COVERT AFFAIRS “Welcome to the Occupation” Season 2 Episode 8 - When the attendees of an executive meeting of an energy giant (including an undercover CIA agent) are taken hostage by an eco-terrorist group, Annie is sent in gather intel before an extraction plan can be arranged. She’s not sent alone, however, but finds herself teamed up with Joan – and Ben.
The plan is for them to go undercover as a crew from a television station specialising in eco/environmental issues, and it seems to be going well – until Annie angers the leader of the terrorists and gets herself, Joan and Ben taken hostage too. Why? Because she knows the terrorists have no intention of letting the hostages go free, so it is up to them to save the day without weapons, backups or even a clear route of escape.
And save the day, they do. While Joan kicks some serious ass in the office, Annie and Ben make their way up to the roof to find the rope needed to abseil to the ground and intercept the leader of the terrorists, who, it turns out, isn’t actually an eco-terrorist but merely a hired thug.
That leads up to my favourite part of a pretty awesome episode – the twists. The final twist, with the terrified-yet-brave exec being the mastermind behind the hostage-taking, was great. Even better was the opening scene with the ‘eco-terrorists’ coming together. I was convinced that the main guy was either going to attack someone in the lift or, in a twist, be attacked himself. I definitely wasn’t expecting them to be together. It felt vaguely
Meanwhile, Jai visits his father, Henry, and discovers that he’s been in contact with journalist Liza Hearn. Jai attempts to speak to her, but she gets him to meet her later. He attends the meet – and finds his father waiting. They share this interesting exchange:
Henry: “I didn’t know you had it in you, son.”
Jai: “Do you know what the definition of treason is? … Leaking confidential information to Liza Hearn. Now there’s a legacy to be proud of.”
Henry: “For you, as well. We share two important things – DNA and a last name. So if I go down, you go down, or you can listen to what I have to say.”
Is Jai going to become a traitor like his father, giving Liza even more ammunition against Arthur Campbell? We already know he’s not happy with his current position in the CIA and he’s not exactly the Campbells’ biggest fan, but would he really go so far as to try to bring Arthur down?
Annie’s love life is on a firmer footing this week. We start and end the episode with Annie spending time with (doctor) Scott, and they seem to be hitting it off really well. We also get closure between Annie and Ben – though there are definitely still sparks between them. I can’t help but wonder how long this will all last, though. Scott seems forgiving of Annie’s hectic schedule so far, but will he eventually want more of her time? And will Ben stay far enough out of the picture to allow her to have a healthy, happy relationship with someone else?
And, this may just be me, but Danielle, Scott and the kids seemed to be a nice little unit this episode. Could something happen between them instead?
Overall, a brilliant episode and one that I can’t wait to rewatch. It was awesome seeing Joan out in the field and I cannot wait to see what Jai does next. Roll on next Tuesday!
