Coming off a successful run as fan-favorite River Song on Doctor Who, British actress Alex Kingston (also well-known for her work on the medical drama ER) will appear in a new 6-part follow-up to the legendary drama UPSTAIRS DOWNSTAIRS that experienced a resurgence when the much-beloved story was retold last year both airing on Masterpiece Theatre on PBS.

The series, which follows the lives and loves of the Holland family and servants, will chart a period of social change in Britain in which class structures and relationships between master and servant are tested to their limits. It is 1938 London, two years after the events in the most recently aired sequel, which garnered more than 7 million viewers, and the story will span the 12 months leading up to war.

Kingston will appear as “the uncompromising, straight speaking spinster, Dr Blanche Mottershead, the younger sister of the late Maud, Lady Holland and Sir Hallam’s Aunt”.

Returning cast members include Ed Stoppard, Keeley Hawes, Jean Marsh, Anne Reid, Claire Foy, Art Malik, Blake Ritson, Nico Mirallegro, Adrian Scarborough and Neil Jackson. Meanwhile, actor Kenneth Cranham (Made in Dagenham) will also join the cast.

Filming for the new 6-episodes of Upstairs Downstairs has just begun, but no air date has been set yet.
