FALLING SKIES “Mutiny/Eight Hours” Season 1, Episodes 9 and 10 – I got a sneak peek at this week’s two-part season finale of Falling Skies which follows the 2nd Mass resistance fighters as they move closer to the enemy base. Although I’m sure all you Falling Skies fans are anxious to get information about the new alien forms we saw last week, you won’t find any of those spoilers here, so you’ll just have to tune in tonight to see what happens for yourselves.
The first part of the finale, the episode titled “Mutiny,” deals with a few unresolved issues among the ranks of the 2nd Mass. With Weaver’s breakdown last week, Tom is still trying to figure out what the best course of action is to keep everyone safe as they move forward with the coordinated attack on the alien structure.
Although there is a lot of necessary plot development in this episode, it is dialogue heavy and rather slow. There is an intense stand off scene, but not much else stands out as particularly memorable. I thought the pacing was somewhat slow and had the episode been cut in half, they could have given us all the relevant information without dragging on. That said, this episode really works as an extended set up for the final Falling Skies episode of this season, so it’s a good thing that TNT decided to lump the two episodes together.
The second part of the finale, “Eight Hours,” is the opposite of “Mutiny” in terms of energy and pacing. This episode is loaded with creepy moments, intense action and a general sense of apprehension and urgency. There is so much I would love to talk about after watching this episode, but any plot descriptions would spoil the events in “Mutiny” so I’d rather not risk it. It is enough for me to say that I got sucked into every character’s story line and there were moments where I was holding my breath, completely captivated by the action unfolding on screen.
Although we don’t get all the answers to the questions we’ve been asking all season, we definitely get closer than we’ve come before. Despite all their losses, there is a ray of hope left for humankind. It’s exciting to see how resourceful and resilient humans can be when they work together.
Of course, the finale ends on a cliffhanger, but it’s not the kind of cliffhanger you would expect. I was completely baffled by it and immediately irritated that I would have to wait until next season to find out what would happen next. In the end, even if “Mutiny” was slow, it was worth watching to get properly set up for “Eight Hours” which ended up being one of the more exciting episodes of the season. If you’ve been keeping up with Falling Skies this season, this is a finale you will not want to miss.
