The Amazing Race “We Love Your Country Already; It Is Very Spacious” Season 19 Episode 6 – This week’s episode of The Amazing Race started with all of the teams boarding the same flight to Malawi. Wow, that is quite a flight. Thankfully everybody got on the same flight, though, as they all make it to Malawi and get to their first road block: Wheeling giant bales of tobacco.
I really love these kinds of challenges. They’re fun to watch, competitive, and true to that country’s culture. Tobacco is 60% of the domestic product of Malawi, so it makes sense for the challenge to involve this. I’m starting to see a pattern in all of the challenges that I enjoy: They always involve the natives of that country. I love seeing the other tobacco runners bumping into them, helping them by pointing to the correct gate, and singing and dancing their encouragement. It really is a great little glimpse into their culture, and that’s what the race is all about!
On the other side of the likable spectrum, Laurence is really becoming the heel of this season’s race. First he criticized his son for forgetting how to put together the birdhouse last week, oh and by the way, his son is a record breaking sailor who’s the youngest person to sail around the world. It seems like Laurence is a bit jealous of his son’s success, and is always trying to point out how good he would be at challenges. This week when Zac asked if he was a bit winded, he denied it and said “No, I’m just warm”. Like he couldn’t even admit that he was out of breath as it would infer that he wasn’t a perfect specimen of a human being. Later on he criticized both the other girls at the truck-building challenge for not sewing! You know, because they’re girls, and all girls are genetically predisposed to being expert tailors. The guy is definitely a bit of a tool, and it’s unfortunate that he’s paired with such a likable kid that you want to root for.
The rest of the leg went off without much consequence. As soon as Amani and Marcus fell behind on the way to the road block, they were at the back of the pack for the rest of the leg. The majority of the last-minute drama came from a few of the teams struggling to carry their beds to the pit stop, and a few of them even neglected to pay their trucks. It was pretty heartbreaking for Amani and Marcus to see Bill and Cathi run past them, but for some reason, we got yet another non-elimination leg. Amani and Marcus were in first place last week, so I think they can definitely come back and overcome the speed bump. We’ll see next week!
Random Thoughts:
- The pessimist in me has got to try to picture that tobacco plant challenge if it were in the USA. I would picture all of the workers standing around, looking on in apathy and boredom.
- How come all of the impoverished kids in Africa have such awesome and colorful school uniforms? I want blue and purple outfits in the states!
- When they kept saying “Take two beds to Phil at the pit stop” at the furniture shop, I kept thinking they were saying “Take two beds to fill at the pit stop”. I was thinking, “what are they going to fill the beds with?” I felt pretty stupid.
