SWITCHED AT BIRTH “The Homecoming” Review

SWITCHED AT BIRTH (ABC Family) The Homecoming (3)

SWITCHED AT BIRTH “The Homecoming” Season 1 Episode 10 (Season Finale) - The first season of SWITCHED AT BIRTH has gone by so quickly! As a season finale, “The Homecoming” does a great job of ending the chapter and introducing new plot, in preparation for next season. We have the character of Angelo to look forward to, as well as the new rivalry between Bay and Daphne. We are also left to think about the possibility of relationships between Daphne and Wilke (yes!) and Regina and Angelo (no!). How long will Emmett and Bay last? Will Kathryn assert herself more in season two (I hope so)? What will become of the lawsuit? Tonight’s episode even illustrates the difficult task of reading lips and how much effort it takes for a deaf person to follow a conversation with hearing people. All in all, a well-rounded episode.

There is something to be said for getting to the point. Poor Bay gets a double dose with her biological dad showing up and Daphne confronting her about Emmett. I am glad the writers didn’t drag out finding the dad or revealing the relationship to Daphne.

Well, that was out of the blue. I guess it’s easier to find, or be found by, a biological parent than one would expect. Bay just had to advertise in the newspaper. I absolutely love Bay’s outgoing yet vulnerable personality – witty and sarcastic, but bubbly as opposed to moody.

Angelo is ostensibly making an effort. But “credit card Adam” makes things seem iffy. What are his motives and end goal besides money and getting back at the hospital? Does he really want to re-unite with Regina and get to know Bay and Daphne? So irritating when he asked Daphne, “you can’t understand a word I’m saying can you?!”

It was equally rude when Wilke asked how well Emmett could read lips. But this turned funny when Toby responded, “well enough to know you’re talking about him.” Wilke and Toby approached Emmett like they were going to mug him or something.

The whole point of the lawsuit was to get the hospital to admit wrongdoing! How could Angelo have paid off a witness when it’s implied that he’s using someone else’s credit card? I may have just answered my own question – he used someone else’s credit card.

Regina makes plans to open her own salon but runs into loan troubles. I assume she will need the Kennishes to co-sign a loan. What will a Kathryn/Regina partnership mean for her hair salon, especially when Kathryn is finally realizing that she has pushed her own feelings aside, in favor of everyone else.

John’s attempt to sign is hilarious to watch. Toby’s sign for Bay… (enough said)!! It’s good to see Toby acting like a big brother.

Daphne is taking a stand or two: Emmett is mine; and get rid of the so-called dad. Yikes, get out of her way!! Hopefully she won’t turn into a complete witch next season.

You are right, this episode is packed full of important moments, and turning points.

I think that Kathryn might just end up a partner in Regina’s salon – her comment “at least you know what you want do” was, I think, very telling.  She is feeling that her life is losing its meaning. Think about it – she is a stay at home mom, whose children are almost grown. She has defined her life in terms of her children, and now with all the turmoil of two daughters, unexpected family twists and all, she is feeling lost. A partnership with Regina might just be the best possible outcome for her, giving her life new direction and also allowing her to get to know Regina better.

I can so totally relate to Emmett and his problems in the hearing world. I am deaf in one ear, have been since I was 17, and I have problems hearing soft spoken people (just speak up, folks!) and understanding what others are saying when we are in a noisy public place. In fat, I hate going out with a group of friends, and would rather have them to my house, so I have a chance of following the conversation! I too sometimes just give up like Emmett did, and just nod and smile, hoping I am not agreeing to do something I don’t want to. Even my family do not truly understand my problems wiht hearing, despite having lived with it so long. So, Emmett’s hearing/non hearing points resonate with me!

I am not sure what to think about Angelo – I do think he has a hidden agenda. What it is, well, I just do not know. Regina clearly wants him gone, and yes, he did walk out, but people do change, and as you get older, family means more to you. I think his desire to get to know Bay is genuine, even if there are other motives involved.

I for one cannot want for the next episodes…..

Oh, forgot to mention – does anyone else think the music festival will end up being a disaster??
