Top 5 Female Characters of the Whedonverse

Top Female Characters in Whedon Universe

Last week, I wrote about my Top Five Male Characters of the Whedonverse. There seemed to be discord among fans that I had omitted few favorites (sorry Wesley and Angel!), and this week I’d like to take you through my Top Five Female Characters of the Whedonverse. I’m sure that this will also lead to debates, but hey, that’s what this column is for!

I want to reiterate that I still have not watched Dollhouse, so, sadly, that series is missing from my character list. I am going to partake in the show; I just haven’t had a chance to do so since last week. While the male characters were difficult, the female characters posed a different set of problems.

How to pick the top five when there are so many? How am I really defining “top five”? I posed these questions to several Whedon loving friends, and we decided that “top five” is opinion based as well as character development throughout the series. That said, there are going to be omissions from this list that caused me (severe) pain, but I’m hoping that you find the choices well thought out!

Here they are in no particular order – The Top Five Female Characters of the Whedonverse (aside from Dollhouse)!

Cordelia Chase

Cordelia Chase

Cordelia begins her journey through Joss’ world in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and when we first meet her, she is “Queen C”. Cheerleader, ruler of her popular clique, and self centered as all get out. Cordelia provided the comic relief (“Excuse me, but I have to call everyone I have ever met right now!”), but under her perfect hair and clothes, Cordy is a character that is bursting with potential.

The flip side of Cordelia is really brought out during Buffy’s second season when she discovers Buffy’s secret. While she still freaks out, she also helps out – which is more than we can say she would have done in season one. She and Xander also find out they’re attracted to each other, which is hilarious in itself. While she and Buffy never become best friends, I think we can all agree that the Buffyverse would have been lacking without Cordelia’s transformation.

Then she moves on to Angel. The Cordelia we get to know in Angel still has remnants of the old Cordy, but has grown so much as a person that she’s also unrecognizable. She’s moved to Los Angeles to become an actress, but ends up helping Angel out with his agency – Angel Investigations. She and Doyle become close – which is ultimately where Cordy receives her powers to have visions of people in trouble.

This is Cordy’s huge turning point and when she becomes the heroine we all remember her for. Talk about a character development, try to point out a female arc better than Cordy’s.

Willow Rosenberg

Willow Rosenberg

I toyed back and forth with Willow, not because I dislike the character, but because I wasn’t sure she was a “top 5″. Then I was outvoted. SO. Onto Willow.

Willow is also from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and begins the series as a meek bookworm, with a major crush on Xander. She is Buffy’s best friend, and helps the Scooby Gang through her knowledge of computers, books, and just all around smarts.

Willow was a character that I loved on Buffy. She was realistic, was smart, and wasn’t sorry because of it. While she needed to work on her self confidence, Willow was a devoted friend and was always ready and willing when she was needed.

Her story continues through the series when she discovers that she’s pretty much a natural witch; and begins to study the Wiccan religion. I won’t go into this in depth, but her powers become a huge plot point in the sixth season.

You can’t mention Willow without mentioning Tara. Tara and Willow were the first lesbian couple to be seen on U.S. television, and Willow’s love for Tara sparked a good deal of angst in the Buffy world. By the end of the series, Willow has transformed from the shy girl we all knew and loved, to a confident woman that we all adore.

Zoe Washburne

zoe

In Firefly there is one woman that stands out for me. Zoe.

Zoe is the embodiment of confidence, loyalty, and manages to hold her own on a crew of men. She’s first mate of Serenity, and Captain Reynolds go-to woman.

While we only got to see Zoe for a short period of time, it was enough time to become wowed by her. She has an unwavering loyalty for Mal. Even with her husband on Serenity’s crew – her military training is never far away – she takes orders from her Captain first and foremost. It’s this loyalty that makes her great. Zoe can more than handle herself as a member of the crew as well. What’s better than a woman that can kick Jayne’s butt and still look good doing it?

I won’t even go into how bad assed she is in Serenity; just that her character is solid, and never wavers.

River Tam

river

River was one, like Willow, that I was unsure about adding to the list. But then I remembered Serenity, so I figured I’d better. First things first, I love River. Her random comments always make me laugh, and even when they seem to come totally out of left field, they somehow make complete sense.

Saved from an Alliance academy by her brother, Simon, River’s brain is. well, scrambled, for lack of a better word. Doctors and scientists did some pretty bad things to River, including removing part of her brain, and ultimately turning her into a living weapon. The last part becomes pretty handy for the Serenity crew.

While she’s a handful because she’s so unpredictable, River is a huge asset to the Firefly universe. Without her, well. the crew probably wouldn’t be around.

Buffy Summers

buffy

Not gonna lie, Buffy Summers is my favorite character in the Whedon universe. Typical and predictable, I understand, however she’s amazing and the reason that I got into Joss’ shows to begin with.

The title character of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Buffy Summers is a teenage girl just looking to fit in at her new school. She’s funny, beautiful, and happens to be a vampire slayer.

The seven seasons of Buffy follow her and the rest of the Scooby Gang as they battle vampires, rogue slayers, and a LOT of other supernatural creatures. We get to watch Buffy grow up from teenage cheerleader to a strong adult that finally comes to terms with her birthright.

Buffy is fantastic because she’s a small blonde that can come out on top no matter what the fight. And let’s face it, even if she doesn’t, chances are she’ll be resurrected anyway. How can you not love a character that’s died (a couple times) but keeps coming back?

She’s saved the world more times that I care to count, has had to kill her true love, and even sacrifices herself to save her sister (don’t get me started on the Dawn story line). Buffy will forever be my go-to Whedon character.

Alrighty! While that list isn’t by any means complete of all great Female characters from the Whedonverse, I hope the five choice that I came up with inspire some comments! Let me know who you would have picked (Fred is bound to be a top choice; she was number six on my list!!)!

Totally disagree about adding Cordelia.  The moment she switched to “Angel” she went downhill.  I will forever miss her character & relationships from “Buffy” – especially her adorable love/hate relationship with Xander!

Should’ve put Kaylee Frye from “Firefly” in her place.  Now that character was adorable, smart, flirty, shy, and fascinating to watch!

    • http://www.kellymichele.net Kelly

Omitting Kaylee was a HUGE regret on my part.  But you do have to realize that while Kaylee is smart, funny, and full of the sass, there are female characters out there that had more to offer their shows.

Kaylee is one of my personal favorites, please don’t misunderstand.  But the other choices seemed much more fair to me.

NO DAWN? COME ON! (Just kidding of course.). Good list, although i feel kinda bad for fred.

Yeah, Fred sort of got the shaft…lol.  And your comment of Dawn set me on edge before I saw you were kidding!

You’re missing Kaylee and Fred! Faith is another favorite of mine, but I can understand her not making the list, the other two, however really should, especially over Cordelia… I mean, seriously???

    • http://www.kellymichele.net Kelly

Kaylee is one of my favorites, but I feel that as a character, Kaylee didn’t really grow as a character.  Fred was an honorable mention!

Ilyria. Forever a badass and one of my favorite people/parts of any of Joss’ stuff. She is who they should’ve focused on for a spin-off show. It could’ve been connected just right while standing on it’s own feet completely.

  • xmelaniexthomasx

I never liked Cordelia.  She may have grown a lot throughout the series and grew to be less annoying but she was still Cordelia.  Though I felt she was necessary on Angel at first, I was so happy when they got rid of her.  If you wanna take a character that grew by leaps-and-bounds, you should’ve picked Anya.  She was quirky, witty and fun all while speaking her mind and being rude.  Cordy certainly couldn’t pull that off.  She just came off as a know-it-all bitch.

I think Illyria should’ve been on this list.  Granted she wasn’t on the show for very long but her role was HUGE.  She quickly became my favorite character in the Whedonverse and though I liked Fred and was sad that she died I was ok with it.  Illyria was the biggest bad ass in that and every other dimension and seriously deserved a show of her own.

I know you haven’t watched Dollhouse so I’ll forgive you for overlooking Echo.

  • Whedonite

I really disagree about a lot of this list. I think the list itself is reasonable (although I personally would substitute Zoe with Fred), but the problem is with the order of the list.

Here’s the thing about Buffy. She’s a good character, but looking at what you wrote about her as an inspiration, and a revolutionary sort of character, it seems like what you’re commenting on is about what Buffy’s character represents more than what she actually is. I think the idea of a girl who saves the word a trillion times and keeps coming back is fantastic and brilliant, but as a character, Buffy is very, very good and deserves to be on this list, but she is not the best.

Willow should be number one. She’s badass, cute, nerdy, and as much the heart and soul of the scoobies as Buffy is. But unlike Buffy, she’s genuinely complex. The season 4 exploration of Willow’s sexuality and lover for Tara, and her season 6 battle against drug addiction and herself made her an incredibly interesting, compelling, sympathetic, and inspirational character.

Cordelia should have been number two. Yes, I said it. Most people hate Cordelia because all they’ve seen of her is her three-year run as Queen Bitch on Buffy, and maybe the first season or two on Angel. But by the end of Angel, we see her character undergo such major development as she turns into a deeply moral person. Looking back from Cordy in Buffy’s “Welcome to the Hellmouth,” to Cordy in Angel’s “You’re Welcome,” I realize I’ve never seen such a huge transformation of character.

I also think Fred/Illyria is worth a mention. As a character Fred is quite a Willow/Kaylee, but she becomes genuinely interesting after the transformation to Illyria. Did you really not get shivers watching as Illyria, an age-old God who used to be omnipotent, struggles with human-all-to-human feelings of remorse, morality, and even love? That was one of the most interesting arcs Joss has ever come up with; it deserves a mention.

    • Monica242

But they made a point to say that the list was in no particular order.

    • http://www.kellymichele.net Kelly

Hi there.  I thank you for your comments, they all are really thought out and well written.  However, I did not put these characters in any particular order, they were random.  I should’ve alphabetized them! :)

  • Dianasc

They should have included Faith from Buffy instead of the two characters from Firefly.  Also, they should have included Winifred from Angel.

  • Anonymous

Sorry, without watching ‘Dollhouse,’ you can’t really judge. Take off a few days & watch — make sure you watch the pilot first not last.

    • http://www.kellymichele.net Kelly

I’ve been meaning to watch Dollhouse for a long time, I just haven’t yet.  that’s why I made sure to include the fact that I hadn’t watched Dollhouse when I made this list.  What are your favorite characters?  I’ll watch for them!

  • http://twitter.com/AmyWhedonite AmyWhedonite

WTF?!? Where in the hell is Faith? Echo? Fred? I also believe Darla deserves an honorable mention!  All women in ‘Dollhouse’ deserve mentions! And yes, I see that you have never seen ‘Dollhouse’….. Please watch it & do another list. I do believe your list is great though. Faith would have been listed before Cordy If I had to choose. This is a HARD list to do. I have tried. Joss has picked/cast some of the best actress’ this world has to offer!! I truly believe that!
I did a podcast episode with our top/favorite everything in the Whedonverse & I changed each one a dozen times. (Top 15 ep’s in the Verse, top actors/actress’, fav characters, fav/least fav villians…)

    • http://www.kellymichele.net Kelly

Hi Amy.  I am planning on watching Dollhouse and I will do another list.  I understand that there are characters that are missing, and I felt BAD about that, but it was 5 that I could choose!

  • Jimmie Rustle

I only liked Firefly from Whedon(yes I saw Dollhouse, all of it, every character on the show was superior to Echo… that’s why it flopped) so naturally my pool is limited to Firefly and River is my favorite by far.

The fact that so many non-Whedonites love Firefly and River speaks volumes to the strength of the character.

    Summer Glau is best!!
First i watched Firefly and then watched Serenity and replayed over and over and OVER those scenes where she just totally annihilated everyone in the room. SHE TOOK ON A SHIPFUL OF REAVERS AND JUST DESTROYED THEM. And TSCS… that scene where she was being smushed by a truck and John Connor takes that thingy out of her head… priceless.

  • Anonymous

    Summer Glau rules!!
Her character River Tam was one of the most interesting on the show —
the queen of unpredictability in a vessel full of unpredictable
    characters.

  • Anonymous

Its hot in here; must be Summer =]

I love summer Glau!! she is soo amazing XD
ive only seen about 2 eps of tscc but still she was amazing in the small bit i saw of her

but my favourite role she has ever played is definately river tam
because i just love the show and how summer was able to pull off a role
that was such a hit or miss character. i only saw firefly after it had
been cancelled but i watched the whole series and the movie in one
weekend in tasmania. blew my mind XD it is definaly one of my top 3 fav
shows. =] summer was incredible how she could create river and all her
relationships with the crew to such an intimate degree =D

I lovelovelove Summer Glau, she is so amazing at playing roles that are very
off, and hard to undertand at first glance, but the more I look at the
roles, the more I see amazing characterazation, and it is her body
language that sells it, her dancers grace, her ability to act/lie with
the way she moves, as opposed to acting by reciting words, it is
    fantastic, and wonderful, and beautiful

Fred is my #1 female character :) Joss pissed me off when he killed her. One of the most heart-wrenching episodes of Angel. I also like Anya

  • Carrie

I actually agree with this list. But I can’t believe no one has mentioned Lilah Morgan. Love her.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=692011670 Anonymous

I think Faith deserves to be on this list.  No one on his shows (except perhaps River) has packed as much development into a limited run, while showing both the main character and the writers the untapped potential in the show.  I’m not a Cordelia hater, or even a Fred one, but I think Faith should have been on this list instead of Cordy.

And that’s without you having seen “Dollhouse.”  I love Sierra and November, but I think Echo is actually the embodiment of Joss’s female empowerment message.

  • Anonymous

I’d add Echo, Victor and Faith to this list in place of Zoe, River and Wllow.
Faith was pure awesomeness and so was Echo after she becomes fully realized. Victor was awesome as well.

For me Dollhouse is the exception that proves the rule fo Joss’s greatness. Hated it. Even stopped watching it which I have never done with a Joss show. Why? Eliza can’t act. Simply awful as Echo and as one note Faith. Now Victor and Siera rocked. Fantastic acting. With a different star, Dollhouse might have been a good show. I much preferred Cordy on Buffy to Angel and really didn’t like the Angel-Cordy romance. I would have added Fred or Kaylee.

    So very pretty
    so very talented
I’m in love with Summer Glau!

    Firefly – One season.
Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles – Two Seasons.
The Simple Life – Five seasons.
Married with Children – Eleven seasons.
    Friends – Ten seasons.
WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH THIS WORLD?!?!

  • Anonymous

People doesn’t need puppy dogs and kittens and little bunnies and all that. Because now we have Summer Glau, the cutest superforce in the universe.

  • Anonymous

This is also why I am a fan of Summer’s; because she is one of the very few actors, and almost the only young female actor that makes me think, wow, she’s really talented, and yet doesn’t seem to have that over-inflated Hollywood ego.

  • Anonymous

If planet earth were ever invaded by aliens from another civilisation, i wouldnt use nukes or missiles to scare them, i would just send summer glau in makeup and her prettiest dress to make a heart felt appeal to the invaders and i bet u anything her beauty and charisma would melt even an evil aliens heart and stop them from invading earth.

  • http://eleusis-walks.livejournal.com/ eleusis

Thank you for  acknowledging Cordelia’s amazing character arc.  So many fans hate on her for no good reason, but I think she has the best arc in the whole ‘verse.

  • Stuartash

    What, no Fred or Kaylee?

  • Mrheavysilence

    Fail, no Illyria/Fred

    • http://www.kellymichele.net Kelly

Fred was mentioned; there just wasn’t room for her.

  • geschichte

Apparently, I’m the only person who would have put Anya on this list. Watch her again in “The Body” Amazing stuff.
