THE PLAYBOY CLUB “Pilot” Season 1 Episode 1 – THE PLAYBOY CLUB has been a topic of conversation in the entertainment world even before its premiere last night. From critics saying the show lacked plot, any acting quality, and was just boring to others being up in arms that NBC would ever consider turning women into *gasp* sex objects! Because, you know, THAT never happens on television.
I have to admit, I went into The Playboy Club with low expectations based on these comments (more so the critics, the feminist aspect never even crossed my mind. apparently that makes ME a horrible feminist) and I was surprised! Brace yourself here – I didn’t find the show to be boring or lacking the way other people did at ALL. In fact, I sort of liked it!
Is The Playboy Club going to be the next EPIC series to hit television? Probably not. However, the show does do a decent job of injecting you into the world of the early 1960s, and for a pilot episode the plot managed to keep me engaged!
This goes without saying, but most of the action takes place inside The Playboy Club. We follow around a group of Playboy Bunnies, but our main focus is on Maureen (Amber Heard) the new cigarette Bunny. She catches the eye of Nick Dalton (Eddie Cibrian) an up and coming attorney in Chicago. Turns out that Dalton used to work for the mob, and he’s about to pay a visit to his roots.
Maureen piques the interest of a patron at the club, and the guy corners her and tries to get a little fresh. Apparently the men in The Playboy Club don’t realize the girls are there to look at, but not to touch. Long story short, there’s a struggle, Dalton comes to the rescue, and Maureen ends up killing the guy with her high heel. THAT was pretty awesome.
What WASN’T awesome was that the guy turns out to be the leader of the mob. Now Dalton, who apparently knows how to clean up after a murder, helps out Maureen and disposes of the body. He takes Maureen back to his place to clean up, which doesn’t end well for either of them. Turns out Dalton is involved with “the first Bunny”, Carol-Lynne (Laura Benanti) and well.. Carol-Lynne isn’t thrilled when she finds Maureen in Dalton’s apartment.
Things spiral from there, and the rest of the episode turns into Maureen dealing with the murder, Dalton trying to keep her calm, and Carol-Lynne solidifying her place as “Bunny Mother” in The Playboy Club.
So. Entertaining, yes. However the fact that I just typed the phrase “Bunny Mother” without any sense of humor makes me realize that the show is not the BEST thing on television, BUT I do think that it will grow into itself.
Personally, I found the Bunnies adorable, and each seems like they have their own story (one is a closeted lesbian married to a gay man, just as an example), and I’m looking forward to seeing how the rest of The Playboy Club develops!
