ABC Family’s SWITCHED AT BIRTH has been given a full first season order of 22 episodes! The series is groundbreaking for its seamless inclusion of performers with disabilities. It follows two teenage girls who discover they were accidentally switched as newborns in the hospital. Bay Kennish grew up in a wealthy family with two parents and a brother, while Daphne Vasquez, who lost her hearing at an early age, grew up with a single mother and grandmother in a working class neighborhood. Both families meet and struggle to learn how to live together for the sake of the girls.
In the words of Kate Juergens, Executive Vice President, Original Programming & Development, ABC Family, “[the show] has heart, humor, drama and an incredible cast that has brought beautifully nuanced performances to every role.”
Switched at Birth stars Katie Leclerc as Daphne, Vanessa Marano as Bay, Constance Marie, D.W. Moffett, Lea Thompson, Lucas Grabeel, and Sean Berdy. Marlee Matlin is also a recurrent guest star. Lizzy Weiss, Paul Stupin and John Ziffren serve as executive producers.
The summer finale of Switched at Birth airs Monday, August 8 at 9:00PM ET/PT. The series is scheduled to return in early 2012.
