BOB’S BURGERS “Weekend at Mort’s” Review

BOB'S BURGERS Weekend at Mort's Episode 11

BOB’s BURGERS “Weekend at Mort’s” Episode 11 – My favorite animated family was back in a new episode of Bob’s Burgers. Thanks to health inspector Hugo’s declaration that the restaurant be shut down and tented for 48 hours to tackle the green mold that began growing on the restaurant walls, the Belcher family finds themselves crashing at Mort’s place for the weekend.

I enjoyed the way that Linda and Bob’s relationship was shown here. Bob is a complete workaholic and the minute that he has some free time, his idea of a good time is building a model replica of the bus from Speed. Linda, on the other hand, has her mind set on having a romantic “honeymoon” weekend with her husband. Despite Bob throwing on his hideous “lazy pants” and talking to the Keanu Reeves figurine, Linda is persistent. I really like Linda’s character and I like that she’s not the type of woman who just gets mopey about her partner’s disinterest. She dragged Bob out to the things she wanted to do and if Bob didn’t want to have a good time, she would have a good time without him.

Almost all of this episode of Bob’s Burgers was spent outside of the restaurant. It was nice to see more of Mort’s place and get a better idea of how he lives and the type of character he is. Mort’s date with Samantha (voiced by Amy Sedaris) was loaded with mortician humor and Bob’s impromptu drinking game is probably something I would have done if I was in a similar scenario for the night. For as much as he hates Jimmy Pesto, Bob has found himself in Pesto’s restaurant a lot lately. The “Pastafarian Night” theme was ridiculous but I cracked up when Pesto got up on stage to sing about the night’s menu options.

Probably my favorite part of tonight’s Bob’s Burgers was Tina, Gene and Louise running amok in Mort’s place. Louise could not control her excitement from the very beginning. As soon as Mort uttered the words inviting the family into his home, she seemed to already be concocting a scheme to scare the living daylights out of her siblings.

It turns out that Mort actually has a really nice, modern looking place and it was so perfectly child-like for the three of kids to immediately run into the room and start jumping on the couches and touching everything that looked interesting. These kids are portrayed really well so that even if the things they sometimes say and do are completely off the wall, there’s a bit of realism in all of them. When Louise had set up the pranks to play on her siblings in the mortuary, she obviously been thinking about how to scare them for a while, but she didn’t have some well orchestrated plan set up. Instead, she seemed to be making things up as she went along which made the way Tina and Gene reacted so real and so funny.

Gene has some of the best one liners on the show. His line, “I’m just gonna drink some Baileys and unwind” had me laughing and will probably be one of those phrases I use on a regular basis even though I don’t drink Baileys at all. Then again, neither does Gene. Louise had no shortage of her brilliant evil genius moments, including setting up Mort on his date with the woman from Cre-Mate.net by sending her a message without permission and later when she used Tina’s boob to convince her to explore the mortuary. I was also particularly pleased to have Tina clear up the thing she has for zombies when she explained to Louise, “I’m not a zombiphile – I have a complicated relationship with zombies. They’re dangerous, but I love their swagger.” I know exactly what you mean, Tina.

It all comes together when an inebriated Bob stumbles back into the mortuary and decides to pass out inside a soft satin lined coffin. This entire sequence of events was hilarious as his snoring scares all three of the kids and they immediately join forces to cremate Bob in the coffin because they think he’s a zombie. For almost being burned alive, Bob’s reaction was pretty subdued when he got out of the cremation oven and he didn’t seem very angry with his kids. I assume that’s thanks to a few too many Pina Coladas and the effects of having his life flash before his eyes.

Lots of laughs in this episode of Bob’s Burgers and I really enjoyed all the characters tonight. I didn’t really need Bob’s final speech or the singing voices that kept singing “the bus from speed” but pretty much everything else worked for me and I’m very much looking forward to the next couple episodes.
