NEW GIRL “Kryptonite” Review

NEW GIRL “Kryptonite” Season 1 Episode 2 – The second episode of the Zooey Deschanel starrer was an interesting one in that it definately did not follow a typical sitcom structure. It carried on with the wacky adventures of Jess, and featured her singing in cars, bouncing basketballs, throwing pots onto lawns. The main plot involved Jess returning to her boyfriend’s house to retrieve her stuff.

I really liked the style of this episode. There was no discernable beat-by-beat structure to the telling of this story, the script was smart and funny and expanded the roles of the characters, effectively introducing Winston to replace Coach and, though he didn’t get much to do in this episode outside of wake up screaming to Jess’ singing and argue over rooms with Schmidt, he worked well in whatever role he was given.

Like I said, I really liked the script and I actually think that this episode was much better than the pilot, which was fine in introducing the characters, but was inconsistent, especially with regards to Jess, in terms of knowing who these characters were: is Jess a nerdy, awkward, unsociable woman or is she geek chic? This episode effectively discarded labels and went further afield of making her her own unique character, and of course the character as built around Zooey Deschanel is inherently charming and quirky, so it didn’t have to strive too far.

The episode effectively balanced the guys personal lives and Jess’ own adventures and made a real effort to create a deeper bond between them, and this week the confrontation between Jess’ boyfriend and his hair and Jess and her room mates was much better rendering that bond on screen than last week’s clichéd and poorly executed run of Dirty Dancing in the restaurant.

All in all, I really liked this episode and I’m more hopeful for hte future and quality of the show than was last week.

Hi, i saw both episodes, and all I can say is that I don’t get this show’s humor at all. And I don’t have a lot of tolerance for girls like Jess. I’ll give it another episode, but I don’t have high hopes. Can’t wait for House of Lies to start and have Kristen Bell back on TV!

I liked the episode but I think it is relying way too much on Zooey Deschanel being quirky and not enough on crafting a funny story.  I’m going to stick with it for a few more episodes but it hasn’t won me over yet.
