CRIMINAL MINDS: SUSPECT BEHAVIOR “Death by a Thousand Cuts” Review

Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior “Death by a Thousand Cuts”, Season 1 Episode 13 – Well here it is, ladies and gentlemen. The very last episode of Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior, appropriately titled “Death by a Thousand Cuts”. The gradual decline in ratings for this show would have made the title “Death by a Lack of Interest from Fans of the Original Criminal Minds“. I guess that wouldn’t fit on the info screen on my Tivo.

The general consensus on this show around the interwebs seems to be that it’s…well…less than good. While I admit that the quality has been very inconsistent, even with the best episodes of the series not being very impressive, it’s still sad to see a new show get cancelled before it could really find its voice and start improving. While I understand that most people disliked it because of the cast, there are a lot of people at work here that are now out of a job. The lighting guy, or the girl who got everybody their coffee, they’ve got to look for work now. I don’t know, it just bums me out seeing any show bite the dust.

As far as a review of the episode, it was actually pretty solid. I complained last week about how the identity of the unsub was kept secret for too long, and I think this episode revealing the identity of the unsub so early really went a long way to letting us know more about him. Hearing about his motivations and back story is so much more interesting than watching the Red Cell team scrub through pictures and records to uncover his identity. Plus, even if you show the identity of the unsub early, you can still surprise the audience later with a “They found out they have a partner” twist.

So in the end we got what I was hoping we wouldn’t get: A cliffhanger that we will never see resolved. Leave a comment below and let me know how you would finish the show if you were writing it, and let me know what you thought about this series overall.

Random Thoughts:

– Did any other Southern California residents recognize the mall from the first scene as the Glendale Galleria? That mall is about 20 minutes from my work, and I’ve visited the Apple store there several times. It’s a great mall. They even have a LEGO store there, you guys! A LEGO store!!!

– It was pretty weird seeing French Stewart, almost unrecognizable here as the unsub, really delve into such an incredibly morose character. For those of you who don’t know who that is, it was the weird, squinty guy from 3rd Rock from the Sun.

– Be honest with yourself. You were secretly rooting for Rawlins to just shoot Beth, weren’t you?

It took me a while to get used to the team, but once I did I started to really enjoy the show.  Too bad it’s been cancelled.
