ROYAL PAINS “Me First” Review

Royal Pains (USA) Me First

ROYAL PAINS “Me First” Season 3 Episode 9 – It’s funny that I spent a good portion of this episode either totally pissed of at Evan or thinking he was the greatest boyfriend ever. That’s because he seems to be able to do both things very well. He threw a great big hissy fit when he found out that Paige and Hank both lied to him. He forgave Paige almost immediately, but still held on to his anger for Hank.

I’m not sure I get it. I mean he seems to understand why Paige kept her secret, but not his brother. I don’t blame Paige for keeping a personal secret about her mother but let’s face it, she wasn’t legally obligated to do so. Hank on the other hand *was* legally obligated. Oh and who legally obligated him? Paige.

Evan choosing Paige’s side over Hank’s is killing me and like I said, he’s really pissing me off. Next week is the final episode of the summer season and I have a feeling we’re not going to see a resolution to this particular conflict. The writer in me is enjoying the angst as I always do, but the rest of me just wants to headlsap some sense into Evan.

My favorite bits..

Evan’s imitation of the General.

“They look perfect. Just like Paige.” – Okay everyone, all together now..Awwwww!

Poor Hank. Rock, meet hard place.

Hank doing the movie trailer voice thing.

Hank playing with Simon. Beyond adorable.

Finally learning Paige’s big secret – that her mother is clinically depressed. I do understand why she’s been keeping it, but I was very happy to hear her say that the first thing she was going to do was tell Evan.

Gah. There’s nothing I hate worse than watching two people not communicate to each other. Would’ve taken maybe ten words for Paige and Evan to clear things up.

“Can you do it quickly?”
“Sure, I won’t even numb it.”
“Maybe not *that* quickly.”

Knowing as soon as I saw the creampuffs lined up, what Evan was going to be doing to them. Mean? Sure. Hilarious? Absolutely.

Divya started dating Raj at age eleven? Crazy.

“Don’t do fancy hair.”
“Why not?”
“Cuz it’s the law.”

Saying “Whoa!” when Hank did, as the golf ball went flying past his head.

Nothing is more important than family? Sorry Evan, but that doesn’t cover doctor-patient confidentiality. No matter how many windshields you break.

Wow, Evan is actually scaring me a little.

“I haven’t kept a secret from him since I broke his Han Solo and blamed the dog.”

Divya being the voice of reason. She is so right, sometimes secrets are kept for good reasons.

Yay for little hero Simon!

Super Hank! Love it.

Oh, now I totally get the “it’s the law” comment. Still really liking VanDyke.

Yeah dude, you might not want to choose a nickname like “VD”. LOL.

Evan apologizing to Paige. I knew he just needed to get over himself.

OMG can Hank be any more adorable than when playing with a little kid? He’s gonna make an amazing dad.

As soon as the door was locked, we all knew that Toby was going down. Right? Still, I do always enjoy watching Hank break down a door.

“I don’t need alcohol to have fun.” – OMG! I can’t even tell you how many times I have uttered those exact same words. Not that I’m opposed to a drink, but I never need one to act like a complete nut. I do that just fine on my own.

Who else was laughing when VanDyke fell off the surfboard? Like any of us thought he was really hurt.

Aw, very cute that Toby taking Simon’s medicine actually saved her.

Divya telling VanDyke about her past with Raj. Gotta admit, that surprised me a bit on a first date. Good for her though.

Hm.I kinda of like the whole “platonic dating” idea for both of them. Though there’s no doubt in my mind that the “platonic” part won’t last forever.

“This is a nice boat.”
“Yeah, I wonder whose it is.”

Evan promising Paige to be with her no matter what.

Hank apologizing to Evan? Seriously? Sorry but I still feel he has nothing to be sorry for.

Wanting to give Hank a great big hug after Evan closed the door on him.

The drama was a bit contrived, but entertaining. lol Hank & Jill – mature adults (Good! And the kissing looked real great!). Divya and VD – trying to become real mature adults (Good for them). Tobey and Simon – cute and on the road to be great adults in the future. Evan & Paige – dumb, immature and irrational.
It was great seeing the character of Evan look like a jerk for a change, but Team Evan & Paige do not have my vote. If they keep the relationship on the show, I hope it’s done in a funny way to laugh at them or something because it’s difficult to take them seriously anymore. Divya and the VD (lol), this could be a good couple and really interesting if the writers choose to keep it going.

Right now I say – Keep Tobey and hire her for Hankmed. Fire Evan Asap! And Jill, well.. she’s “Jill”. Enuff said. Jill needs to be around for all of us Jill Fans!

Wow, great point about Toby and Simon compared to Evan and Paige. Amazing to see who were the mature ones in this ep.

Good thing there’s only 1 ep left.  I couldn’t go more than one episode without seeing the HU-NORMOUS a$$h01e that is Evan every time he comes on screen.

Hank should fire him and hire a new business mgr–then Evan could sponge off Paige’s family–the General would LOVE that!!!

LOL! Yeah I bet the General would really love that. Ha!

I agree completely with you about the Hank/Evan/Paige mess, and I think Evan is acting like a prissy little girl (and has been for quite a few episodes. Come on writers, do you really need to turn Evan into a caricature of a whiny middle schooler who needs constant attention and praise?). I was so confused when Evan shut the door in Hank’s face at the end, especially after he raced over to Paige and forgave her instantly. Incidentally, he did that immediately after breaking Hank’s windshield, refusing to accept Hank’s explanation of his tough position, and *AGAIN* bringing up the fact that Evan got Hank to come out to The Hamptons. We get it Evan, you jumpstarted Hank when he was depressed. Reality check, that is the only useful thing you have done in almost three full seasons. You constantly try to get free stuff from Hank’s clients, you refuse to listen to anybody because somehow the Cosmos (i.e. the writers) have made you the luckiest fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants person ever, and only want to expand the business to show off to Paige and make the General like you.

I also realized, mostly this season, that I don’t like any of the medical stuff in this show. The writers have Hank use the medical names of every illness, even though normal doctors tend to tell the patients what they have IN ENGLISH. This was most prevalent last week when Hank rattled off all the medical terms for Boris’ poisoning symptoms (I remember some inane medical term being used instead of “swelling of the ocular nerve”, which was already a medical term). The writers are turning the medical part of the show into just listing the craziest illnesses they can (the bus driver whose arteries collapsed during the accident in episode one of this season is a prime example) and finding the rarest forms of common illnesses (like when Marissa had toxoplasmosis WHILE pregnant, which is the only time it has any chance of creating side effects in humans, or else every cat owner in the world would die).

Yeah I think the fact that Evan went from breaking Hank’s windshield in a temper tantrum of epic proportions, to running over to Paige and being all lovey-dovey and forgiving. Made no sense whatsoever. Especially given that Hank practically raised Evan after their mom died and their dad left. Maybe they’re trying to show us how that closeness can bring them apart during a conflict, but it’s still not making a whole lot of sense to me.

I know a lot of fans think Paige’s secret being her mother’s depression was lame, but for me it works.  I agree the reveal was drawn out far too long, but I think that’s a result of the writers following too many complex story lines this season which meant they could only advance a story significantly every second or third episode.  But, depression is a serious issue for many families.  Sadly, despite advances in treatment and changes in how depression is viewed, it still carries a social stigma.  The General’s reaction, while ignorant and hurtful, is realistic.  There are still people who think like he does.

What didn’t work for me is Evan’s reaction to the situation.  In pre-season interviews, the producers said they wanted to inject some drama into the super-sweet “Pevan” relationship, but this conflict burst into the open *and* was resolved in the space of one episode.  And I get that Evan is angry and hurt, and that he feels an obligation to be loyal to the woman he’s intending to marry, but his rejection of Hank is so over the top that I don’t buy it. How can someone who is acting as immaturely as Evan is be the CFO of a successful company.  They were doing so well at making Evan grow up, and now he’s back at square one!

I dislike VanDyke a little less this week, but this relationship still bores me.  He and Divya are romantic types…the wild guy/jerk with the inner insecure little boy and the uptight princess who needs to let her hair down…rather than actual people.  And I don’t think for a minute that the platonic thing is going to last more than two episodes.  YAWN!

The case of the week was great, again!  Great inside joke with a girl who was on “The Nanny” playing a nanny.  Boy, seeing her all grown up made me feel old!  I’m not a kid person, but I do like seeing Hank interact with children.

One sort of random thought…when Evan smashed the windshield…Boris has just been poisoned…Marissa and Carlos have been sent away to a safe house….there’s shouting and the sound of breaking glass, and the Mossad Squad is nowhere to be seen?

Next week is the summer finale.  It will be interesting to see what gets set up for the winter episodes.  The previews suggest something will happen with Paige’s mother.  I’m betting Hank will find out about Divya’s predicament, either by seeing her at the hospital, or being served some sort of legal papers from Raj’s family. I’m hoping we get some forward movement on the Boris front.  I’m still hoping and praying for The Vengeance of Dieter, the Badass Battle Butler.  But, I’m thinking if we get anything, it will be ambiguous…is he a turncoat, or a faithful servant gone Lone Wolf?

Really? Fans have problem with the depression thing? For me that wasn’t an issue at all. I can totally see why Paige would keep that private. It’s purely Evan’s reaction that has me in a tither.

I do totally get why you dislike VanDyke and honestly I can’t really say why I’m not right there with you. Something about him just clicked for me and I instantly liked him. To each their own, right?

Good point about the Mossad Squad ignoring the signs of a possible attack. What were they all sleeping? LOL.

So hoping for a great resolution to Dieter’s storyline, too. Fingers crossed.

So, like most, I agree that Hank was obligated to keep the secret, and that Evan’s reaction was way over the top. Where I think I differ is that at the end, Hank is in a bad place with Paige’s dad – who is being a lunkhead, but I guess that is what is required to run for office these days – and just like Hank had to make a choice, so did Evan. And, Evan chose Paige. He had already promised to be there for her forever, so if he had left withe Hank, well, he would be breaking that promise.

So while Evan is a brat, he is also between a rock (Paige’s dad) and a hard place (his love for his brother).

As for the little boy – so cute, and yet, when Hank and Jill sent her off to put him to bed, after saying they could *not leave her alone the boy* – come on, I knew she was going to pass out again. And, did anyone else think, “this kid needs a play date with other kids?” He’s being sent where? To *boarding school*?? He needs to be socialized first for crying out loud. so glad I am not rich or famous if that is what they do to their kids.

The producer of RP tweeted a cover script  of Season 3 – Episode 13 directed by Mark Feuerstein, which they start shooting tommorow.

Unfortunately, this proves my worst fears of the direction of Royal Pains.  Less about Divya and Jil, and the doctoring to more about Hank, Evan, the Lawson family and all of their personal drama.

Too bad.  I won’t expect much from them next year.  I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a whole new cast to be 3rd characters for Hank and Evan to be around with.  A token Divya storyline, and if Jill’s still around the usual background role.
