WILFRED on FX is The Must Watch Dark Irreverent Comedy Of The Summer

I have to tell you about FX’s new series WILFRED, which stars Elijah Wood and Jason Gann. I have been curious about it ever since I read about it. Why? Well because it follows Ryan, a man who sees his neighbor’s dog, Wilfred, as a man in a dog costume… wait, what? Yep, sounds pretty out there right?

The show is based on the original Australian series created by Jason Gann, who stars as Wilfred the dog. And after seeing a few hilarious clips from the series (you can watch a couple below), I couldn’t wait to see more.

Well, now that I have seen the first three episodes of Wilfred, I can honestly say that I totally love it. It’s not really like any other show that I have seen. It’s so wrong yet so hilarious. Wilfred is such an irreverent character, yet you want to keep watching to see what he’ll do next. And I think Jason Gann’s Australian accent, just adds to the absurdness of it all.

The series is set up around Ryan (Elijah Wood), who develops some sort of relationship with Wilfred, after his neighbor, Jenna (Fiona Gubelmann), asks him to watch Wilfred for a bit. Wilfred helps Ryan, who’s not at a great place in life, overcome his fears and problems in a very unusual way. The worst part is, even as a viewer you’re not really sure what Wilfred’s motivation is. Is he a good dog or a bad dog? But in the end, it doesn’t really matter, what matters is the journey these two go on. Poor Ryan, he doesn’t know what he’s in for.

Wilfred is definitely a dark comedy in the vein of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, so if you enjoy this type of show, this is without a doubt a must see. From the opening scene, which is hilarious, to the very last minute, you won’t be bored with this half-hour show.

Wilfred premieres tonight, June 23, at 10pm on FX. In the meantime, you can watch a couple of promos which should give you an idea as to the tone of the show.

Is it anything like Greg the Bunny?

I’ve never seen Greg the Bunny, so I’m not sure. But I did watch a clip and it doesn’t really look like it’s the same.

In Wilfred, Ryan realizes that it’s weird he’s seeing Wilfred as a man, when everyone else sees him as a dog.

Well then I’ll just check it out. Greg the Bunny was a hilarious show starring Seth Green who had a talking puppet bunny.

So chrisjozo, what did you think of Wilfred?

And I’ll have to add Greg the Bunny on my list of shows to check out.

It was good. I just got around to watching it. A couple of the jokes didn’t fit my taste though. I’m not into toilet humor so the fart jokes and the dog crapping in the boot weren’t funny to me. Neither was that ending with the dog humping the teddy bear. Otherwise a lot of it was hilarious especially the numerous drafts of the suicide note.

Haha, yeah that suicide note was pretty great. Probably what got me right into the show. I do agree that the pooping in the shoe is not really my cup of tea either, but I forgive those because there are other moments I love.

And come on! that teddy bear humping was kind of funny… kind of :)
