Apparently it only matters if you get bitten. So I totally agree.

American Horror Story is another horror show currently on, and if we really want to go there (which I do NOT consider these horror, but realize some people do) Supernatural and The Vampire Diaries can also be added to that list. Personally, anything on the CW automatically goes into my “teen angst” folder (not that I don’t love it, SPN is my ultimate favorite, hence the weekly column), but they do have horror elements.

I am glad we can agree on the stupidity of Rick and the gang.

Your explanation about the scent makes sense, but why not just walk like a walker then?  If zombies can only see the fresh meat, then if I stammer around for a few steps then I should be fine.

As you can see, we could go on for days.

One final note: American Horror Story is legit, but I’m not fully caught up.  It’s not a great show by any stretch, but it is definitely a solid horror show.

One more thing: I agree that these characters are deeply stupid at times.

2 of my favorite shows are on there. Parks and Recreation is the best comedy on air. And Burn Notice it’s awesome. This article saddens me.
I’d love to find out what shows do you consider very good.

It’s important to remember that I actually like all of these shows save for Two and a Half Men.  Parks and Rec is a good show, but some of its defenders have all but created a religion devoted to Ron Swanson.  I think that may be a bit much.

To me, Burn Notice is entertaining fluff.  It should be known that I watch every week.  It’s not meant as an insult.

Shows I would describe as very good: Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Justified, Game of Thrones, Homeland, Modern Family, and maybe The Good Wife sneaks in there.

You can easily defend any of these five shows.  You could also accuse me of being a bit of a TV snob.  I’m fine with either.

I kind of agree with most of the stuff here (kind of), except for Parks and Recreation.
I know I sound like one of the ‘defenders’, but there’s a reason they exist. The show is good. like really, really good. I don’t know how many episodes you’ve seen, but go rewatch season 2 through to 4. it’s Like the best comedy on Tv, with some of the best characters. I mean, Ron Swanson is an ICON.

Yeah I didn’t like the first season at all…I don’t know why I continued watching season 2. People told me it was good. So I did. I watched s1-3 over a week, and I loved it. I had just finished watching all of Community and was depressed that was over. While P&R wasn’t as good for me, it did fill the little hole I had left from marathoning Community endlessly.

I see your point for a lot of these shows and I personally don’t watch
Two and a Half Men and gave up on Burn Notice last season because it was
    getting too repetitive for me.

True Blood – Well to be fair when the show first started it was getting some bad reviews and low ratings, but then it started to catch on and became a phenomenon. I don’t think it was overhyped at first, but I don’t think the show is as good as it was in season 1 now, so maybe it is overhyped now.
The Walking Dead – I personally was never one to hype up the series in season 1, mostly because I thought it was just ok. But I do have to say season 2 has definitely stepped up. That said is it the best show I have ever seen and would I recommend it to everyone to watch? As much as I enjoy it, probably not, so maybe in that sense it is overhyped as well.

Parks and Recreation – That is probably the only one that I will have to disagree with you about. I recently started watching and became obsessed. In fact I wish I had hear more of the hype for this show earlier because I cannot believe it took me so long to start watching. I have recommended the show to quite a few people and would continue to recommend it as one of the best comedies on TV. So I guess for me it’s not overhyped.

On the flip side of things, one of the shows that you consider great that I would say is overrated (as much as I like it) is Mad Men. Again, I enjoy it, but it’s not a show I would necessarily recommend.

But all this proves is like everything on TV, overhyped shows is just a matter of opinions. What is overhyped for me might be justified to others and vice versa. But it certainly make for great TV conversation.

So thanks TV Czar for sharing the shows that are overhyped to you :)

(Spitting out drink on computer screen): I had to stop myself from buying a plane ticket so you and I could throw down face to face over Mad Men.

Haha! Yeah, I’m sure a lot of people felt that way after reading that article of yours ;)

The Walking Dead and Parks and Recreation are two of my favorites. Parks and Recreation doesn’t get very good ratings, so I don’t think I’d classify it as overrated. I can’t get anybody I know to tune in because they’re so addicted to reality tv. I think the Walking Dead is underated since the main critisism I hear lately is that there isn’t enough zombies….really? However I agree with your other choices, especially True Blood which I couldn’t get through three episodes off. I expected more from the dude that created Six Feet Under.

  • snoooo

I love Andrew Lincoln on the show. I think he’s capable of more than we see, and when the story is right he’ll come alive. Think back to the first two episodes and what Lincoln was like, becaue he was phenomenal. I like Lincoln’s look and feel he embodies Rick quiet well. I don’t think they botched it, but that his character(not the actor) is less of a lead character on the show than we thought he’d be…this is less of the Rick and Gang and much more a strong ensemble show.

    • The TV Czar

Pure speculation, but what I think you have seen happen with the elevation of some of the other characters is a direct correlation of the audience response to them. People love Shane and Daryl, so they are getting some more run this season. Don’t worry, you will get your fair share of Rick since we have to deal with this baby daddy BS. Sigh.

  • David

i see people that say how awesome the pilot was and how the rest of the show was a let down. I’d agree with the first season but the second season blows the pilot out of the water. yeah, the zombie rules may be inconsistent but i don’t care. I think Parks abd Rec however is one of the most overrated series ever made, I can’t stand it.

  • Lithium

This list should have included “Glee” and “NCIS”.
