While we’re still stuck in the depths of hellatus and weeks away from (hopefully) having Supernatural makes its yearly visit to San Diego’s Comic-Con, I’ve been wiling away the time by watching episodes from previous seasons. On season six of Supernatural there were a few characters who were keeping some very big secrets – some of which came out pretty quickly (Sam being out of Hell for a year, for instance), while others took a bit longer (one word – Castiel).
As I watch the previous seasons, I see that lying is a theme that started very early on in the series and is something that has carried on throughout. Whether the lies were for self preservation or the preservation of someone else, everyone on the show has had reason to keep secrets from someone at one time or another.
Some of the lies told on the show were small and rather insignificant in the grand scheme of things, so I’ve instead concentrated on the ones that I felt were the doozies – the ones that had a major impact on a character or their future.

Sam and Dean go back to their old home to find that something is terrorizing the new family living there. Fearing that it has something to do with the demon who killed their mother, Dean makes a tearful phone call begging his father to come help them. Later, when they meet Missouri, the psychic tells them that she hasn’t seen their dad – even though he’s apparently been camped out on her couch.
This lie was significant to me because I really felt like the boys needed their father with them and though I understood the motivation behind both John’s and Missouri’s actions, it still broke my heart.

Poor Dean. I actually felt sorry for him when this one came out. Who could blame him for holding back the fact that his father had told him on his deathbed to do whatever was necessary to save his brother, including killing him? How exactly was Dean supposed to tell Sam something like that? In the end he does it over a beer, which is where many deep conversations among the Winchesters take place.

Dean played the fearless hero for most of season three, after making a deal with a demon to save Sam’s life. Banging hot twins, snarfing down greasy junk food and celebrating his last Christmas – I think a part of him may have even believed his own party line for a while. But we all knew that he was simply putting on a brave face and it wasn’t until he confronted himself in a nightmare brought on some magic root, that he finally admitted his terror to himself and his brother.

Dean comes back from Hell and soon figures out that there is something going on with his brother. But no matter how many times he asks, he gets fed the same story. Even Castiel knows that something is up with Sam but nobody can get to the truth. This was one secret that took its sweet time to be revealed, I mean at one point they even gave us a red herring and made us think that it was just that Sam was having sex with a demon. But boy howdy, when it came out that Sam wasn’t just banging a demon, he was drinking her blood and using it to kill other demons, I thought I was going to fall out of my chair.

To be fair, we can’t just point out Sam for having a big secret in season four, because Dean was holding back one of his own. Not that he truly remembered as soon he poked his hand out of his grave, but he also wasn’t forthcoming with the information when he did start to remember what he did in the pit. Just as Sam had his reasons for keeping his secret (remember, Sammy thought he was actually doing a good thing), I believe Dean did as well. I think that some people hide the terrible things they’ve done as a way to protect those they love. Dean’s reluctance to admit that he tortured souls in Hell came not only from his own shame, but a need to keep his brother from knowing something that awful.

Dean and Sam show up in Bobby’s home town after hearing of a dead guy killing his neighbor. But rather than being happy to have their help, the elder hunter seems intent on shooing them out of there as soon as possible. What gives? Well it turns out that Bobby’s dead wife has exited her grave along with a bunch of other stiffs in town and he’s trying to keep her ‘alive’ as long as possible. This one gets filed as another heartbreaking secret in my book, for who can truly blame Bobby for not wanting a second chance with the woman he loved? At the end, when he asks the boys how many times he was going to have to kill the love of his life, I can’t help but to cry for him.

This lie was so big that it literally lasted the entire season and when it was revealed I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. Castiel making a deal with Crowley to locate the souls in purgatory and use them as his own personal weapons’ stash was both ingenious and incredibly stupid. I still maintain that the angel did it for the greater good of all, but the results were devastating. This secret was gargantuan and also completely and utterly life-changing.
The moment Cass agreed to his deal (anyone else wondering if he had to kiss Crowley or is that just me?) he set himself on a path of self destruction that ended with him turning into someone, and something, else. Time will tell whether he truly is a god or just thinks he is, but either way I myself am praying to Cass that a redemption is in his future.
So there are my picks for biggest lies and secrets on the show. What about you guys? Are there any that stick out in your minds after six seasons? Sound off in the comments below and let me know.
