BEDLAM “Committed” Season 1 Episode 5 - Jed’s friend and fellow Bedlam resident Mark thinks he has a stalker. Strange phone calls saying ‘don’t leave me’ are bad enough, but then there’s the scratching in the walls, the writing scratched into the plaster next door, the stolen photographs stuck to walls and ceilings. Then Mark’s things go missing and he can’t help but wonder if it’s all Jed’s doing. He has been around an awful lot, after all.
Meanwhile, Jed’s visions tell him that one of the 19th century members of the Bettany family, Kate’s predecessors and owners of the asylum, had his mistress locked away there. Jed theorises that the ghost will stop haunting Mark if she’s reunited with her lover, so they dig his bones up to rebury them with hers. But then Jed gets a phone call that alerts him to Mark being in trouble — he gets there too late to save his friend.
Meanwhile, Ryan and Molly find a photograph of Jed’s birth mother, which leads them to question a former Bedlam hospital worker. He tells them that Jed’s mother was repeatedly raped by other workers, that they forced her to give birth at Bedlam to cover this up, and that the baby – Jed – was technically dead for three minutes before they managed to revive him. After Jed tells Ryan how he wishes he was ‘normal’, Ryan seems to decide to keep this newfound information to himself.
And Kate’s suspicions about her father were proved true this week, after she finds a necklace belonging to missing girl Zoe in Bedlam’s furnace, put there by father. Distressed, she tells Jed that she needs to leave Bedlam, and they share a heated kiss — before she changes her mind and walks away.
Okay, I know Mark had a dead girlfriend in his past, but unlike other residents who have been haunted he didn’t even suspect he was being haunted. He thought it was a stalker. Surely any rational person would have called the police? Especially after waking up to breakfast in bed and scattered rose petals. I was surprised he died in the end – I thought he would at least be allowed to live to redeem himself for his own stupidity. (I know, the police wouldn’t have been able to help him, but maybe they would have convinced him to move out until his flight to Australia? I don’t know, it was just a ridiculous storyline.)
The information Ryan and Molly uncovered about Jed’s mother was pretty brutal, and leaves the choices for his biological father wide open. We can’t rule out the Bettany’s either; it’s the right time frame for both Warren and his father, which would be a pretty awful twist. Not that Warren raping Bedlam patients would be any huge surprise after his penchant for abducting and murdering young women.
Of course, Warren being Jed’s father would be the world’s biggest obstacle for Jed and Kate – which is why I kind of hope it’s a genuine possibility. I’m not sure what we’re supposed to think of that kiss – should we be rooting for the pair? Because as far as I’m concerned Jed’s kind of sweet and Kate’s poisonous, and pairing them up would be awful. What do you think, dear reader?
Next week’s season finale looks to be a huge episode. While my feelings about Bedlam are lukewarm at best, I’m still kind of excited to see how this all wraps up!
