GOSSIP GIRL “Yes, Then Zero” Review

GOSSIP GIRL “Yes, Then Zero” Season 5 Episode 1 – Summer’s over, Gossipers, just in time for Blair’s royal wedding. In the season five premiere of Gossip Girl, “Yes, Then Zero,” all the answers to our questions are revealed. Well, actually there’s only one question and one answer we care about…and it’s not how many girls Chuck slept with on his round-the-world boat trip with Nate.

It seems like everyone had a relaxing summer, but where I come from, we call such fleeting moments of calm ‘the eye before the storm.’ All it takes is a single Save the Date card to throw our cast of characters back into high drama. Even Gossip Girl is getting excited, as she’s been informed about the positive pregnancy test. Who’s expecting? Well, as neither Serena nor Blair are drinking…it must be the maid. We spent a summer waiting for that? Great mislead, but it is it a cop out? Stick around to find out…

Los Angeles proves to be the temporary tonic that Chuck needs to nurse his broken heart. Adopting the ‘yes’ theory of life, he has become open to any and all new experiences. And that’s different, how exactly? But there must be something in the filtered Pacific Ocean water, because Serena has turned into the best little production assistant in Hollywood. That’s right…NYC’s It Girl is fetching coffee and carrying scripts and loving it, despite back-stabbing co-workers who try to get her fired. Yeah, I know. It’s weird. But I do like the little trio of Nate and Chuck and Serena. It’s like she has two ridiculously hot older brothers looking out for her.

With everyone in California, Blair is left to man the island, tough to do when she’s also preparing for her upcoming wedding. I wonder if Kate Middleton went through half as much crap. From the flowers to the cake, the Prince’s mother uses royal traditions as an excuse to turn the wedding into her vision, not Blair’s…and Louis isn’t doing anything about it. But it’s only when Blair faces the possibility of appearing in Vogue wearing a hand-me-down wedding dress (c’mon…it’s vintage!) that she finally puts her foot down. If the prince doesn’t shape up, the wedding is off.

Unfortunately, her timing is off. Just as she’s prepared to throw a royal hissy fit, Dan finds out that Vanessa has sold his anonymous book and a section of it (one that heavily involves Blair) will be published within a matter of days. Calling on the prince and his connections, Dan pulls the plug on this, but not before he loses whatever affection Blair had for him after he all-too-willingly agrees to help her leave the prince, even as he knows Louis is trying to save her reputation.

Could Dan be the father of Blair’s baby? Because the maid was just a red herring and thanks to the trained eye of a professional seamstress, it’s revealed that Blair actually is pregnant, enough so that she might be showing by the time of her wedding. Gasp! But who’s the father? Louis is too obvious. Dan is a long-shot, as they claim they only kissed…but we’ve been lied to before. Chuck seems like the most likely baby-daddy. Becoming a father might be the best thing for him. At least it would keep him from cycling like a maniac down the mountains of L.A.

It looks like we’re in for a scintillating season of Gossip Girl. Can Blair keep her pregnancy a secret? Can Charlie/Ivy keep her con going? Tune in next week for more and let me know what you thought about the premiere below!

Much as I would love it – Dair won’t happen :( Dan and Blair had and have enough chemistry – but it all depends on how a scene is written. Both Badgley and Meester are good at this sort of thing…So if the scene required the smoldering and sighing and speaking-in-husky tones (that seem mandatory in every Chuck and Blair scene), then I’m sure Dan would have pulled it off but for reasons best known to the writers, Dan’s love is being shown as limpid, devoid of passion – though his every action shows how much he aches for Blair. And at one point it was shown that Blair reciprocated. Because we’ve had it instilled in our minds that Blair and Chuck are end game, it does seem futile to root for Dair but I for one would love for them to be together. It has nothing to do with Chair being unhealthy – but all that one-upmanship, constant jealousies and insecurities – come on it’s all fine in a teen romance or crush – but not in an adult, steady, fruitful relationship. And there is no reason to think that if Dair ever happens they’ll be lacking passion or depth – I see it as a loving relationship – with friendship, trust, respect, companionship and tons of great sex and passion! They will help each other blossom and be happy – isn’t that what relationships are about…But the writers will toe the Chair fan base line and we all know how this will end.Sigh! I would have loved for lonely boy and queen B to get together…
