THE CHICAGO CODE “Black Sox” Review

THE CHICAGO CODE “Black Sox” Season 1 Episode 11 – Well, talk about your cancellation jitters. With The Chicago Code on the rocks, creator Shawn Ryan and company have thrown everything they can into the story in the last two episodes, considering that the future of the show depends on these final episodes. It’s kind of sad that it’s only in the last stretch of desperation that the show has become so freaking good. It’s like the writers went most of the way with the stories and then decided to leave the rest up to the cast and talented directors. In this episode they’ve actually given the cast meat to chew on, and it makes such a difference.

The crime of the week dealt with what first appears to be gay hate crimes and soon become a crime of passion: The victim of a hate crime turns out to be the perpetrator, a man who fell in love with a male prostitute, only to realize that the love between them was one sided, the other side merely a love for money. It was a good case with social depth with twists and turns aplenty.

Vonda is sent a gold watch which belonged to her father on the anniversary of his death. When she investigates further, she finds out that her father was having an affair, and upon confronting her uncle, Wysocki reveals that Vonda’s father was having an affair for two years and was planning on leaving Vonda’s mother for her. Snap! Vonda takes the opportunity to tell her uncle that she’s sleeping with Isaac, which turns out to be a pretty good moment since he really has no legs to stand on and lecture her about ethical responsibility.

Meanwhile, Wysocki is struck by a desire to finally stop living a lie. In a brilliant conclusion to a very strong episode, he tells his ex wife he still wants her, and even though she rejects him, he tells his fiance that he is still in love with his ex and has been sleeping with her. It was two very strong scenes back to back and makes me hope that the series does get picked up.

As well as the Wysocki drama, Colvin had to do a little deception with Alderman Gibbons which does not go down well. This episode set up a lot of things for the big finale next week, and I cannot wait to see it.
