A couple weeks ago, my wonderful writing partner Kelly did an intriguing article about Castiel and how maybe he was the reason why Supernatural hadn’t felt like “old times” recently. Now I have to admit that when I first saw the title of her article, I got a little sad. It felt like someone had just given an extra tap to the mallet that had already driven a stake into my heart the moment Castiel died on screen. She kindly reassured me it wasn’t as bad as the title made it out to be and I’m happy to say she was right. It was actually quite fair and I even agreed with a few of her points.
For instance, I do at least partially agree that there were issues with Castiel and where his character ultimately ended up (and I’m not just talking about the God thing). But that being said; I don’t think that killing him and making him disappear was the solution. So I thought I’d take a look at the opposite point of view and talk about what Castiel brings to the show and why those of us who love him want him back.

Yes Castiel messed up. I’m not even going to try and deny it. But haven’t Sam and Dean messed up too? Cass was family (remember what Bobby said, family don’t end with blood) and you don’t drop family, even when they screw up royally. And while he did have a few minutes in the end where he apologized for what he did, that was just not enough for me – not after all that we’d been through with him all these years.

Even with my underlying sadness over Castiel’s death (I hate using that word to describe his current state) I am still totally loving this season and the way it’s getting back to just being about the boys. But like I said before, Cass is family and he can’t simply be dropped. How about if he comes back as someone we get to see every only on occasion? He could easily have a (non-angel) storyline where he stays in the background and only pops up everyone once in a while.

I understand those who think that the angel storyline maybe went a little too far. Sam and Dean having an all-powerful being at their beck and call who could snap his fingers and solve their problems did perhaps grow a bit old. But when I think about having Cass back, I don’t necessary mean he would have to be that guy again. In fact I’m personally falling in love with this idea in my head – Castiel coming back in the form that he was in at the end of season 5, a fallen angel devoid of power and struggling with his identity. How awesome would that be?

Alright you Sam girls, just calm down right now. Oh and all you brother lovers out there, too. Y’all should know by now how much I love Sam and heck, I think Sam could use a friend, too. And while I hope that maybe Sam finds a buddy of his own someday, the truth is that Dean already found his. This guy who lives an impossible life and does things that would make normal people run away screaming in terror – he managed to find a friend. For a little while he had someone besides Sam and besides his adoptive father Bobby to talk to. Is it so wrong that I want that for Dean again?

‘Nuff said.

Oh and just so I’m very clear here, when I talk about bringing Castiel back, I of course mean that I want him back in Misha’s meat suit. There is no one else who will ever be able to fill those shoes (and raincoat) the way he does and frankly if Cass came back but Misha didn’t, I would still feel like he was dead.
And here are some quotes from some awesome fans who answered the question I posed on Facebook. I’d like to give a special thanks to everyone who spoke up in defense of our beloved angel.
“What do you think Castiel adds to Supernatural and why do you want him to come back?”
In Castiel we trust – He loves mankind. He loves us and belives in us. In this cruel, cold and dark world he brought warmth, light and love. He brought smile to our lips so many times. At first, he was Dean’s angel, but by now everyone thinks of him as their own. Castiel is everybody’s angel now, and nobody wants to lose him! Please, let him to come back, ’cause our hearts left in his trench coat pocket!

Deborah B. - I was heartbroken when Castiel was killed off! He has become an integral part of “Supernatural”; the three Musketeers (Dean; Cas; Sam). Team Free Will! I love his gentleness; his caring toward humanity. I love the friendship between Dean and Cas; it’s special. Plus, the chemistry between Jensen and Misha is marvelous. The two are wonderful together! I so looked forward to seeing their interaction every week; seeing our special angel Cas interacting with unmistakeably his best friend Dean Winchester. {And it’s clear Cas is Dean’s best friend, too.} We need Cas back! The caring, gentle protector of Dean and humanity! The show simply is not the same without Cas! To have him killed off, simply to allow the arrival of the new totally dull Leviathan, was inexcusable!
Marci D. – Because until cas came to the show it was about two brothers fighting evil, but then Cas came and it became about a family coming together to make a difference in a fallen world. I think Cas adds a heart to the show that none of us knew was missing. It showed all of us that we do not have to be blood to be family. To learn to have faith in each other for a greater purpose. Well, thats how this Cas fan sees it anyway.
Dulce C. – He’s innocent, funny (unintentionally, which makes him a lot cuter!), loyal and shy/serious. These qualities make a great addition to the show. After Cas showed up, I cannot think of the Winchester team without Cas.
Shelley C. – He has come a huge part of the cast and the story lines are just not the same without him. We need our angel back to make the show complete
Mélinda P. – His ways to interact with people is often very funny (no personnal space, doesn’t understand why we lie, very shy with women, etc). He makes me laugh, smile and cry. He has to come back because even if i love the brothers, the show just hasn’t been the same without him. Every single episode, i wish that i’ll see him and i am always sad at the end because i didn’t. I understand that the writers wanted to bring back the show to the brothers but it’s too late now, we fell in love with Cas and just can’t forget him like that. And oh, i miss him sooooooooo much!
Megan F. – Cas and his social ineptitude tends to lighten darker situations. He makes the guys laugh and be incredibly uncomfortable with his little quirks and his inability to grasp human nature… especially when there are rear spanking pizza men involved. Lol. As he learns all of these new things and grows from being just a warrior of God to Winchester brother, Castiel just seems to bring out the humanity in the boys that sometimes disappears. Especially when it comes to Dean. That’s just how I see it any way =)
Amy H. – The Angel of Thursday, Castiel is one Angel who believes he can do the right thing, stand by it and makes decisions from the trust of the Winchester brothers.
Melissa C. – i miss Cas T^T its depressing now that he is gone right now. i miss watching him slowly learn about human nature and before he knew it he was beginning to feel emotion like us humans do. his lack of social skills are hilarious and they always make me laugh.
Dawn W. – Castiel needs to return simply because his story is not over. He promised Dean that he would set things right. Castiel has always kept his promises, even when Jimmy thought Cas hadn’t. He’s a well rounded and loved character who deserves a better ending than dissipating in a reservoir. It won’t be easy for him to make right the things that have gone awry but Supernatural isn’t about easy, is it? It’s about family and the rough patches that family encounters along the way. It’s an opportunity for another wonderful facet to be added to this beloved character.
Cecilia F. - Yeah we want castiel back no matter what it takes we all love and miss him on the show
Supernatural: Season 7 To Infinity & Beyond – Okay, the reason I want Cas back on the show, is that he became so much more than a character that was only going to be around for a couple of episodes. Misha Collins’ portrayal of Cas has been amazing to say the least. I know he made me fall in love with the character so much, I now feel a terrible ache when I watch Supernatural and he is not there. Dean, Sam and Bobby and what they have been through have made me love this show more than I thought I could ever love a tv show. But when a certain angel made an appearance in season 4, I instantly became a Cas girl. To me, the show is just not the same without him. *Mandy*
