LAST MAN STANDING “Co-Ed Softball” Review

LAST MAN STANDING

LAST MAN STANDING “Co-Ed Softball” Season 1 Episode 5 – Last Man Standing returned this week with “Co-Ed Softball”, and I tried to make a resolution before watching this episode. I tried to tell myself that I wouldn’t look for things to complain about. I tried to start looking for things that I could compliment about the show, and I’m trying to offer more praise so I could show both sides of the spectrum of this program. But man, it is so hard.

Ok, I’m going to try really hard. I genuinely enjoy most of the interactions between the daughters on this show. I liked seeing Mandy and Kristin trying to bond over Mandy’s college essay, and the big payoff when Mandy ended up writing the essay about Kristin being her hero was really touching. It was also really fun seeing Eve pitch for Mike’s works softball team, and it was cute to see Ed warm up to her when she knocked the tooth out of an opposing player.

Unfortunately for Last Man Standing, though, this show is not a drama. There just aren’t that many jokes, and the jokes that are here feel forced and unfunny. Sometimes a character will say something, and in my head I’m thinking “That can’t be the whole joke”, but then the audience laughs uproariously. I feel like the show has so much potential, and a very promising premise, but it just doesn’t execute well enough comedically.

Random Thoughts:

- There’s no way that a Michigan fan and Ohio State fan would ever be together, let alone get married.

- I like how Vanessa called Mike “Castle” when she was sarcastically calling him a great detective. It was so transparent she was doing this just because it’s an ABC show. You couldn’t have said “Sherlock”, “Columbo”, or any other world-famous detective?

- Tim Allen really must love Michigan. Not only was Home Improvement set there, but his character in this show is a Michigan fan, and Allen does the voiceovers for the Michigan tourism ads you see on TV.

Actually he was born and raised in Denver, Colorado.  He moved to Michigan when he was thirteen and went to college there.
