Jason Patric and Lucy Punch have been cast as the leads in FX’s new series POWERS, which is based on the graphic novel series of the same name by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming.
Jason Patric (The Losers, The Lost Boys) will star as Christian Walker, a homicide detective devoted solely to cases that involve “powers” (people with superpowers). Lucy Punch (Bad Teacher will play his partner, Deena Pilgrim.
Powers is one of my favorite comic books and of course I was really excited when they decided to make a show out of it, but also worried a bit, because it’s such a complex and inventive story. I still wonder how they are going to bring parts of it to life.
As for the casting, which of course is the most important part, even Jason Patric doesn’t really look like Christian Walker from the comics, I think it’s a pretty good choice and am looking forward to seeing what he does with the part.
As for Lucy Punch (Bad Teacher), I honestly have my doubts, because while I have always enjoyed her in films/shows she’s been in, she always plays sort of “girly” characters (from what I’ve seen at least). And Deena Pilgrim is no lady, she is one strong (for lack of a better word) bitch. So I guess only time will tell if Lucy Punch will be able to capture Deena Pilgrim’s essence.
Powers is a high concept crime procedural where the detectives police the brutal and sensational crimes surrounding super power beings, while illuminating the weaknesses and strengths of humanity in the process. Powers follows the life of “Christian Walker” (Patric), a homicide detective devoted solely to cases that involve “powers” (people with superpowers). The pilot also stars Lucy Punch as “Deena Pilgrim,” Walker’s partner; Charles S. Dutton (Roc) as Walker’s indefatigable boss, “Captain Cross”; and Bailee Madison (Just Go With It) as “Calista,” an acerbic 10-year-old girl drawn into Walker’s life.
The pilot is written by Charles H. Eglee (The Shield, Dexter, The Walking Dead) and will be directed by Michael Dinner (Sons of Anarchy, Justified). Eglee and Dinner serve as Executive Producers along with Bendis, Oeming and David Engel. Sony Pictures Television and FX Productions will co-produce.
