SUPERNATURAL THURSDAYS: Why the Fans Want Castiel (and Misha Collins) Back

Supernatural - The Man Who Would Be King

A couple weeks ago, my wonderful writing partner Kelly did an intriguing article about Castiel and how maybe he was the reason why Supernatural hadn’t felt like “old times” recently. Now I have to admit that when I first saw the title of her article, I got a little sad. It felt like someone had just given an extra tap to the mallet that had already driven a stake into my heart the moment Castiel died on screen. She kindly reassured me it wasn’t as bad as the title made it out to be and I’m happy to say she was right. It was actually quite fair and I even agreed with a few of her points.

For instance, I do at least partially agree that there were issues with Castiel and where his character ultimately ended up (and I’m not just talking about the God thing). But that being said; I don’t think that killing him and making him disappear was the solution. So I thought I’d take a look at the opposite point of view and talk about what Castiel brings to the show and why those of us who love him want him back.

He needs more of a redemption than those last 5 minutes

SUPERNATURAL "The Man Who Knew Too Much"

Yes Castiel messed up. I’m not even going to try and deny it. But haven’t Sam and Dean messed up too? Cass was family (remember what Bobby said, family don’t end with blood) and you don’t drop family, even when they screw up royally. And while he did have a few minutes in the end where he apologized for what he did, that was just not enough for me – not after all that we’d been through with him all these years.

He doesn’t have to be in every episode

Supernatural "The Third Man" Review

Even with my underlying sadness over Castiel’s death (I hate using that word to describe his current state) I am still totally loving this season and the way it’s getting back to just being about the boys. But like I said before, Cass is family and he can’t simply be dropped. How about if he comes back as someone we get to see every only on occasion? He could easily have a (non-angel) storyline where he stays in the background and only pops up everyone once in a while.

He doesn’t have to be all-powerful again

castiel

I understand those who think that the angel storyline maybe went a little too far. Sam and Dean having an all-powerful being at their beck and call who could snap his fingers and solve their problems did perhaps grow a bit old. But when I think about having Cass back, I don’t necessary mean he would have to be that guy again. In fact I’m personally falling in love with this idea in my head – Castiel coming back in the form that he was in at the end of season 5, a fallen angel devoid of power and struggling with his identity. How awesome would that be?

Dean could use a friend besides Sam

Supernatural - Castiel and Dean

Alright you Sam girls, just calm down right now. Oh and all you brother lovers out there, too. Y’all should know by now how much I love Sam and heck, I think Sam could use a friend, too. And while I hope that maybe Sam finds a buddy of his own someday, the truth is that Dean already found his. This guy who lives an impossible life and does things that would make normal people run away screaming in terror – he managed to find a friend. For a little while he had someone besides Sam and besides his adoptive father Bobby to talk to. Is it so wrong that I want that for Dean again?

He can’t die a virgin

SUPERNATURAL (CW) Caged Heat

‘Nuff said.

Misha is just too damn good not to bring back on the show

Castiel - Dirty Hippie

Oh and just so I’m very clear here, when I talk about bringing Castiel back, I of course mean that I want him back in Misha’s meat suit. There is no one else who will ever be able to fill those shoes (and raincoat) the way he does and frankly if Cass came back but Misha didn’t, I would still feel like he was dead.

And here are some quotes from some awesome fans who answered the question I posed on Facebook. I’d like to give a special thanks to everyone who spoke up in defense of our beloved angel.

“What do you think Castiel adds to Supernatural and why do you want him to come back?”

In Castiel we trust – He loves mankind. He loves us and belives in us. In this cruel, cold and dark world he brought warmth, light and love. He brought smile to our lips so many times. At first, he was Dean’s angel, but by now everyone thinks of him as their own. Castiel is everybody’s angel now, and nobody wants to lose him! Please, let him to come back, ’cause our hearts left in his trench coat pocket! :( ((

Deborah B. - I was heartbroken when Castiel was killed off! He has become an integral part of “Supernatural”; the three Musketeers (Dean; Cas; Sam). Team Free Will! I love his gentleness; his caring toward humanity. I love the friendship between Dean and Cas; it’s special. Plus, the chemistry between Jensen and Misha is marvelous. The two are wonderful together! I so looked forward to seeing their interaction every week; seeing our special angel Cas interacting with unmistakeably his best friend Dean Winchester. {And it’s clear Cas is Dean’s best friend, too.} We need Cas back! The caring, gentle protector of Dean and humanity! The show simply is not the same without Cas! To have him killed off, simply to allow the arrival of the new totally dull Leviathan, was inexcusable!

Marci D. – Because until cas came to the show it was about two brothers fighting evil, but then Cas came and it became about a family coming together to make a difference in a fallen world. I think Cas adds a heart to the show that none of us knew was missing. It showed all of us that we do not have to be blood to be family. To learn to have faith in each other for a greater purpose. Well, thats how this Cas fan sees it anyway.

Dulce C. – He’s innocent, funny (unintentionally, which makes him a lot cuter!), loyal and shy/serious. These qualities make a great addition to the show. After Cas showed up, I cannot think of the Winchester team without Cas.

Shelley C. – He has come a huge part of the cast and the story lines are just not the same without him. We need our angel back to make the show complete

Mélinda P. – His ways to interact with people is often very funny (no personnal space, doesn’t understand why we lie, very shy with women, etc). He makes me laugh, smile and cry. He has to come back because even if i love the brothers, the show just hasn’t been the same without him. Every single episode, i wish that i’ll see him and i am always sad at the end because i didn’t. I understand that the writers wanted to bring back the show to the brothers but it’s too late now, we fell in love with Cas and just can’t forget him like that. And oh, i miss him sooooooooo much!

Megan F. – Cas and his social ineptitude tends to lighten darker situations. He makes the guys laugh and be incredibly uncomfortable with his little quirks and his inability to grasp human nature… especially when there are rear spanking pizza men involved. Lol. As he learns all of these new things and grows from being just a warrior of God to Winchester brother, Castiel just seems to bring out the humanity in the boys that sometimes disappears. Especially when it comes to Dean. That’s just how I see it any way =)

Amy H. – The Angel of Thursday, Castiel is one Angel who believes he can do the right thing, stand by it and makes decisions from the trust of the Winchester brothers.

Melissa C. – i miss Cas T^T its depressing now that he is gone right now. i miss watching him slowly learn about human nature and before he knew it he was beginning to feel emotion like us humans do. his lack of social skills are hilarious and they always make me laugh.

Dawn W. – Castiel needs to return simply because his story is not over. He promised Dean that he would set things right. Castiel has always kept his promises, even when Jimmy thought Cas hadn’t. He’s a well rounded and loved character who deserves a better ending than dissipating in a reservoir. It won’t be easy for him to make right the things that have gone awry but Supernatural isn’t about easy, is it? It’s about family and the rough patches that family encounters along the way. It’s an opportunity for another wonderful facet to be added to this beloved character.

Cecilia F. - Yeah we want castiel back no matter what it takes we all love and miss him on the show

Supernatural: Season 7 To Infinity & Beyond – Okay, the reason I want Cas back on the show, is that he became so much more than a character that was only going to be around for a couple of episodes. Misha Collins’ portrayal of Cas has been amazing to say the least. I know he made me fall in love with the character so much, I now feel a terrible ache when I watch Supernatural and he is not there. Dean, Sam and Bobby and what they have been through have made me love this show more than I thought I could ever love a tv show. But when a certain angel made an appearance in season 4, I instantly became a Cas girl. To me, the show is just not the same without him. *Mandy*

Alright folks, you know the drill. Sound off in the comments below to tell us why you want Castiel and Misha back. Or heck, go ahead and comment on the reasons why you *don’t* want him back. Y’all know how much I hearing from you!

I completely agree with all your reasons why the show needs Castiel. The only thing that kept my interest in season 6 was Castiel. I loved the show before he was on it, but 3 seasons of the same thing was getting boring, until Castiel came and gave the show a new lease of life. I think it’s insane that not only are they not giving him more screen time but they’re taking him away. Insanity.

  • Rei

omg I miss Cas so much! they need to bring him back, every episode of season 7 now I just keep thinking when are you coming back? you can’t stay gone no way! they brought him in, let us all get use to having his silly feathered ass around and now he’s just gone, not right at all.
I walked past the coats today at work and just happened to notice a tan trenchcoat on display..had a sad moment. Misha/Cas come back!

  • debann

I was so stupidly complacent at the end of Season 6. When others were complaining about Misha not being a season regular or the way Cas had suddenly morphed into the big bad, I wasn’t worried. Cas clearly started with the best of intentions and I absolutely trusted the writers to follow through with a Cas redemption storyline. I still cannot believe that this was it. Really? He dissolves in a reservoir? His story was so clearly unfinished, I don’t know how they dare feed us that sh*t and call it resolved.

Dean and Sam may be the heart of the show but it’s Cas and the other characters that provide the adrenaline and keep things moving along.

  • ScissorhandsMD

Is it lame of me to say this really made me cry? I agree 100% percent agree with all of your points! Supernatural doesn’t feel the same to me anymore. I still watch and will always watch because I am a devoted fan, but I can’t help but feel cheated by Castiel’s lame departure (I refuse to believe he is dead). Even if they had to kill him off *sobs* they could at least given him a more meaningful and far better death than what they gave him. All I ask is for the Supernatural writers to realize that. If they wanted him gone well at least give him a death suitable to one of Dean’s one and only closest friend that he’s ever had. I think the fans and the characters themselves could use it. Even if it did make me sob like a baby.

I want Cas AND Gabriel back!! I miss them BOTH so much! I just love those guys as characters and as people.

  • http://twitter.com/Inetux Ineta Leitane

This article made me teary. Castiel deserve to be saved, he is a part of family and he is the only friend that Dean has (Sam is brother, Bobby more like father figure) and Dean miss him. Yeah, he won’t admit it, but he miss him as hell. Why do yuo think Dean is now just like he was after John’s death?  Dean feel guilt because he wasn’t around Cas when he needed that, he only called Cas when he needed something from him :( And we still have this demon thing in show, why can’t we still have angels? Why? We need Cas  because he was one of the brightest part of the show, our poor fangirl hearts can’t always handle drama, we need something cute and bright sometimes too. And Dean needs him more than he will admit, Castiel somehow made Dean realise that  there is not only evil in this world, but that there is still hope and good. And they made so good character, character with more potentional than writers use it, why they wan’t to get rid of him.. Of course, Misha is big reason why I live Cas so much.

  • Erin Roman

Cas need to come back beacuse nothing is the same without him. Its easy to see that Dean is slipping back into his shoot first, ask questions later thing again. I found he was alot more thoughtful with Cas by his side. Perhaps because Cas was always there when he needed to talk. & if Dean needed time before they could talk Cas would wait around for him.He is also the character that brought out the most emotions from me. In “The Man Who Would be King”, I balled my eyes out for a good 1/2-3/4 of the episode. It is the most I ever felt for one character in the show.Cas can’t become just another person that has left Dean’s life. Especially when they didn’t get a chance at resolving their issues.

He also deserves a better send off then what he got. If he had to leave the show at all, I’d rather him leave to go back to Heaven and help fix the mistakes he made. It would comfort me to know that even though hes off the show, hes still looking out for Dean.

Simply, the show needs Cas, we need Cas and Dean sure as hell needs Cas back.

I want misha/cas back because I feel there is still so much about his storyline that is left unfinished. Removing cas was like removing a large chunk of the emotional/personal development that dean and sam had been working on for 3 seasons! Without him sam and dean feel a bit shallow and less fleshed out as they used to. It also bothers me that dean hasn’t really dealt with cas’s death…hes mentioned it a few times but always grouped together with other things bothering him…like its a foot note to why he feels himself slipping off the rails. And of course shortly after cas’s death deans emotional state switched to guilt over killing amy and lying to sam about it. Dean’s done a lot of bad things in his life…i think this one got a lot more air time than it deserved…and this guilt seemed to totally eclipse the depression he was feeling in regards to castiel. Also this return to just 2 boys on the road fighting the leviathans seems to be a pretty straight forward uninspired story arc (because we’ve seen it before)…i hope this story arc develops a bit more and that the leviathans don’t stay quite so lame. i love this show and i do even love several of the episodes in season 7 but as a whole its shaping up to be pretty overly simplified and missing a few key elements to make it wow me. missing items: scary scenes (after a few scary cas scenes in episode 1 i haven’t been afraid at all), unexpected plot twists (i’ve seen everything coming so far), and CAS! Here’s to hoping these missing things show up soon!

  • Elvenfay

As you said cas is family. He did every thing for his family, he became what he thought was a god to save his family and while he was drunk on the power, HE still did not kill his family. NOT even when they called death on him. Fact is angels are soldiers, and their leader left them (god) he had no where to turn… maybe he was suppose to what he did.

I want dean and same have to save him. You know like, they find out that he is trapped somewhere or how. I want cas to come back almost human, but with a spark of his divine power.

as for him messing up….. dean, Sam, and john have done just as bad or worse..dean broke the first seal, Sam freed Lucifer. Cas needs a happyish ending as well as the brothers!!!!

  • Eli_dark_soul

how can you screw up one’s death SO BADLY?
    i’m just gonna quote @Castian :
“I miss the show, but unfortunately I don’t feel connected to it anymore. Mostly because of how they’ve dealt with Cas’ death – read: how they didn’t. I can only see how this left so many unanswered questions, and now the show continues from S3 like S4-6 never happened. It’s just weird and unsettling. ”

Still watching the show, but im not so thrilled about it anymore.
Yes, Supernatural started off with Sam& Dean only but once Cas became part of it, we all couldn’t wait til he showed up in every episode , to make us cry or laugh our asses off.

Reasons why Misha should come back ?
    * Cas deserves more redemption than those last 5 minutes of his dying episode, and he deserves to apologize properly to Dean and Sam…Bobby also.
    * There cannot be any other character that influences us like Cas does. He was one of a kind in the history of characters.
    * WE LOVE HIM SO MUCH
    * He could help Sam&Dean in ways no one else could.
and millions of others that i dont have time to write right now.

I want Cas/Misha back again to Spn~ I want to see him again in Spn! I really MISS him! Spn without him make me feel boring~

  • Snakegrl1306

Castiel was such an amazing, complex character because he allowed us to see Dean and Sam through a new perspective. He became friends with Dean and Sam, and then tried to do the best for them no matter the personal cost. Castiel became an integral part of the Winchesters’ lives and his death did not fully convey that. Cas, our sweet and loyal angel, deserves better.

  • http://twitter.com/Mabulatious Maheen

I can’t say it enough that Castiel’s departure from Supernatural is not welcome at all. To see the boys nonchalantly going about their usual business without a single inkling of their feelings toward Cass ‘gone’ is more wrong than anything else in Spn at the moment. ‘The story has changed, you can’t undo it!’ is what I want to say to Sera Gamble right now. Honestly though? We fans hoped for Cass to be that person– a part of the Winchester family– just like Bobby. We or for lack of the better word, I wanted him to figure out humanity and learn the ways of battling demons without his heavenly powers at disposal.
And didn’t we already cover the part where Cass is not just any angel? He’s The Guardian Angel for the boys. There are too many loopholes this season and I will not be satisfied until Cass returns.

  • krittle

AGREED! missing castiel from this season. And I am liking this season, but it does feel disappointing

  • Neko

I think it’s to bad that supernatural returns to the two brothers only. I mean yes, of course It’s a part of the show, but in my opinion Supernatural started progress since season 4, the story, the character, always was better. Not just Castiel, but Gabriel, Balthazar… They was wonderful characters who deserved to be more importants, they have potential. We just saw them in like 2 episodes, that’s juste ridiculous. The show maybe was about two brothers at the beginning, but new things can be a good thing, a better thing. It’s a evolution, that’s all. A good one. And now,  everything and everyone killed like that, one after one.
And I did’nt talk about Cas. This is just killing me. He was the most wonderful character that I ever see. Seriously, I still watch the show, but it’s not the same. I miss Castiel so much, and his death was juste…  I don’t want to talk about it. He died juste like that,in two secondes. And nobody talk about him, nobody care.
I hope he will come back. (And maybe gabriel and Baltazhar too ?)
I want team free will complete again.

Sorry for the english, I’m french.

  • JupiterluvMars

Really? Is Castiel dead? When he sunk like that into the middle of the resevoir and all the leviathan came out, I just thought he’d be away for a while but definitely will be back. I love Castiel. Of course I do. It was such a shame to make him a baddie, then repent for all of five minutes before making him the baddie again, and drowning himself.

To be honest. I’m not finding the later seasons as scary as the first two/three. I’m a big scaredy-cat anyway, but part of the appeal of SPN was the grisly and paranormal deaths. But maybe watching 7 seasons of people corking it, has made me immune? Asylum is still one of the scariest episodes I’ve seen.

And why is every1 blathering on about Destial? Surely Wincest, is where it’s at? ;)

    • M. P.

Misha Collins told fans at a recent convention that he hasn’t been contacted for any new episodes, and they’re already more than half way through filming the season, so read into that what you will.  It is a real possibility, despite Gamble’s vague and coy promises, that we’ve seen the last of Misha and Castiel for this season, but maybe there’s still time for them to change their minds?. I don’t know.

As a huge fan of MIsha though, at this stage I’m actually hoping he’ll get a starring role on another TV series since I doubt they’ll ever make him a regular again. :( I have a feeling the most we might get now is a guest appearance similar to what we got with Jo in the “Defending Your Life” episode, or possibly in a time travel or AU episode like they’ve done before too. I wouldn’t be surprised if we had to wait for season 8 before they do it though.

  • http://twitter.com/Restless_ Bonnie

Well, I hear they’re doing another time travel episode soon. Perfect time to either bring Castiel back permanently, saved from the past (with Dean/Sam playing the thought police, since they know he could go off on his own now), or kill him decently (which would just break my heart all over again).

In that way I guess the writers really could near completely recon the last seasons like Sera so desperately wants to anyway.

I want Castiel back. Whenever I see someone with scruff, or during the hospital scenes when the doctors’ coats flap about and remind me of a trench coat, my heart twinges a little. And the cold treatment of Cas and Misha, really, I just don’t know how much more I can stand. I desperately want him back on the show.

  • Mnp

I was never really a fan of Supernatural until Cas showed up…He just made the series so much better…But I would agree, they need to bring Misha back rather than Cas back…its the actor that we have all fallen in love with, rather than the character he plays :) They definitely need to think of a spin-off series that has Misha as the lead character…Something like the otherside of Supernatural…for example, he talks about raging the “war” against Raphael…now we know who wins, but wouldnt it be a cool spin-off to see that part of the story?

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/S4U6UOQW2X63ZO6VSLHCFGV3BE Orlenda

is it wrong that i want him back for the eye candy?  LOL
