I was a late comer to the NCIS phenomenon and only started watching the series after USA started airing older episodes. The first one I stumbled across happened to be ‘SWAK’ and after that, I was hooked. Not wanting to see too many episodes out of order, I immediately started renting the DVDs, starting with season one. With each new episode I watched I was more and more in love but I forced myself to stay off of any chat boards or converse with anyone about the show as I really wanted to be unspoiled.
I think my plan worked to my advantage in more ways than one. Not only was I unspoiled simply by not being exposed to any information about the series, but by watching all of the episodes so long after they were on the air I missed the live buzz around them as well. I had no internet rumors of actors leaving the show or possible storylines spoiled from an interview with a writer on the series. While those who saw the entire series from the beginning may have seen some of these moments coming, I was blissfully unaware of any of them until they happened. I was so shocked by most of these scenes that most of them literally made me gasp out loud.
Warning: There are spoilers in this article. If you have never watched NCIS, stop now.

Like I said, I had read nothing about the show before watching it and though I had of course known that Kate was no longer on the series, I didn’t know exactly how she left it or when. So when that bullet came out of nowhere (especially during a moment where we all thought things had finally calmed down) and blasted her blood into Tony’s face, I lost it.
I’m pretty sure I may have yelled out some sort of expletive to the creators and the writers of the series for taking her away like that, but I can’t be sure.

The part that kills me during the scene where Gibbs retires is not just him putting a hand on Tony’s shoulder and telling him that it was his team now. No, the part that makes me break into tears every single time is when Abby realizes what’s happening and says his name in a panic. By the time Gibbs shushes her and kisses her on the cheek, I’m always a blubbering mess.
Another moment that I never saw coming, this one was as sad as it was shocking.

This was one moment where I’ll admit I did have some clue what was going to happen, but it still doesn’t take away the fun of the reveal to the rest of the team. With no previous info about Jeanne, I still had this nagging feeling that she couldn’t just be a regular woman if the series made so much effort to show her and Tony’s growing relationship.
I immediately thought that she was La Grenouille’s daughter, but they played a good shell game with us all season and even I wasn’t positive until Jenny finally said it when he went missing.

After Jenny’s death and the aftermath of the case that surrounded it, Vance calls everyone on Team Gibbs into his office and proceeds to tell them all that they are going to different locations. McGee is sent to the cyber crimes unit, Ziva back home and Tony on to an aircraft carrier – leaving Gibbs with a new team to lead. Without those four characters working together there is no show and I was flabbergasted at the news.
Yes of course I knew that somehow everyone would be back together again someday, but as I didn’t know when that was, I was still pretty shocked by it all.

The fact that Gibbs had killed the man responsible for the deaths of his wife and daughter wasn’t a secret to anyone watching the show. We’d known all about it since way back in season three, but what did come as a surprise was the story coming out for everyone else to hear. I’m still not quite sure why they revealed it, considering that nothing really happened with it.
After all, the file on the whole incident is filed away in a dark corner somewhere and those that do know, did not seem to find the news all that surprising, nor did anyone threaten Gibbs with arrest for the vigilante murder. Not that I wanted that of course, but when Abby found out the truth, I sort of figured that’s where we were heading. No matter how the storyline played out though, it was still a shock when Gibbs’ deep, dark secret was suddenly revealed.
Now those are just my picks for more shocking moments, but I have a feeling that you guys are probably going to have a bunch more of your own. Feel free to comment below and let me know what you think the most shocking moments have been on NCIS.
